IS YOGA ENOUGH…? “He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.” - Lao Tzu (This week's newsletter was authored by teacher extraordinaire and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Finding yoga often feels like a whole world has opened up. There’s a connection to body, mind, and breath that’s unlike any other form of movement. Spend a little more time on your mat and you’ll likely see just how physical the asana practice can be. That leads many people to question whether yoga is enough exercise or if they need other “workouts.” As with so many questions, it depends.
First things first, yoga isn’t just a “workout” in the physical sense. It’s active, that’s for sure, but the workout you get isn’t just going to be for your body; it’s also going to be for your mind. With that said, if the physical benefits are something you’re after, you’re in good company. Many people seek out yoga for this very purpose. Yoga offers a lot of physical benefits; certain types like Ashtanga and Vinyasa are very bodyweight focused and can help you get stronger. After all, think about it: chaturanga is essentially a low push-up. Hopping forward in a Sun Salutation mimics a reverse burpee. Then there are all the arm balances, which require a ton of upper body strength, and the inversions, which, when done correctly, can set your core on fire. And we didn’t even talk about navasana (boat pose)! There are so many athletic components of the asana practice. What “depends” when answering the aforementioned question is the type of yoga you practice. A vigorous vinyasa flow can be great for getting your heart rate up and giving you your daily dose of cardio. In that case, yes yoga may be “enough.” On the other hand, taking a gentle Hatha class with very little balancing and mostly seated postures may not give you the athleticism you’re after. These two examples are both extreme and most yoga exists in between the two of them. Many classes have parts that are a little challenging as well as parts that are very relaxing. The stretching and lengthening you get from these classes are valuable in their own right. The key is to find the class that aligns with your goals. If you’re looking to get into an arm balance or master a challenging pose, yoga may not be enough. By that, we don’t mean strenuous enough. Rather, you may need to supplement your practice with other strength training to get you there. If building muscle and increasing strength is your goal, taking open level or level 1 classes might not cut it. If the goal is to move and breathe, then you probably don’t “need” more. Remember, what’s enough for one person isn’t the same as what’s enough for another. That even exists within a single class or a style of yoga. One chaturanga may be enough for one student; another may require 5 to get the same feeling. What’s most important is to not judge it and to remember that YOU are enough. Yoga just supports the journey you’re already on. ON-DEMAND ACCESS ONLY -- SALE Now you can subscribe to on-demand only and get access to our ever-changing archive of pre-recorded sessions. "Gratitude has a way of bringing us into the present moment, allowing us to be with what is. Our mind is no longer chasing after something in the future or lingering somewhere in the past. We are content." — Birgitte Kristen Many of my teachers speak about cultivating the qualities that nurture us. There are infinite qualities that exist within us—such as courageousness, empathy, creativity, anger, hurt, pain, excitement, jealousy, hope, peace, understanding—and each one may arise throughout the day.
Which qualities can you cultivate to find peace in our lives this holiday season; the qualities that allow us to be present and fully engaged in the moment. Cultivating, focusing on, to read about, to listen to, to observe, to foster those qualities of appreciation, gratitude, understanding, and compassion within us, allows our mind to be at peace. I am grateful to be teaching. I am grateful for all that Yoga has taught me, and is teaching me moment to moment. As a teacher, I'm always yearning for wisdom in order to articulate and be clear in conveying this tangible, yet not so tangible thing called yoga. As a person, we are always striving to be happy, to be content with who we are as a person. I am grateful for who I have become as a person. I have work to do—I am still working on relationships with others—but, so far, I like me. Many blessings to the yoga community. May we all grow together. Kennedy I want to confess something... something that has been weighing heavily on my mind and heart. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that for awhile, I have been feeling down; with health, emotions, thoughts, the space I've created etc. along with all that is being revealed in the news, volatility with world leaders, mass shootings, war – I sometimes find it hard to remain positive and not let all the sadness get to me.
Meditation and reflecting has helped to remind myself that worry doesn’t get me anywhere. It only diminishes the value of the good things I have in my life; a roof over my head, being able to teach etc. With Thanksgiving unfolding quickly, I think we can all benefit, myself included, with making gratitude yoga a regular practice. When we open ourselves up to be grateful for what we already have, we open ourselves up to all life has to offer. Gratitude yoga is mostly about your state of mind. It involves making a conscious effort to incorporate thankfulness into your yoga routine. This can be done in a variety of ways: through setting an intention at the beginning of the day, before you begin your practice, or as part of your movement practice, being loving and aware of how the asanas can be healing and soulful and not just rigorous and challenging. It can be easy to forget that we have a lot of things to be grateful for when life turns bleak and grey, but that just means we have even more of a reason to include gratitude in our yoga practice, on and off the mat. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) I’m too busy to practice yoga...but I miss my practice! Oh, the common conundrum. Whether you consider yoga an occasional hobby or it’s a non-negotiable ritual you engage in every day, there may come a time when it’s hard to get on your mat. Life is riddled with obligations: family, friends, work… these things add up. It’s good to have a full life. In fact, it’s encouraged, but a jam-packed calendar may not leave time for much else. If life is getting in the way of your yoga practice, the first thing to know is that that’s totally normal. Just like any element of life, how frequently you come to your mat and the level of dedication you can commit to your asana practice may ebb and flow. That’s par for the course for any yogi. The challenge for you is to ride the wave. Still, knowing that others face the same issue doesn’t solve it. If you’re missing your mat, there’s a simple solution: Commit to less. Prioritize consistency over quantity. You may only be able to do 10 minutes a day but if you do that daily, you’ll still feel connected to your practice. Do more when you can/ if you want to, but avoid making it an obligation, as that will take the joy out of it. Avoid falling into the “all or nothing” mindset. Instead, remember that a little can be enough. Commit to less to show up for yourself more regularly. That is the practice of yoga. It is associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and marks the beginning of the fiscal year in India. The multi-day festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness by recalling the many battles won by virtuous warriors over evil demons. On a social level, it represents a time of families congregating to share sweets and sweetness, couples honoring their partnerships and siblings acknowledging their love. Diwali is a time for gratitude & adding a reflective meditation of appreciation for your health is a ritual you can partake in. Reflect on the things you are thankful for, and let this positive energy flow through your practice. Celebrate Diwali with your loved ones by practicing with your partner, or roll around the mat with your children. This not only strengthens your bonds but also adds an element of fun to your celebrations. As Diwali features lighting lamps and candles, consider practicing in a candlelit setting. The soft, flickering light can create a serene atmosphere for your practice. Diwali and Yoga are both influential sources of light and positivity. Combining the two can help you find balance, harmony, and inner peace during the festive season. Embrace the qualities of the festival into your asana practice to enrich your experience and deepen your connection with the Diwali's true essence. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Way back when, people used to come together and form communities based on churches, synagogues, temples, or other forms of religion. That still exists, but the more secular world in which we live has more or less phased that congruence out of mainstream society. It's harder to find your community these days. One of the very special aspects of yoga is the community it can create.
Finding like-minded people who think the way you do and share similar values can be challenging; yoga makes it a little easier. The physical practice may be what brings many of us to the mat, but time and time again, you'll see the same faces show up to in-studio classes for more than just the asana. Perhaps it's because they know their favorite teacher will be instructing or maybe the time just works well for their schedule. These patterns of people begin to foster a sense of community that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Sweating, breathing, moving, laughing, falling, trying, and falling again breeds community. Sharing knowing smiles when the teacher calls out "double chaturanga!" builds connections. Letting out a collective lion's breath after practicing "Ujjayi" pranayama for 55 minutes is both satisfying and unifying, especially when everyone does it together. There is true power in community. In fact, some might say that the yoga community itself is a higher power. Yoga may just be the vehicle we need to access it. I'd like to add that "Perfectionism" is also the thief of joy. Neither comparing nor the word perfect have any place in any meditation or yoga practice.
Too often, students feel self-imposed or outwardly pressured to advance in their poses; social media & studio culture, our upbringing, all influence and can sabotage our healthy yoga lifestyle. These pressures can lead to burnout, injury, and competitiveness—which is not the part of the construct of yoga. Nor is that a feature of any ancient scriptures or texts. That mode of practice creates suffering and can stunt our imagination and excitement for the practice as yoga practitioners. Of course, progressing in the practice of asana is beautiful too - but only healthy when that progress includes peace, mindfulness, awareness and inner knowing. This practice is one of joy. It’s meant to teach us to live up to our full potential. Not to be "perfect" or compare yourself to someone else, or to unhealthy standards not fitting your present. It’s a journey that we choose to embark on. Life is already a wild ride... so arrive on your mat this Fall and allow your breath, your practice, and the deep roots of yoga support you to feel more grounded and connected to the beauty that is you. PAYMENT: VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- Victor@YogawithVictor.com NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ “The best place to be is exactly where you are.” – Anonymous (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) When it comes to matters of mat placement, there’s a general consensus among most yogis: we all have a favorite spot. Whether it’s the front and center or the coveted back corner, our go-to spots are precious. Ask a fellow yogi why a spot is their favorite and some might have an answer. I don’t want anyone looking at me; I need to see what other people are doing; I prefer to be by the window. Others might say I don’t really know; I just like it here. While a variety of factors are at play, where you put your mat may say something about your mentality. YogaJournal recently published an article looking to unpack the reasoning behind mat placement in the yoga room. What they found was that where you put your mat may say more about you than you realized.
THE FRONT Yogis who march to the front of the room typically feel uninhibited by others in the space. They tend to be confident in their practice and trust that they can rely on the teacher’s verbal cuing as well as their own experience. Another reason some yogis opt for the front row is to eliminate comparison. Sure, fellow yogis are beside you but the constant reminder of what others’ asana looks like is quite literally out of sight…and therefore, perhaps out of mind. Many find that being in the front reduces distractions and enhances their ability to dive inward. THE BACK Newcomers, observers, or those with a bit less confidence in their physical practice tend to gravitate towards the back of the room. This makes sense, especially if coming to yoga feels outside the norm to begin with. On the flip side, there may be a certain sense of confidence to setting up in the back. The back row bunch don’t need others to see how they’re flowing; they are secure in the poses they choose to practice. Additionally, being in the back may encourage some yogis to try out new poses they would otherwise avoid. The perception of fewer eyes on them may help practitioners experiment in unexpected ways. THE MIDDLE Middle-of-the-room yogis make up the majority of the class. Left to take in all the sights, sounds, and sweat of their surroundings, these practitioners are immersed in it all. The energy in the middle of the room tends to be that of the middle of a dance floor. Neither a follower nor a leader in this sense, middle-room yogis embrace the pack. These yogis tend to trust their practices, especially if they’re doing inversions or arm balances in the center of the room. Still, they tend to appreciate the inspiration that is all around them and may use it to challenge themselves. THE OUTLIERS Of course, there will always be those yoga rebels who throw caution to the wind and will set up wherever there’s an open rectangle. May we all aspire to be like these yogis, as they are able to practice true mental flexibility, an area in which we could all grow. Whether in the front, middle, back, or off to the side, the next time you roll out your mat, know that wherever you place it is exactly where you’re supposed to be. Yoga is the journey of the self. If we connect our heart and soul to our practice, it can help us to learn life lessons and to embrace changes in the workplace or elsewhere with a lot more ease. The transition toward the cooler Autumn season allows us to harness our energy and create a calmer, more regular rhythm for optimal health during the upcoming Fall and Winter. Poses like tree and warriors (1,2,3) are wonderful poses to find balance and help us accept all the challenges and changes with grace and dignity. The winds of change blow strong in the fall, but if we can learn to be steady and well grounded like in tree, and also sway with the wind without resisting it, we will be resilient like a warrior. While the tree pose teaches us to get the right balance between steadiness and swaying, the warrior pose teaches us to be ready for everything. What gives strength to the tree against the wind is its roots. While pursuing our dreams, challenging times may come. But if we remain rooted with our yogic values, they will provide us necessary support and strength to power through seasonal shifts. I am not even the mind.” - Sadhguru (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever thought to yourself, “Am I a yogi?” It might seem like a loaded question. What constitutes calling yourself a yogi? What do you have to do to earn that title? Is someone who practices yoga once a week a yogi? Do you have to practice every day to qualify? Do you have to sit for hours in silence and abide by all of the yogic principles in order to be worthy?
The answer is that you have to define it for yourself. One could practice asana every single day, know the Bhagavad Gita inside and out, have memorized all the yamas and the niyamas... but if they get rattled every time a beginner comes to class, or if they get irritated when things aren't done their way, are they a yogi? Perhaps not yet. To be a yogi is to practice unity. To practice yoga is to yolk, to unite; uniting body, mind, and breath with your inner spirit. How this looks could change each day. Some days you may be more yogic than others. There is no definite answer to the question of, “Am I a yogi?” Instead, see it as an opportunity for thought. Am I a yogi? Well, do you want to be one? If so and if you feel that you're not one yet, what steps can you take to become one? Maybe it's practicing a bit more kindness towards others on a daily basis. Maybe it's fostering a sense of community within your yoga studio. Maybe it's practicing asana more often. With this question, don't stress. Just get curious. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK!
