Do you realize patience can be honed, just like any other skill?
Discouragement, frustration and ultimately anger are results of a well-meaning battle that we lose with patience. Some of us are less equipped with this necessary virtue than others; short temper, exasperation, and inappropriate behavior are results of... and we have all faced these emotions and a stress output due to patience-less status. Practicing patience on and off the mat is a large part of the Yogic philosophy. Patience balances the mind and body allowing the individual to wade through situations and challenges. Our ability to demonstrate patience is tied to our emotional and mental state of mind. Something which can be explored through the flow of your yoga practice. The transitions from one asana [pose] to another is just as important as holding and striking a pose. The awareness between asanas builds consciousness for the moment and honors its existence. Learning to take life as it flows, minute to minute is one the greatest takeaways from a yoga practice. Breathing, while holding a pose determines resilience and hardiness applicable to incidents in life that require as much flexibility, twists and turns as that yoga pose we grapple to hold. Stability, be it in life or on the mat comes with patience, something which the quaintest of poses can teach you. Poses like Vrksasana (Tree Pose) develop grounding principles even in adverse situations, like a tree in the midst of a windstorm. Your breathing and determination to stay upright and not wobble teaches you patience like no other pose. Warrior-One (Virabhadrasana) demands strength of the body and mind, resilience and flexibility. A test for the senses, the stretch could burn, and expose you to face and overcome mental conflicts. Savasana's (Corpse pose) slow breathwork puts your mind and body in silence and entering a state of Yoga Nidra requires you to be patient with every single aspect of your being. DO I REALLY NEED SAVASANA? (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. As a yogi, you’ve probably found yourself asking this question at least once throughout your journey of practicing yoga: do I really need savasana?
Sure, it’s a nice little moment of relaxation after what may have been a strenuous yoga class, but I’m busy! I have people to see, places to go, decisions to make! I don’t have an extra 5 minutes to just lay on my mat and…breathe. But what if you do? What if you do have an extra 3-5 minutes to lay on your mat and just breathe. And what if that just breathing gives you even more time throughout the rest of your day? Would you reconsider the value of savasana then? Savasana is just one of the many things that differentiates the yoga practice from other calisthenics or moving meditations. Yoga is special for a multitude of reasons, one of them being the chance to reset every time we come to the mat. Savasana, in its very translation, is a reset. The word savasana means “corpse pose,” and while to some that signifies death, the ancient yogis see it as a rebirth; a chance to take the lessons and wisdom you’ve garnered from your life thus far and use them as a way to propel you forward in the next life. If that sounds a little too out there, consider this: savasana may be an opportunity for your body to absorb the benefits of your yoga practice, both physical and mental, and use them as a way to make the rest of your day, week, or life even better. Once the 90-minute sweat-fest was over, the rain stopped and a studio full of yogis went on their way to enjoy the rest of their weekend. Again, it was a true pleasure leading the donation vinyasa class today. Big shout out to all the hardcore yogis who weathered the storm to get their asana action. Tomorrow, I'll be at Earth Yoga NYC for a 75-minute hot vinyasa flow. Oh, that's at 10 am. Bakasana (crow) on an edge of a cliff… Forget that! How about savasana (corpse pose) anywhere and everywhere? Now that's the prime photo-op for every aspiring yogi and asana junkie! Arguably the most vital of poses, savasana, is the final gateway to bliss and complete absorption. After a rigorous practice, many times the benefits aren't truly realized because the practitioner deprives themselves of a enriching pause. Even during a hectic day, finding time to just lay down and feel your inhalations and exhalations in this pose can be valuable. Besides all the impactful benefits; decreasing of the heart-rate, relaxation of the skeletal and visceral muscles, lowering of tension and anxiety along with increasing energy levels and stimulating the ability to concentrate… why wouldn't anyone want to deepen their awareness with a corpse pose anytime or anywhere? At work. At home. Getting to your yoga class early and easing into it and ending your asana practice with a prolonged savasana. Alright… lets do it. Anytime… anywhere. Get your savasana on! |
