“Calmness is a bed where flowers grow.” #Namaste! We hear it in class, we say it post-class, but do we know what it means? Namaste is an ancient Sanskrit word with Hindu roots that dates all the way back to the Vedic period. It’s an expression that has been used for thousands of years and while Namaste has many different translations and uses, it is above all an expression of respect. Namaste is a declaration of appreciation, a non-contact expression and respect towards another person, entity or deity. It can be used as a hello greeting and even as a goodbye, so you might say Namaste upon meeting someone, or before parting ways. It is derived from two key Sanskrit words: Namah: bow, adoration, salutation Te: to you Are you ready to honor yourself and others with a Namaste greeting, but you’re not sure how to express it correctly? The good news: there is no ‘right’ way to say Namaste, as long as it is being used as an expression of reverence, respect and gratitude. It is a three-syllable word that is pronounced naah – muh – stay. Just like chanting Om, you may or may not feel comfortable bowing and saying Namaste at the end of a yoga class. Only you can decide if incorporating Namaste into your practice and interactions with others makes sense. You can most certainly convey the intention behind Namaste without ever speaking the word, if you so choose. Just like your asana practice, honor yourself, and meet yourself where you are. If and when you’re ready to say Namaste, you’ll know. ANOTHA' ONE... Victor Vicyasa™ Cotto has landed @omyogamagazine... issue 146, October 2023. Here's a link to the online feature: CLICK HERE. AM I A YOGI? “I am not the body. I am not even the mind.” - Sadhguru (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever thought to yourself, “Am I a yogi?” It might seem like a loaded question. What constitutes calling yourself a yogi? What do you have to do to earn that title? Is someone who practices yoga once a week a yogi? Do you have to practice every day to qualify? Do you have to sit for hours in silence and abide by all of the yogic principles in order to be worthy?
The answer is that you have to define it for yourself. One could practice asana every single day, know the Bhagavad Gita inside and out, have memorized all the yamas and the niyamas... but if they get rattled every time a beginner comes to class, or if they get irritated when things aren't done their way, are they a yogi? Perhaps not yet. To be a yogi is to practice unity. To practice yoga is to yolk, to unite; uniting body, mind, and breath with your inner spirit. How this looks could change each day. Some days you may be more yogic than others. There is no definite answer to the question of, “Am I a yogi?” Instead, see it as an opportunity for thought. Am I a yogi? Well, do you want to be one? If so and if you feel that you're not one yet, what steps can you take to become one? Maybe it's practicing a bit more kindness towards others on a daily basis. Maybe it's fostering a sense of community within your yoga studio. Maybe it's practicing asana more often. With this question, don't stress. Just get curious. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Fall is the season of transition & change... If we observe & spend time with nature during this beautiful season, it can teach us life-transforming lessons of acceptance, balance, letting go, surrender & reset. If we can adopt these in times of change, the change will be enjoyable. Yoga is the journey of the self. If we connect our heart and soul to our practice, it can help us to learn these life lessons and to embrace changes with a lot more ease. ACCEPT CHANGE AND IMPERMANENCE: The changing fall foliage leaves us wonderstruck, reminding us that change is the nature of life and change is beautiful. Admiring the changing leaves helps us be open to the surprises of nature and the inevitable twists and turns in our life. It also means having faith that some supreme power always protects us in all the transitions of life. LET GO AND SURRENDER: The equal division of day and night also reflects autumn’s lesson to relinquish and to harvest. Autumn is a season that invites us to consider releasing and surrendering what no longer serves us or what gets in the way of being present to the sacredness of each moment. It is the time to reflect and surrender our masks and become more truly who we already are. As the leaves change their shades to unfold their true colors, let us consider changing the things, habits, beliefs, and attitudes that cover our true nature. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Beautify your inner world with love light and compassion. Life will be beautiful.” Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that means "non-violence" and it is the foundation of all yogic philosophy. Defined as not having any desire to harm anyone or anything, either physically or psychologically, including ourselves when moving mindfully on our mat. It is a process of self-control, self-awareness and awareness of everything that is around you. If you harm someone intentionally, even when it is just in thought, you have lost control of your mind and you are in imbalance with yourself. Violence means moving away from your true nature and practicing ahimsa simply means coming closer to who you really are. As we begin to wind down this Summer, bring to light the practice of non-violence beyond the mat. Take note on how you feel when approaching your asana practice and invite more meaningful movement and process self control and be completely aware of what serves you in the moment as we move into the Fall months. She loves rainbows as much for fading as for their brilliance. It is easy for her, she opens her heart and accepts everything.” ― Morgan Llywelyn If you have a least favorite season -- and the ebbing and flowing of Summer to Fall is a tough one for you -- the practice of non-attachment is often key to finding balance and stability in life.
Whether you have a unfavorable winter outlook, like me, or you can't stand the thought of sweaty, humid beach days in the summer, practicing yoga as the seasons change will help you find your center and establish a peace of mind when it feels like time is slipping too quickly through your fingertips. Your body is tough enough to naturally adapt to any changes in the conditions around you, but a few rooting, centering asanas will make the process easier and allow you to let go of any resistance you may have so you can stay grounded and content through changes. Here are some yoga poses that will help you ground through the inner and outer changes that each season fluctuation presents: MOUNTAIN POSE (TADASANA) Steady, strong, and unshakable. Take time to exhale into this shape, ground securely and allow the growth and rooting at the base to keep you tall and proud. Make sure to pay attention to any shoulder rounding and avoid any lower back collapse. WARRIOR II (VIRABHADRASANA II) Planting both feet firmly into the ground will remind you to stay still and rooted as you breathe through this strengthening and lengthening posture. Keep your body strong, yet soft, finding the balance between power and gentleness, and using this bodily awareness to accept change with open arms. GODDESS POSE (UTKATA KONASANA) This asana will stretch and create room in your pelvis, so try visualizing this part of your body as an anchor, staying stable as change swirls in the air around you. Inhale, and root your feet into the earth. Exhale, and settle more deeply into the pose. EASY POSE (SUKHASANA) Just sitting comfortably might seem like the easiest thing in the world, but sometimes the least intricate poses are the most effective and powerful when it comes to staying grounded and centered. Try placing one hand on your heart, and keep the fingertips of your other hand tented on the ground. This will help stabilize you both physically and emotionally. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is yoga meditation?” There's good news for you: you’re already on the right path. Some people wonder if they need to dedicate a separate period of time to meditation aside from their physical asana practice. Others say yoga is enough. Which one is it: is yoga in and of itself meditation? The answer is that it depends. Yoga can be a form of moving meditation. When you check out of your thinking mind (for some of us, that's the overthinking mind), and tap into the single-pointed focus of breath and movement, yoga can certainly be a meditation. Some people are able to do this in a class setting while others are only able to achieve it in their home practice. Others still can't quite turn off the mental gymnastics that occur on an ongoing basis no matter how many vinyasas they do. There's nothing wrong with that, but for these people, a separate meditation practice may be beneficial. Questions to ask yourself as to whether your yoga practice is a meditation: - Am I able to put my to-do list on pause while I practice? - Am I constantly thinking about other things during yoga? - Do I feel focused while I'm in class? - Is my practice filled with judgment and evaluation? - Am I present when I practice? - What is the quality of my breath like? Asking yourself these questions may help you determine whether the yoga that you practice is serving as a form of moving meditation or if you would benefit from an extra 5 minutes of breathwork, transcendental meditation (TM), a meditation circle, or something else entirely. PAYMENT: VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- Victor@YogawithVictor.com NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” – Carl Jung Most forms of “modern” exercise-yoga were not developed based on the original tenets of ancient yoga practice nor were they developed based on the fundamental elements of kinesiology such as neuromuscular physiology, biomechanics, functional anatomy, or structural muscular physiology. Instead, these forms of yoga appear to have evolved through the somewhat haphazard, rather than deliberate, application of various forms of physical exertion and exercise to an ancient concept that was designed primarily for meditative purposes, not physical activity. That being said, does this suggest that all modern yoga training methods are flawed? Of course not. Especially if you're cultivating awareness. Awareness is one of the foremost gems of yoga. Through hours of stillness and listening we reveal the bad habits in our body (e.g. poor posture, quality/efficiency of movement) and in our mind (e.g. overwhelming and constant flood of thoughts and emotions). I have seen people in my classes change in various ways. For many, yoga opens the door to other positive lifestyle changes simply through greater awareness. People new to yoga often start off very disconnected from their body. Simple instructions such as “put your left foot on the mat and lift your right foot” may be challenging. In time, the dialogue between mind and body becomes more dynamic. Students begin making observations and connections, figuring things out themselves. Teachers provide a safe space - literal and figurative - and offer dynamic, clear and concise instructions for the integration of body and mind. On some levels, teaching yoga is the easiest thing... We are students first and foremost. I always continue to learn from my students and evolve and develop as a yoga teacher. Our ego gets the best of us, and yoga can become a contest to see who is the most flexible and the strongest. Gaining flexibility beyond what we need for our daily activities does not make us healthier or happier. In fact, through awareness, we realize what is a healthy stretch for our muscles and how not to take our joints to a point of irritation. That safe range and exploration with love and kindness is the yoga kicking in. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! If you want to set up any private sessions or events, please contact me through email. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Do you know why you practice yoga? You might; you might not. The reasons are plentiful. Some people practice for a very clear cut reason, such as to help recover from an injury or to stretch out their muscles. Others seek out a calming practice that helps quiet the mind by gently moving the body. There’s no correct answer, but it is good to ask: why do you practice yoga? Is it to get stronger? Is it to change your body? Is it to reconnect with your body? Is it to take a designated break from the rest of your day? Despite the communal way in which it is practiced, yoga is personal and everyone’s why is personal to them. Some reasons are purely aesthetic; others are spiritual; others still are a mix of both, and then some. As mentioned above, there is no right reason to practice yoga. Sure, we may have all heard the exasperated yogi stammer, “That’s not why you should practice yoga!” in a frustrated attempt to make a novice “get” it. But the truth is that there is no correct reason to come to the mat. It matters less why you came; it matters more why you stay. Yoga may be practiced solo or with others but in its true essence, it is an exploration of the Self. The concept of svadhyaya is self-study, meaning that yoga is an opportunity to learn more about who you are at your core. Moving forward, each time you roll out your mat, consider it an invitation to practice self-study and ask yourself, "Why am I practicing yoga today?" This could change every time or it could remain constant. Perhaps it is to learn a little more about you. GIVEAWAY TIME... Covey Leading a properly highly skilled power yoga class will make students feel like you hardly have to think at all. The teacher breathes with you, speaks clearly, and gives you a general feeling of ease, guiding you through a varying of challenging poses, seamless sequences all while also supporting you. In time, you begin to understand and feel how each pose is operating in your body, what muscles are being stretched or strengthened. You begin to pay attention to the way your body is moving on a daily basis both in and out of class. And you begin to think more critically about how to approach a pose, and possibly even how to approach life. Listening to one’s body, one’s mind, and one’s spirit comes with practice. And in the class setting it begins with listening to verbal prompts. I may have my own way of coming into a pose, but when I’m in a class I practice listening to the teacher for new ways at arriving at a particular pose because I want to know and feel the difference. I want to be open to learning new ways of operating in my body, of moving my body in this world, and of simply being. Listening, in the moment, to step by step instruction improves our ability to pay attention. Often in class, we are asked to let go of our thoughts, but this does not mean we stop thinking. Rather our thinking changes from things we’ve done or want to do, to the thing we are doing. We become present, paying attention to precisely what is happening in the moment. Our ears are open, our mind is exactly where our body is, and as we, through practice, reach that place of yoga– union between mind, body, and spirit– we gain a clearer understanding of our intention... the now moment. PAYMENT: VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- Victor@YogawithVictor.com NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ “Stretching your body and mind is essential to avoid rigidity.” Yes... it is possible to overstretch and "over do it" when practicing asana. At the end of a practice session are you feeling relaxed and invigorated or overly exhausted?
Some people can take to yoga easily, while others may struggle for an entire lifetime to achieve the same. What's important to remember is when we force our body into positions that it isn’t ready for, chances for injury increase. It doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t attempt poses that are challenging or complex. This is when body awareness, mindfulness and self love has to be integrated into yoga. Make sure to practice with care and awareness, listening to any signs from your body. Remember, you’re the only one who can really judge whether or not you’re overexerting, so better pay attention to any nudging sensations that may arise. Even the most experienced gurus will tell you that they are still learning and are struggling in one way or another. Yoga is a lifelong learning process. Those who claim they are already enlightened may be fooling themselves and others. A truly enlightened master will never make such claims. Am I just stretching or practicing yoga? Both may have the same aims, it is also possible that they have very different goals. For instance, stretching can help you recover from an injury, become more flexible, improve your athletic performance, or target a particular problem area. In contrast, whereas yoga is often for flexibility and focus, it can also be for strength, posture, and balance among many other mental and spiritual benefits. Whether you are just starting out in your practice or wish to master advanced postures, the best advice would be: practice yoga & stretch to your heart’s content, while keeping in mind that you want to feel good at the end of your practice – not exhausted. And most importantly, knowing that the work you put into yoga or stretching has added to your day and not undermined the quality of your life. GIVEAWAY TIME...
