AUTUMN: A SEASON OF CHANGE & COMING HOME There is something quietly magical about autumn. The light begins to soften. The mornings arrive with a little more crispness in the air. Temperatures gently fall, leaves transform from green to brilliant shades of gold, amber, red, and russet—and then, slowly, they let go. Autumn reminds us that change is not something to resist. It is something to move with. And perhaps nowhere is this more beautifully reflected than in our yoga practice. The Wisdom of Letting Go Watch a tree in autumn. It doesn't cling to every leaf. When the season changes, the tree releases what it no longer needs, trusting that letting go is part of its natural rhythm. Our practice can offer us the same invitation. As we move through our autumn days, we might ask ourselves: What am I ready to release? Perhaps it is tension we have been carrying in the body. An expectation. A habit. A thought pattern. The need to have everything figured out. Yoga gives us a place to notice these things without judgment—and, with the breath, create a little more space around them. From Expansion to Grounding Summer naturally encourages outward movement: longer days, warmer temperatures, more activity, more time outside. Autumn begins to turn our attention inward. As the temperature drops, we instinctively seek warmth and grounding. Our yoga practice can follow this seasonal shift with slower, more intentional movement. This can be a beautiful time to explore:
Rather than asking, How much can I do today?, autumn invites us to ask, What does my body need today? Finding Beauty in Transition The changing colors of the leaves are perhaps one of autumn's greatest teachings. A leaf doesn't become less beautiful because it is changing. Its beauty is found in the transformation. Our lives are much the same. There are seasons of growth, seasons of blooming, seasons of transition, and seasons of rest. Yoga teaches us to meet each moment as it is—to observe, breathe, adapt, and remain present. A pose may feel different from one day to the next. Our energy changes. Our bodies change. Our circumstances change. The practice is not to remain exactly the same. The practice is to learn how to move gracefully with change. A Simple Autumn Practice As the weather becomes cooler, try beginning your practice with a few extra minutes of gentle movement. Start seated or lying down. Notice the temperature of the room. Feel the breath moving in and out. Allow your attention to settle. Then slowly awaken the body with: Cat–Cow → Child's Pose → Low Lunge → Mountain Pose → Warrior II → Forward Fold → Gentle Twist → Savasana Move slowly enough to feel each transition. With every inhale, imagine creating space. With every exhale, imagine releasing what you no longer need. And when you arrive in stillness, simply notice. The breath. The body. The season. The moment. An Autumn Reflection As the leaves change around us, perhaps we can give ourselves permission to change, too. We don't have to hold on to every version of ourselves. We don't have to rush toward whatever comes next. We can simply stand where we are, breathe deeply, and trust the season we are in. May this autumn bring you warmth, grounding, spaciousness, and the courage to let go. May your practice be a place to honor change—not as something to fear, but as something beautiful to move through. HOT VINYASA IN L.I.C. QUEENS "Something new is taking shape in Long Island City.
