“Earth is not a platform for human life. It’s a living being. We’re not on it but part of it. Its health is our health.” – Thomas Moore Earth Day was last week, and around the world, communities come together to promote environmental awareness. Trees are planted, roadsides and shorelines are cleaned up, companies are encouraged to make environmentally conscious changes, and individuals feel inspired to do their part to make the earth a better place for this and future generations.
In yoga philosophy, the first limb of the eight of yoga is ahimsa. which simply means non-harming. To practice ahimsa means to do no harm—to others or to the earth itself. It is one of the most widely cited of the yamas and niyamas. Yoga philosophy, although rooted in the present moment, takes a far-sighted viewpoint. The rule of karma states that, essentially, what goes around comes around. Treating the earth with respect, as the finite resource that it is is the logical practice of one who is in tune with yoga practice and philosophy. In yoga, the earth can be celebrated every day. Targeting environmental awareness is a great way to spread the enthusiasm for practices that help make the world a better place. This year, why not take your yoga practice outside to reconnect to nature and remind yourself that this paradise we live in deserves our attention and utmost respect. Take some time to consider how you live your life and whether or not any changes could be made to make your life even more earth friendly. Being in the presence of nature—feet on the ground, tucked into warm sand, breathing in fresh air and feeling the wind and sun on your skin—can help instill a renewed vigor that inspires you to recommit to environmental practices that may have fallen by the wayside. Getting close to the earth, touching it, feeling it, and resting the body on it is deeply calming. It’s a powerful reset. Practicing outside in nature is a powerful way to connect oneself to the rhythms of the Universe. This is something you just can’t experience within the confines of a yoga studio. A PEEK INTO MENTORSHIP WITH VICYASA™... Many prospective teachers, graduates of teacher training(s) and a handful of you that have a desire just to dive deeper into the many aspects of a yoga practice and teaching yoga regularly have been impacted greatly by our bespoke mentoring program. Mentorship sessions can include sharing the exact experience lived, the practical wisdom I and other teachers have gained from our journey in their domain. We are highly skilled at directing strategies and processes that can sometimes transfer across different contexts. Yoga is a journey as much as a practice. In fact, it's a journey that should never end. Those of us on that journey should be open to learning new things. We should be open to new experiences. That is what mentorship offers. It's an opportunity for a more experienced yoga teacher to share their experiences with you. I am willing to work with anyone on a 1:1 basis or mini-group. There will be suggestions for your practice/teachings, you get a catered to you manual with loads of vital information and to take notes and record your questions or concerns. I will curate a personalized practice for you, based on your interest, needs, questions and situation. You then take this practice into your own life. What you discovered, felt, experienced, or learned through the lens of our personal practice will then create the context for potential offerings or paths you take whether in your personal or business life. The practices may be adapted, changed, modified, or added to. This relationship is important for professionalized yoga teachers. It’s important because as we dive into the industry we often muddy the waters between ‘teaching’ and ‘personal path.' Furthermore the environment of the yoga industry can be difficult to navigate. No one should try to do it on their own. What if you're not a teacher and would like to prepare for training or enhance your ever-hungry-desire to absorb all things yoga? Holla' at me. Feel like your 200 hour training ended with you needing more questions answered? Want to expand on those teachings? Do you feel like there are areas of your teaching repertoire that need enhancing? Contact me for more info and enrollment. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! If you want to set up any private sessions or events, please contact me through email. ABOUT FINDING CONNECTIONS (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) In yoga, the word “sutra” translates to thread. Some might consider a thread a connection that binds one element of life to another. When we talk about sutras and connections in general, this opens up a discussion about what they are, how to find them, and what they mean for our everyday lives.
There are many ways to find connections: in person, online, at work, in specific communities (i.e., yoga studios, gyms, etc.). There are different forms of connection as well, including close friendships, passing glances, and acquaintances. A connection can be whatever you need it to be. Some connections are deeper than others. Some are full-on conversations and catch ups while others are knowing glances or shared smirks. Sometimes a connection isn’t even acknowledged; it’s just known. At times, you don’t even have to make eye contact to foster a connection. As long as you’re there in body, mind, or intention, there’s a connection happening. And at the end of the day, we are all connected because we are all on this earth, which means we are all connected to the universe In yoga’s physical asana practice, connections are often expressed in the form of binds. And just like in the real world, there are many ways to find connections or binds here as well:
Both of these are powerful ways to form connections to your own body and bring yourself into consciousness within the yoga room. Consider your connections. How do you find connections and form connections with the people in your life? How do you strengthen them? How do these connections serve you? PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Few things are so pressing that they cannot wait for a moment of breath.” - T.K.V. Desikachar (This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) It’s no secret that we live in a world in which more is considered better. The #nodaysoff hashtag may have popped up on your Instagram feed, potentially causing you to fall into the “rest is for the weary” lie of a mindset. We’ve been conditioned to believe that pushing through is always preferred, but when we take a step back and reflect on what is right for us in our bodies, the truth is that this might not be the case.
Ask yourself: should I practice or should I pause? This can be asked before you roll out your mat or in the middle of a yoga class. Should I practice this pose, this sun salutation, this sequence…or should I pause? Yoga is not about going through the motions without assessing what you need. Instead, perhaps the real yoga begins when we step away from the mat for a day or two. Pausing may give your physical body and your intellectual mind a chance to rinse off so when you return to your mat, it is with a fresh and rejuvenated perspective. Sometimes a day away is all you need to come back with an even more strongly reignited fire for your love of the practice. Signs it may be time to pause:
The wisest yogi is the one who knows when to practice and when to pause. SALE... $2.58 A DAY TO INVEST YOUR MIND/BODY Get multiple months of LIVE & On-demand yoga... for $155! When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open."― B.K.S. Iyengar To help us harmonize with this season and harness the spring energy, yoga and Ayurvedic practices are designed to melt the sludge and heaviness of winter. They help cleanse and remove built-up residue in the mind and body to release what is no longer needed and make room for growth and expansion.
While yoga always places a high value on purification of body and mind, spring is especially focused on release. You can enhance this by including poses that stimulate and revitalize the liver and large intestine to release toxins and brighten up. This week we'll focus on warming flows, twists, side leans, and mild inversions. We will build natural heat gradually to help generate sweat and naturally detoxify your body. Just as the darkness of winter changes to the rebirth of spring, so do we. Staying connected to your body and breath during this time will help you harness the inner wisdom and insight that solitude brings. With this clarity, you too can spring into action by bringing your insight to fruition. Honoring this transition in your yoga practice can help to ease you into this revitalizing season. (This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever stopped to think about whether the type of yoga you’re practicing really serves you? Or if there is another form that might work better for you on a different day, at a different time, or in a different circumstance?
Yoga comes in a multitude of varieties. While hatha yoga may be the oldest to date, many other forms have branched off from the original version to bring us the current buffet of options we enjoy today. Popular styles include hatha, vinyasa, Iyengar, bikram, kundalini, and yin, but the list doesn’t stop there. The modern world in which we live has new forms of the practice popping up everywhere. With so much variety, why just stick to one? The different lineages of yoga each serve their own unique purpose. Some, like vinyasa, are more geared towards flexibility, while others such as hatha, focus more on breath work. Yin yoga, for example, prioritizes long holds to get deep into the fascia. The beauty of knowing about the different forms of yoga is that you can choose what’s right for you based on your mood, your day, and your position in life. The way we feel varies day to day; similarly, the type of yoga we practice can as well. When deciding the type of yoga that is right for you, consider the following questions: What do you want to get out of it? Do you need more grounding? Do you need more energy? Do you need more structure? (ashtanga). Do you need more freedom? (vinyasa). Perhaps you need to sit still. That, too, is yoga in its most fundamental sense. The Vicyasa™ platform offers several styles and levels of yoga, available for practitioners of all abilities. Find the one that speaks to you. And during this transition to a warmer season, you'll be sweating more during yoga and throughout the day. But when is the best time to drink water so it complements your yoga? Your best strategy to prepare for a yoga class on hotter days is to drink plenty of fluids the day before a class and if on the same day, you should intake hydrating fluids 3-4 hours before. Make it water, nutrient-rich clear drinks or juice blends even sports drinks. Add to your day plenty of fruits and vegetables. And most of all, with any class, make sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate after. If possible, avoid drinking water immediately before or during class. In addition to making our physical bodies feel inflated, consuming large amounts of water before or during a practice also interferes with our energy bodies; one theory says that sipping during yoga practice is akin to pouring water over our inner fire as we try to build it. In Yoga and Ayurveda, it is thought that a sip of water during practice disrupts the body’s energy and concentration. Hydration before will make you perform better, increasing strength and flexibility. A lack of water can damage the cardiovascular system & your body will have difficulties regulating itself. This makes yoga a strain and limits your performance. Hydration ensures that your immune system functions properly so that you do not get sick or feel stomach pains by flushing out toxins. Muscle weakness, muscle cramping, fatigue, irritability, and headaches are just some of the symptoms of electrolyte imbalance. Ultimately, a yoga practice can be used to reduce compulsions and become more comfortable with discomforts. When we lean into resisting the urge to drink water, or go to the bathroom, we become better at dealing with the discomforts of life such as hunger, thirst, or the weather. After yoga, feel free to drink your favorite tea, water, or electrolyte-enhanced water to replenish the body and get ready for your next practice. SALE... Love and light, Victor “The body benefits from movement, and the mind benefits from stillness.” Throughout the day, we breathe predominantly through one nostril or the other. This is a natural operation called the “nasal cycle,” wherein our nostrils alternate being more congested. For example, when the left nostril is more congested, we breathe more through the right nostril, i.e., the right nostril is “dominant” during that period.
Scientists have discovered that when your right nostril is dominant, the EEG (recording of brain activity) is greater in the left cerebral hemisphere [each hemisphere controls the opposite side of the body], and when the nostril dominance switches, so does the activity of the brain hemisphere. The cooperation between the right and left brain is essential for us to learn better, function more intelligently, and become proficient in anything. Whatever it is you are engaged in—reading, writing, music, art, yoga—each hemisphere has something important to contribute for you to have access to both technique and inspiration. We balance breathing in yoga and find stability through our pranayama (control of the breath). Therefore moving the body & controlling the breath will facilitate brain integration. So check in with yourself during our practice and either slow down or check in whether the pranayama is working with the asana to create a higher level of operation. In order to live a balanced, creative, integrated life, filled with connected relationships, it’s crucial that our two hemispheres of our brain work together. And facilitating that in yoga can lead to greater level of functioning throughout the day. YOGA IN THE PARK...
