"Your mind has the faculty to analyze everything in the shortest possible time—so short it can’t even be measured. This faculty is called intuition." - Yogi Bhajan Winter Solstice is right around the corner, and with that auspicious time, it brings the end of this year's solar cycle, and an opportunity for a sacred halt in our own lives to embrace stillness and inner reflection.
Solstice – in Latin translates to “the standing still of the sun - the time to honor all that you have planted and cultivated in this past year. Culminating in integrating your lessons, and looking to where space can be created for what you’ll be calling in for the year ahead. With that, a focus on meditation & pranayama [how we control our breathing] can be at the forefront of our practice. Much like our yoga postures, pranayama for the Winter is all about bringing in warmth and brightness, while also practicing techniques that bring the nervous system into a state of ‘rest and digest’. Practice a few rounds of Kappalabhati [breath of fire] in the morning to awaken the senses and release any nasal or sinus congestion, then set a timer for 5-10 minutes of inhaling for 4, holding for 7 and exhaling for 8, which can help cultivate a sense of calm and ease. Pranayama provides a framework for learning the subtle pulsations of prana in the body and the deep stillness between. Seasonal living can help us maintain vibrancy and health throughout the entire year, and as you’ll discover, tuning into the seasons is one of the most intuitive and natural practices we can adopt to be productive. “Whether we’re eating or working or meditating or listening or talking, the reason that we’re here in this world at all is to study ourselves. In fact, it has been said that studying ourselves provides all the books we need.” ― Pema Chödrön Svadhyaya translates to “self study,” and it’s the fourth niyama listed in the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
To fully understand the application of this practice of awareness and self examination into your daily life, it’s important to recognize that svadhyaya meant studying the ancient philosophical yoga texts -- reading the texts, reciting them, committing them to memory — embodying those philosophies. So how can you incorporate the practice of svadhyaya while practicing asana [poses]? Listening to your yoga teacher during class is part of the practice, but what happens when a teacher instructs you to move into a pose that feels really uncomfortable or asks you to stay in an asana longer than you can stand? Chances are your internal dialogue kicks into high gear: begging, sometimes demanding, that you provide your body with some relief. If that’s the case for you, then that inner dialogue is what you should be paying attention to if you want to practice svadhyaya. Svadhyaya on the yoga mat means studying the “what”, “how” and “why” to your thoughts and feelings while flowing from pose to pose and then comparing that to your daily life. Consider asking yourself some of these questions:
There's loads of questions and answers you can constantly explore in your practice; notice if it really is an exploration or a judgemental take. Not only can doing this form of self observation improve your asana practice during a yoga class, but gaining this self knowledge can change the way your mind deals with self judgment and expand your capacity for introspection both on and off the mat. Losing steam? Has the time change and earlier sunsets affected your mood? Seasonal affective disorder is a condition that is precipitated by the change of season, particularly at the equinoxes. It is marked by a depressed mood, low energy, pessimism, and can effect people’s ability to work, and maintain relationships. It most often starts in the fall and wanes in the spring but it can also go the other way. The biochemical & psychological toll on the body can be combated with a steady yoga practice. A steady Yoga regimen, focused breathing practice and a regular schedule to keep you on track is the best way to release tension, stay invigorated and increase your serotonin levels so you can triumph during the coldest days of the year. Poses like backbends can help awaken, legs up the wall regulates circulation and twists nourish the spine and internal organs. Along with cardiovascular stimulation, the above poses will keep you balanced and focused to slay the cold months ahead. If your ability to work, eat, move, sleep, take care of vulnerable beings in your charge (including yourself) and/or control impulses that may be self-harming is compromised by negative thoughts and low energy, please talk to a professional. When I let go of who I am, I receive what I need.” - Lao Tzu Autumn, a period of transition, is a time for self-nourishment and reflection. The season of autumn invites us to explore an inward and introspective energy both on and off our yoga mats. This is a time of year where we slow down, contemplate, and experience gratitude, abundance, and... LET GO. Detachment of the Spring and Summer and a welcoming of change. Clinging to moments, past or present, will not bring us peace. This is the lesson of Aparigraha [one of the 5 Yamas]. If we are to awaken to the fullness of our being, we must learn to let go. Aparigraha has many translations, but in its purest form, it means detachment and renunciation. We don’t have to take the holiest of paths to learn that the things we call ‘possessions’ can sometimes create a frenzy within us. We need only look around us. We are a ‘storage’ society of boxes, closets, and cupboards, and homes—stuffed full of things we do not use, but still will not part with. It’s not that we shouldn’t enjoy material objects, but somewhere along the way we became hoarders of them. “These things here—they are mine,” we say, and put them all in a box under the bed. The ego constructs our identity and can hold us hostage to our belongings. It’s not just moments, or material objects, that we accumulate, and then cling to furiously. We also build up and hold onto resentments. We acquire and defend opinions and beliefs. We are so conditioned to think in terms of ‘me’ and ‘my’ that we may even believe that other people belong to us. Our partners? They’re “mine,” too. Similarly during our practice, we have an opportunity to observe where we are clinging with our bodies. Are we afraid to open up in backbends? Are we gripping our toes to the mat in our warrior sequence like a bird afraid to fly? Perhaps we are clenching our buttocks during cobra. In all of these moments, we can realize that in order to have a deeper experience, we must be prepared to let go. And so we can come to the end of our practice, ready to sit in our meditation with our open hands, our vessel empty, ready to be filled up. LEANNE MCDERMOTT ADDED TO ON-DEMAND...
