Sorry to disappoint, but these are trick questions: there is no right way to teach or practice yoga!
Some instructors teach yoga by demonstrating the entire class. Others walk around and let their verbal cues guide the practice. One is not more correct than the other but as a student, it's important to ask yourself: do I need the demo? There are so many ways to benefit from a yoga practice, whether online or in studio with fellow yogis. Regardless of where or how you practice, it's important to ask yourself if you really need a demo or if you're relying on it simply because it's there. Having a teacher demonstrate challenging poses can be helpful and valuable, especially if you've never done the pose before and you're learning it for the first time. Additionally, it's great to use demos to check for form and alignment. On the other hand, it's equally important to ask yourself if you really need the guidance or if you're watching the instructor out of habit. At that point, it may be time to turn off what you always do and tap into your intuition. Questions to ask yourself when it comes to taking a yoga class with vs. without demos: - Do I really need the demonstration or am I just used to it? - Do I trust myself enough to know how to come into these poses on my own? - Is the teacher giving clear, accurate cuing? If so, I may not need to watch them the entire time. In these cases, perhaps your breath can be your guide. Consider these questions the next time you take a class (with or without a teacher's demonstrations). Gestures of honoring and paying reverence to the natural world are part of a yoga practice that encourages us to appreciate and feel more connected to the rhythms of life. In a world of uncertainty, a feeling of connection to the changing seasons can bring great comfort. The Sun is a force essential to all life on earth. In one way or another, every living being is dependent on the Sun for life. Consider your breathing; your breath nourishes you as the Sun nourishes the trees, who are vital to our exchange of life, creating the air you breathe. If you consider food, you’ll find the same is true, as the Sun nourishes the plants that make up most (if not all) of the human diet. The Sun is important in many other ways as well, serving as the basis for time itself (days, years, calendars), as well as dictating the role of the seasons, growing cycles, and climates we find ourselves in. But why 108 sun salutes? This is one of the key astrological moments of the year. This sacred number is vital... we have 108 nadis (energy channels in the body) that merge in the heart chakra, there are 9 traditional planets and 12 zodiac signs. 9 x 12 = 108, the Matrika Malini (Sanskrit alphabet) has 54 letters, each with a masculine and feminine vibration. 54 + 54 = 108, traditional malas (meditation beads) have 108 beads, there are 108 names for god in yoga. So if 108 sun salutes are out of reach, you can also simply practice 9 salutations. There are 12 postures in a sun salute, and 9 x 12 = 108. What’s something amazing/exciting that happened? What am I most looking forward to in this new season? Ultimately, using a journal is a tool to help you cultivate a deeper relationship with yourself and tap into vulnerability, which is, after all, one of the reasons we inherently love when we're on the mat. Despite years of regular weekly lessons, practitioners may not be able to draw their attention inwards and one reason sometimes is due to an emphasis on competitive achievement. People’s competitive sides often prevent the mind from directing inward. This competitive way of directing attention outwardly during yoga lessons does not lead into deep practices. Prematurely focusing on advanced postures is another reason for not tapping into higher states of yoga. Many years ago, students did not have access to the numerous pictures of complex yoga postures that are seen scattered across the internet. One method of teaching had the teacher only demonstrating the next and more advanced posture when the aspirant was ready to receive the new knowledge. In such schools, beginners did not practice with or even look into advanced classes. In this manner the student remained blank, their attention focused on a present practice and not future possibilities. The direction the student took was decided by the teacher, based on the innate talent of the student. Regardless of where you are in your practice, yoga will teach you to appreciate your body and its abilities. It’s common to start yoga and think you should immediately be able to do an inversion or arm balance and when you can’t - we beat ourselves up for it. It doesn’t take long, however, before the essence of yoga grabs you and you become aware of the negative self-talk and find a way to switch it off. The more you turn up and tune in, the easier this gets. The more you come to see your body in a different light and realise that it is truly amazing. We then cherish what we can do, what we can accomplish and not look at ourselves with judgement, but with a love that only comes through when we embrace a practice that is devoted and adoring the self.
