SHOULD I PRACTICE OR SHOULD I PAUSE?

It’s no secret that we live in a world in which more is considered better. The #nodaysoff hashtag may have popped up on your Instagram feed, potentially causing you to fall into the “rest is for the weary” lie of a mindset. We’ve been conditioned to believe that pushing through is always preferred, but when we take a step back and reflect on what is right for us in our bodies, the truth is that this might not be the case.  

Ask yourself: should I practice or should I pause? This can be asked before you roll out your mat or in the middle of a yoga class. Should I practice this pose, this sun salutation, this sequence…or should I pause?

Yoga is not about going through the motions without assessing what you need. Instead, perhaps the real yoga begins when we step away from the mat for a day or two. Pausing may give your physical body and your intellectual mind a chance to rinse off so when you return to your mat, it is with a fresh and rejuvenated perspective. Sometimes a day away is all you need to come back with an even more strongly reignited fire for your love of the practice.

Signs it may be time to pause:
  • You’re physically injured
  • You’ve become bored with your practice
  • You find yourself going through the motions instead of being fully present
  • You feel that rolling out your mat is more of an obligation than a desire

The wisest yogi is the one who knows when to practice and when to pause.

It's Yoga Practice, Not Yoga Perfect
The importance of treating yoga as an ongoing journey vs. an achievement

Have you ever stopped to think about the words we use to describe yoga? Unlike a traditional workout in which you might discuss a “routine” or a “program,” yoga uses the term “practice” to describe the poses, the breathwork, and the actions yogis go through every time they step on their mat. The practice also refers to the work done off the mat, or the real yoga as some like to call it.

Thinking about the yoga practice as just that – a practice– can be freeing. Instead of something that needs to be “gotten,” achieved, or perfected, the essence of yoga is in the practice itself.

Despite the fact that many of us strive for it, we all know that perfection isn’t realistic or even possible. The beauty of having a yoga practice is that perfection is never the goal. With that, you can release a sigh of relief! Eliminating the perfection aspect from yoga means that there’s no pressure to “nail it” or "get it just right.”

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the truth about yoga is that you’re never going to "get" it. This is because yoga isn't something that can ever be fully figured out. The practice of yoga is in accepting that it is an ongoing journey, with twists, turns, exceptions, and pearls of wisdom peppered in along the way.

Yoga doesn't want you to have it all figured out. It wants you to trust that it has what you need at any given time. Yoga is fluid, just like we are as human beings. We are ever-changing and malleable. We will never 100% figure ourselves out. The moment we think we do, life throws us a curveball to test us. Some call it a “gotcha” moment while others simply see it as the Universe humbling us. Yoga is like that, too. The practice is an opportunity for constant learning and growth. There's never an end to the practice of yoga, and that is what makes it so accessible to everyone. The infiniteness of yoga is freedom.

The ancient practice of Yoga was never meant to be the answer to all of life’s challenges. Rather, it is a philosophy and a system of practice for living. Asanas [poses] do not eliminate challenges and problems we encounter day-to-day, but rather teaches the practitioner how to maintain equanimity and live peacefully through life’s inevitable challenges.

Being in a pose, flowing through a practice and the challenging components of the exercises of Yoga teaches strength, perseverance, and contentment within difficult times, and to release attachment from goals or outcomes. It is an element of practice for the yogi to face these challenges rather than to avoid them.

Yogis pray to Ganesh for positive outcomes and good fortune. But what many don’t know is that there is much more to the deity. The iconography of the Ganesh silhouette is rich with heart teachings and really amazing and grounding life lessons and warnings.  Ganesh’s trunk features twists and turns. That symbolizes the twists and turns of life, and the twists and turns of the heart’s journey of awakening. It tells us that the spiritual path is not a straight line. It’s not predictable. When it twists, you can’t see around the corner. You can’t see the unknown. This can produce anxiety. Facing the unknown can be frightening for the part of us that needs to know, the part that needs certainty.

To awaken to a broader reality that includes uncertainty and the unknown requires regular practice. Why? Because we have to constantly work with our fear of the unknown. And fear is just the beginning. There’s more that lurks around the corner – self-doubt, unworthiness, need for approval and validation, all patterns of limitation and smallness, to name just a few. To stay on the path of the heart against the greatest odds takes perseverance. It’s a life-time practice….at least.

Ultimately, finding your true self on the mat and meeting yourself at your best and worst daily will build perseverance. The journey is never an easy one, filled with challenges as we discover ourselves. Challenges shouldn’t be viewed as negatives, but rather as integral stepping stones on the path of yoga.

WHAT IS #YOGAEVERYDAMNDAY ANYWAY?
WHY THE POPULAR HASHTAG IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN ASANA  


Hang out on Instagram long enough and you’re likely to come across #yogaeverydamnday. This hashtag may be popular, but what does it even mean? Do you have to do yoga every day, and is that even safe? Beyond that, does the concept of doing yoga every single day mean that there’s now pressure or competition associated with yoga? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? These are all questions to consider, so let’s!

First things first, is practicing asana (the physical postures of yoga) safe to do every day? Generally yes, but the most important thing to do is what’s right for your body. If you are practicing strenuous asana every single day to the point where your muscles, joints, and bones feel fatigued, it’s probably a good idea to back off and alternate with a restorative practice like yin yoga.

Aside from that, are there other ways to practice yoga beyond taking a class or participating in asana? Absolutely! Asana is only one of the 8 limbs of yoga.

The 8 Limbs of Yoga
  1. Yamas - self-restraints or discipline
  2. Niyamas -  observances
  3. Asana - physical movement and postures
  4. Pranayama  - breath control
  5. Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses
  6. Dharana - focused concentration
  7. Dhyana - meditation
  8. Samadhi - total bliss or enlightenment

Taking time to live at least one of these limbs each day is still practicing yoga, perhaps sometimes even more intelligently than if you come to your mat. The guiding principle should be your intention – why are you doing #yogaeverydamnday?

The definition of yoga, which is “to yolk” or “to unite.” Putting yourself in any setting that fosters a sense of unity is practicing yoga. For some, that means rolling out their mat in a studio. For others, it’s about getting together with a dear friend over a cup of coffee. Others still find breathwork or a 5-minute morning meditation to be their #yogaeverydamnday. One is not more “yoga” than the other. The practice is ever changing, but never absolute. Whether on or off the mat, yoga is here for you every damn day.

Some of us are more lengthier. Some of us are blessed with strong arms. Some of us have a history of dance or athletics with an innate sense of balance. But no two of us have the same genetic composition. Nor do we have the same history; life experiences, injury background, childbirth, or conditioning, all which contribute to the individuality of our body and mind.

And yet it is so easy to compare ourselves!

When we compare our own practice to that of others we lose the personal connection to our body that is so integral to the practice of yoga. To get the most out of our practice, we need to be in touch with how our body is responding to each pose. This is called the mind-body connection.

Only you can know your own body. You can listen to yourself in a way that no one else can -- not even your yoga teacher! You can enter a posture and notice if it creates undue tension in certain parts of your body. Then, you can adjust yourself to accomodate your needs.

When we begin to listen to our bodies we realize that our needs are simply that: needs. They are no better or worse than anyone else’s. To create the most joy on and off our mats, we must embrace our individuality and look after the person we know best: ourselves.

Brahmacharya is the fourth Yama and as explained by Patanjali’s yoga Sutras, this yogic principle of detaching from the small things in life to connect with the infinite yields enormous strength and energy. The literal translation of brahmacharya is “moving into infinity”; “Brahma” means infinity, the Absolute, or big; “charya” means to move or to walk, to live.

Many times, it is taught as "celibacy" or moderation, but I like to think of it in a wider sense to keep the mind always engaged in thoughts of Brahma or the supreme consciousness.

Dedicated practice of asana, pranayama, and meditation creates a strong foundation for brahmacharya to grow. These practices increase awareness and relax the nervous system, reducing the susceptibility to excitability and arousal and enabling us to better control our responses. These also help to separate your emotions from your thoughts, releasing the control your emotions have over the autonomic nervous system, endocrine glands, and hormonal activities. In this state, our sensual impulses have far less control over us. Meditation also connects us to our true nature of boundless joy and bliss. Remaining in periods of silence on a regular basis can help purify our minds and spirits of any negative impressions.

Culture your senses by refraining from meaningless extravagances that deplete your energy and distract your mind - it may excess drinking alcohol or overeating. When you decrease the amount of energy you spend on sensory indulgences and instead turn the mind inward (pratyahara), you replace your dependencies and transient cravings with the experience of inner joy and peace.

For yogis seeking the highest potential of yoga, Brahmacharya gives us a chance to unleash our creative energy, to remain soaked in the divine presence, to move into infinity or supreme consciousness (brahman), and thus find a way to fulfill the greatest and finest desire of all—the desire to connect with the unchanging reality.

Autumn, a period of transition, is a time for self-nourishment and reflection. The season of autumn invites us to explore an inward and introspective energy both on and off our yoga mats. This is a time of year where we slow down, contemplate, and experience gratitude, abundance, and... LET GO. Detachment of the Spring and Summer and a welcoming of change.

Clinging to moments, past or present, will not bring us peace. This is the lesson of Aparigraha [one of the 5 Yamas]. If we are to awaken to the fullness of our being, we must learn to let go.

Aparigraha has many translations, but in its purest form, it means detachment and renunciation.

We don’t have to take the holiest of paths to learn that the things we call ‘possessions’ can sometimes create a frenzy within us. We need only look around us. We are a ‘storage’ society of boxes, closets, and cupboards, and homes—stuffed full of things we do not use, but still will not part with. It’s not that we shouldn’t enjoy material objects, but somewhere along the way we became hoarders of them. “These things here—they are mine,” we say, and put them all in a box under the bed. The ego constructs our identity and can hold us hostage to our belongings.

It’s not just moments, or material objects, that we accumulate, and then cling to furiously. We also build up and hold onto resentments. We acquire and defend opinions and beliefs. We are so conditioned to think in terms of ‘me’ and ‘my’ that we may even believe that other people belong to us. Our partners? They’re “mine,” too.

Similarly during our practice, we have an opportunity to observe where we are clinging with our bodies. Are we afraid to open up in backbends?  Are we gripping our toes to the mat in our warrior sequence like a bird afraid to fly? Perhaps we are clenching our buttocks during cobra.

In all of these moments, we can realize that in order to have a deeper experience, we must be prepared to let go. And so we can come to the end of our practice, ready to sit in our meditation with our open hands, our vessel empty, ready to be filled up.

The Yamas [a series of "right living" or ethical rules within Yoga philosophy - "reining in" or "control" - restraints for proper conduct that can be understood as ways in which we interact with the world around us.] Essentially, things we must observe to be good, solid people. There's no surprise that telling the truth makes the list & it is called SATYA; the second of the Yamas.

It literally translates to honesty and is about being truthful to the world and to yourself, but without forgetting our other goals of being kind and compassionate that we looked at in Ahimsa [non injury/harm]. Sometimes being truthful is not about what you say, but how you say it & how we live it. In order to check if what we want to express is following Satya, we can ask ourselves these four questions: Is it true? Is it REALLY true? Is it necessary? Is it kind/can you say it in a kind way?

In our yoga practice, we must be honest with our students when we are teaching and we must be honest to ourselves as practitioners. We can't let our ego take over and tell us we can do a pose when we can't or shouldn't. In the same way, we can't let fear tell us we can't do something if truthfully we can. These are all things to consider when practicing - decide what is the version of the practice that is truthfully right for you.

The benefits of SATYA? Healthier relationships with others and yourself. A clear conscience. Trust in yourself. Inspires others.
