THE SACRED PRACTICE OF RETURNING As we enter the reflective season of Yom Kippur, it can be meaningful to consider the surprising parallels between this Jewish day of atonement and the practice of yoga. At their heart, both invite us to pause, turn inward, and return to what matters most. Yoga is more than physical movement. Through breath, stillness, and mindful awareness, yoga encourages us to quiet the noise of everyday life and reconnect with ourselves. It asks us to notice where we are holding tension, where we have become disconnected, and how we might create greater balance between body, mind, and spirit. Yom Kippur offers a similar opportunity through a distinctly Jewish spiritual path. It is a day of fasting, prayer, reflection, repentance, and forgiveness. We are invited to examine the past year honestly—to acknowledge where we have fallen short, seek forgiveness from others and from God, and consider how we want to live differently in the year ahead. Both practices remind us that transformation begins with awareness. We cannot change what we are unwilling to see. Yoga teaches us to meet ourselves on the mat without judgment, while Yom Kippur asks us to meet ourselves with honesty and humility. Both recognize the value of creating sacred space away from our usual routines so that we can listen more deeply. Perhaps the most beautiful connection is the idea of returning. In yoga, we return again and again to the breath, to the present moment, to our center. In Judaism, teshuvah—often translated as repentance, but literally connected to the idea of “return”—invites us to return to our values, our relationships, and our most authentic selves. As Yom Kippur approaches, may we embrace the wisdom of both traditions: slow down, breathe, reflect, forgive, reconnect, and begin again. May this season bring greater awareness to our bodies, compassion to our hearts, and intention to the way we move through the world. G'mar Chatimah Tovah — may we all be sealed for a good year.
