HOT YOGA AND UJJAYI BREATHING: WHAT’S THE CONSENSUS? (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) One of the most well-known forms of pranayama (breath control) in hot yoga is Ujjayi breath. Also known as “victorious breath,” this Darth Vader-like sound emanates from a constriction of the glottis in the back of the throat. Narrowing the vocal cords in this way reduces the amount of air that can pass through, causing a potentially uncomfortable sensation at first. Over time, practitioners learn to regulate their Ujjayi breath and even out the length of their inhalations and exhalations.
A lot of people associate Ujjayi breath with its heat-building reputation, which causes some to wonder if it’s necessary in hot yoga. After all, the room is hot enough; why add to that? The truth is that Ujjayi breath is not just about building heat. It’s actually about temperature control, which means it can help regulate both the heating and cooling of the body. There are also several of other benefits of incorporating Ujjayi breath into your yoga practice, including:
These aren’t just anecdotal claims. They’ve actually been studied by the National Center on Health, Physical Activity, and Disability. While Ujjayi breath isn’t mandatory in hot yoga or any form of yoga for that matter, it may be a worthwhile addition to your practice if you’re looking to elevate it to the next level. So the next time you feel your attention running amok, excess tension, heightened anxiety, or even the heat getting to you in class, try bringing in a little Ujjayi breath. It may be exactly what you need. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! If you want to set up any private sessions or events, please contact me through email. You can learn more about privates: CLICK HERE! I got what you want Sweating is essential for the human body to regulate itself. And during this transition to a warmer season, you'll be sweating more during yoga and throughout the day. But when is the best time to drink water so it complements your yoga?
Your best strategy to prepare for a yoga class on hotter days is to drink plenty of fluids the day before a class and if on the same day, you should intake hydrating fluids 3-4 hours before. Make it water, nutrient-rich clear drinks or juice blends even sports drinks. Add to your day plenty of fruits and vegetables. And most of all, with any class, make sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate after. If possible, avoid drinking water immediately before or during class. In addition to making our physical bodies feel inflated, consuming large amounts of water before or during a practice also interferes with our energy bodies; one theory says that sipping during yoga practice is akin to pouring water over our inner fire as we try to build it. In Yoga and Ayurveda, it is thought that a sip of water during practice disrupts the body’s energy and concentration. Hydration before will make you perform better, increasing strength and flexibility. A lack of water can damage the cardiovascular system & your body will have difficulties regulating itself. This makes yoga a strain and limits your performance. Hydration ensures that your immune system functions properly so that you do not get sick or feel stomach pains by flushing out toxins. Muscle weakness, muscle cramping, fatigue, irritability, and headaches are just some of the symptoms of electrolyte imbalance. Ultimately, a yoga practice can be used to reduce compulsions and become more comfortable with discomforts. When we lean into resisting the urge to drink water, or go to the bathroom, we become better at dealing with the discomforts of life such as hunger, thirst, or the weather. After yoga, feel free to drink your favorite tea, water, or electrolyte-enhanced water to replenish the body and get ready for your next practice. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) As a yogi, you’ve probably found yourself asking this question at least once throughout your journey of practicing yoga: do I really need savasana?
Sure, it’s a nice little moment of relaxation after what may have been a strenuous yoga class, but I’m busy! I have people to see, places to go, decisions to make! I don’t have an extra 5 minutes to just lay on my mat and…breathe. But what if you do? What if you do have an extra 3-5 minutes to lay on your mat and just breathe. And what if that just breathing gives you even more time throughout the rest of your day? Would you reconsider the value of savasana then? Savasana is just one of the many things that differentiates the yoga practice from other calisthenics or moving meditations. Yoga is special for a multitude of reasons, one of them being the chance to reset every time we come to the mat. Savasana, in its very translation, is a reset. The word savasana means “corpse pose,” and while to some that signifies death, the ancient yogis see it as a rebirth; a chance to take the lessons and wisdom you’ve garnered from your life thus far and use them as a way to propel you forward in the next life. If that sounds a little too out there, consider this: savasana may be an opportunity for your body to absorb the benefits of your yoga practice, both physical and mental, and use them as a way to make the rest of your day, week, or life even better. So yes, you really do need savasana. Challenging though it may be, this is where the real yoga begins. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK!
