Our ancient experience confirms at every point that everything is linked together, everything is inseparable. Never would I ever imagined US being where we are right now! It's been seemingly several hundred days since we began quarantine and life was altered. What has been unimaginable initially, but very inspiring is how we have built a massive community of yoga practitioners online that has not wavered and are rooted in our determination to feel good, savor our journey into an exploration of self-awareness & creating a common place for us to realize...
No pandemic, no quarantine... can separate us, can sever human connection or the fact that we are all linked as the above quote says. This past week, we reached the 200 class total mark... and more than that tally, we've amassed many more mindful souls to unite in breathing, movement, brotherhood & sisterhood. I salute you all for creating this and continuing this. “Conscious breathing is the best antidote to stress, anxiety and depression.” For centuries, yogis have used breath control [pranayama] to promote concentration and improve vitality. Buddha advocated breath-meditation as a way to reach enlightenment. Scientific studies have demonstrated that breathing practices can help reduce symptoms associated with anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and attention deficit disorder. It's widely instituted now, the practice of mindful breathing at schools and workplaces. Consciously changing the way you breathe sends signals to the brain to adjust the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, which can slow heart rate and digestion and promote feelings of calm as well as the sympathetic system, which controls the release of stress hormones like cortisol [nature’s built-in alarm system]. So when we practice, why do we hold our breath? Why do you move quickly, speed up the breath or are not mindful of truly connecting breathe & movement? Ask yourself why are you practicing the opposite of control when we step onto the mat to bring a sense of order to our lives? Here's a key to getting stronger in your practice, moving with fluidity, controlling your limbs when floating into poses, and lightly gliding the body into inversions and arm-balances... BREATHE with control! Per Yoga scholar Kelly Murphy, "If you feel yourself gasping for air or tension arises [during your yoga practice] in the jaw, throat or temples, it means you are working too aggressively," & not being functional to development of a mindful practice. Om brings out that meaning which is hidden in your soul.” ― Amit Ray OM [pronounced AUM] is believed to be the sounds of the world and contains within it, all the other sounds in the world. When OM is chanted and repeated, it resonates through the body and penetrates into one’s body and soul.
The entire universe is made up of vibrating, pulsating energy. Om is the humming sound of this cosmic energy. It is considered the all-pervading, all connecting sound of the universe and the vibration that connects us all. So as such when we chant OM, we symbolically and physically tune in the sound of the universe and realize the connection we have with nature and other living beings.
