Our skillful, dexterous and dynamic hands and wrists are multifaceted: they manipulate tools, write, type, play musical instruments, give massages, or use sign language, just to name a few. However, during asana [poses] practice, we require our hands to bear weight, placing significant demand on our fingers & wrists, expecting them to function like feet by holding all or most of our body weight. But our hands are not feet - and we were not divinely created to regularly place such demands on our upper extremities.

When we use our hands to bear our body weight as if they were feet, the wrists are in the extreme position of extension, as in the gesture when you extend your hand forward to say “stop.” This puts extreme pressure on the many small bones and the soft tissue around them. Without adequate preparation for flexibility and strength in the mechanics of the arms as a whole, chronic or acute injury may result.

Make sure the muscles of your hands and fingers/finger pads are the areas of emphasis.

When we press the fingers down—all the way to the tips—we transfer weight forward onto the hands and reduce the amount of weight on the wrists.

Think of your hands as similar to your feet. Our feet have arches that distribute pressure and absorb shock; your hands can do the same. When bearing weight on them, feel the perimeter of the palm and the heel of the wrist connecting to the ground, maintaining a small air space under the center of the palm. Maintaining this small “arch” in your hand activates the muscles of the wrists and hands, providing structural support. The fingers should also spread wide with even pressure into each to distribute and balance the forces placed on the hand.

If wrist pain is an issue, there are plenty of modifications. Using foam wedges or blocks can help shift weight, and poses can often be done on fists or forearms instead of open palms.

Here are a few "exercises" for you to apply to your pre-practice:

  • Wrist Rotations – Gently rotate your wrists in both directions to improve mobility.
  • Thumb Opposition – Touch your thumb to each fingertip one at a time, making an "O" shape. This enhances mobility and coordination.
  • Finger Lifts – Place your hand flat on a table and slowly lift each finger one at a time, then lower it back down. Helps improve dexterity and strength.

Your hands are vital for your day-to-day functioning — always present, always working, and always ready to help you tackle life. Give them the care they deserve, and they’ll keep high-fiving, creating, serving you and others and carrying you through every adventure for years to come! If you need additional tips, help or strategies, feel free to contact me anytime.

Yoga at OHM Newsletter Vicyasa™ 4/27 - 5/3/2026: 'tis the season of... blossoming

“We don’t ask a flower any special reason for its existence. We just look at it and are able to accept it as being something different for ourselves.” — Gendolyn Brooks

Development and growth --  blossoming -- in Yoga terms is a holistic transformation, moving beyond a checklist of physical poses [asanas] to fostering increased mental awareness, emotional resilience, and spiritual connection.

It manifests as consistency & stability on and off the mat, profound breathing, daily self-acceptance, and bringing the peace found on the mat into everyday happenings. It is characterized by awareness, not perfection.

Key Dimensions of Growth in Yoga
  • Mental & Emotional Growth: Increased awareness of thoughts, reduced judgment, and developing "stronger attitudinal muscles" to manage life's stresses.
  • Physical Advancement: While not solely about difficult poses, growth includes increased flexibility, strength, balance, and enhanced body alignment.
  • Improved Self-Awareness: Developing a, "...friendship with myself," and increased compassion for one’s own body and limitations.
  • Consistency over Intensity: Finding growth through steady, regular practice rather than just attempting complex, advanced movements.
Also, become aware of what is happening in your mind at any given point in time. Are you paying attention to every thought that pops up or are you selective in paying attention to the thoughts that come up? The more attention you give to your thoughts, the more they tend to become concepts in your mind, and the more one gets entangled in them.

Developing these qualities takes time, and you have to be active in your practice & adopt the teachings onto our day-to-day. Patanjali calls it “Abhyasa” (practice)—repeatedly returning to the practice of staying deeply rooted in the permanence of your being yet blossoming on the outside and inside.

Yoga at OHM Newsletter Vicyasa™ 4/20 - 4/26/2026: Earth Day!

4/17/2026

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” — Rachel Carson
Victor Cotto Yoga NYC; New York Yoga Upper East Side Hot; Sui Yoga & Spa NYC Best Studio; The Hampton's Hot Yoga Teacher & private teacher Meditation; NYC Best Vinyasa Yoga Teachers Private Yoga Actors Models Singers
Earth Day is not considered a national holiday, but it is a special day that asks us to give pause to our daily rituals and recognize all the ways that we can make a difference for our planet.  The belief is that if we all do our individual part to care for our beautiful planet Earth, together we can make a difference. In the spirit, union... to yolk, to come together -- Yoga.

Issues that are often addressed on Earth Day include:

  • Air & water pollution
  • Recycling our garbage
  • Composting
  • Climate change
  • Erosion
  • eCaring for our ecosystems, rain forests'
  • Efficient cars
  • Lowering our carbon footprint
  • Leaning on renewable power and renewable fuels

Earth Day is the ideal time to practice ahimsa [non violence] on and off the mat.  If you're looking for creative ways to express your gratitude for our planet earth on the mat, here are some creative ideas:
  • Practice grounding asanas - Our hips and legs are tied to the earth element and the root chakra. Grounding yoga postures can help keep our root chakra in balance while helping us stay grounded and connected to the earth.  Some postures that can help you feel grounded are Baddha Konasana (bound angle pose), Balasana (child's pose) and Tadasana (mountain pose).
  • Hold your yoga postures longer - Holding your yoga postures a bit longer than you normally would can help to increase our awareness and deepen our mindfulness while pulling in earth energy
  • Practice grounding pranayama - Practice a grounding pranayama like Diaphragmatic Breath (deep belly breathing).  Imagine you're a tree with deeply rooted feet. As you inhale, envision your breath flowing down into your roots.
  • Dedicate your practice - One of the most powerful things we can do when practicing yoga is to dedicate our practice.  Dedicating our practice gives it meaning and adds purpose to every breath and every movement.  Dedicating your practice to ahimsa can inspire you to gather all the loving earth energy you create on the mat and take it with you off the mat and into the world.

There are many ways you can celebrate Earth Day.  Some of the most common ways that people work to keep the earth healthy include:
  • Participate in Seva by volunteering to clean up your community parks and streets
  • Support your local recycling programs
  • Shop green businesses
  • Stick with re-usable products over disposable products
  • Repurpose those items which you no longer need
  • Shop thrift stores
  • Purchase and/or use energy-efficient appliances
  • Line dry your clothes after washing
  • Walk or ride your bike as much as possible
  • Carpool when possible
  • Minimize your car trips when and how you can

Yoga at OHM Newsletter Vicyasa™ 4/13 - 4/19/2026: Spring Cleaning

“As we embrace our passions and delve into the mystery of life, we unite with the majestic complexity of nature; and if we follow the signs, this can help us understand who we really are.”

Stepping into the realm of the Spring season... it's a time that breathes life into every corner of our life. This chapter of 2026 is marked by new beginnings, vibrant blossoming and the promise of growth.

Through our yoga practice, we can immerse ourselves in the energy of Spring, aligning our intentions and sequences with the spirit of renewal that vibrates through the air.

Spring is nature’s invitation to cleanse and rejuvenate, and our yoga practice can become a channel for this time. Lets integrate practices that stimulate the lymphatic system, invigorate circulation, and encourage gentle twists, we can support the body’s natural ‘detoxification’ processes.

Here are some vital Spring time shapes:
  • Twisting Chair Pose (Utkatasana Twist): Boosts circulation and massages digestive organs to detoxify.
  • High Lunge with Backbend: Opens the chest and shoulders, promoting deep breathing and emotional release.
  • Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana): Strengthens the back and rejuvenates the spine to build energy.
  • Wild Thing Pose (Camatkarasana): An invigorating, fun pose that opens the heart and throat.
  • Gate Pose (Parighasana): Stretches the side body to create space in the lungs.
  • Tree Pose (Vrksasana): Balances and grounds, representing growth and roots.
  • Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana):  Lenghtens back muscles and promotes "letting go" of the old season.

In the philosophy of yoga, the metaphor of blooming flowers and sprouting seeds echoes the journey of self-discovery and growth. With each breath, each posture, and each intention, we channel the energy of renewal that defines this season... lets dive into these practices that cleanse the body, open the heart, celebrate growth, and foster adaptability.

Yoga at OHM Newsletter Vicyasa™ 4/6 - 4/12/2026: You better... replenish!

"Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy; sweat will get you change." -- Jesse Jackson

Sweating is essential for the human body to regulate itself. And during this transition to a warmer season, you'll be sweating more during yoga and throughout the day. But when is the best time to drink water so it complements your yoga?

Your best strategy to prepare for a yoga class on hotter days is to drink plenty of fluids the day before a class and if on the same day, you should intake hydrating fluids 3-4 hours before. Make it water, nutrient-rich clear drinks or juice blends even sports drinks. Add to your day plenty of fruits and vegetables. And most of all, with any class, make sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate after.

If possible, avoid drinking water immediately before or during class. In addition to making our physical bodies feel inflated, consuming large amounts of water before or during a practice also interferes with our energy bodies; one theory says that sipping during yoga practice is akin to pouring water over our inner fire as we try to build it.

In Yoga and Ayurveda, it is thought that a sip of water during practice disrupts the body’s energy and concentration. Hydration before will make you perform better, increasing strength and flexibility. A lack of water can damage the cardiovascular system & your body will have difficulties regulating itself. This makes yoga a strain and limits your performance. Hydration ensures that your immune system functions properly so that you do not get sick or feel stomach pains by flushing out toxins. Muscle weakness, muscle cramping, fatigue, irritability, and headaches are just some of the symptoms of electrolyte imbalance.

Ultimately, a yoga practice can be used to reduce compulsions and become more comfortable with discomforts. When we lean into resisting the urge to drink water, or go to the bathroom, we become better at dealing with the discomforts of life such as hunger, thirst, or the weather.

After yoga, feel free to drink your favorite tea, water, or electrolyte-enhanced water to replenish the body and get ready for your next practice.
