“Never be afraid to fall apart because it is an opportunity to rebuild yourself the way you wish you had been all along.” ― Rae Smith As many of you know already, per announcements I've made all week pre-&-post classes, the time to reset, rejuvenate and recover has come. Since March, before studios started closing at a rapid rate, and just 24-hours after The Yoga Room closed their doors temporarily due to COVID-19, I've gone hard, teaching well over 250 classes virtually on my network, in addition to serving weekly at Living Yoga and doing LIVE classes outdoors and other venues in the city.
Teaching is emotional -- and more so during these days -- physically demanding and can be very exhausting, especially when you don't take any days off. I want to provide the best experiences and when you take a class with me, I want to make sure that you are safe, help cultivate a session where you can shine, be joyous and highlight the luminous being you are with high quality service. This much needed "time out" is a way for me to come back stronger and better equipped to continue to serve your Yoga needs and do it with a fully charged battery. I hope you understand and honor the space & time I need currently to re-integrate and reboot. How does this affect you? I will not teach starting August 30th through September 4th, 2020. During that time, everyone's account will be frozen. So, if you purchased a 30-day subscription or a 2-week package, you will NOT lose any days. For example, if you had 10-days left in your subscription as of Aug. 29th, when I come back to teach on Sept. 5th, you will still have 10-days left in your subscription. You will get what you paid for! I will edit everyone's expire dates and your subscription will be honored fully! Our automated email system for you to renew and access our virtual rooms will be up-to-date with the new account details. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. In the coming days I'll start the process of giving you new expiration dates. CONTEST: Everyone who has purchased 10-class packs, 2 week packages or 30-days unlimited since August 10th through August 29th, will be eligible to win a 60-minute private session. This can be done in person, or on Zoom. The class will be catered to your desires and can include friends/family [or be a solo class]. I will do the drawing and announce the winner LIVE when I get back from Wyoming. Oh yeah... that's where I'm headed. Going to Grand Teton National Park. OUTDOOR CLASSES/IN-PERSON CLASSES etc. Yes, when I get back... we will continue our outdoor sessions. More collaborative classes, rooftops, outdoors and candlelight events. Here's your schedule for this week: (This week's outdoor class will be led by myself & Christina Broccolo - my colleague at TYR. Most of what activates our fight-or-flight response is not a matter of life or death. We may feel pressured to accomplish a certain task or worried about what will happen at tomorrow’s meeting—but our lives don’t depend upon the outcome. Most distress comes from habitual thought patterns that create the experience of stress -- overreactions to events in our lives.
Practice helps us understand our mental habits by giving us the opportunity to observe them from a neutral vantage point. The more we practice yoga & meditation, the more we will be able to discriminate between what is real and what is not—between what is truly life-threatening and what is just a habitual overreaction. There is no shortcut through this process, but a clear mind is attainable, a reset and re-wiring of how we think, react and respond is a product of a consistent non-violent [AHIMSA] yoga practice. Her website Chichilifenyc.com featured your homeboy in her "These fitness teachers help me get strong," blog.
If you don't know who she is... you better recognize! Lauren is a two-time Cancer thriver who brings sunshine, positive energy and smiles to everything she does. She's a true hero, a person to admire and a straight-up bad ass! Her husband, Russ, was a major part of my life... is a graduate of a 200-Hour Yoga Training I co-led at Earth Yoga NYC. Now a mama of two, Lauren is one of tons of fitness instructors taking their teachings into the virtual world, while also bringing-it in small live classes. Interested in Barre, Pilates, TRX training, group or individual, or know of anyone who need Cancer Exercise training or Pre-Natal Pilates, contact or book a class with Lauren HERE. “What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.” The interaction between emotions and breathing is usually involuntary and we do not pay much attention to it throughout the day. Yet the practice of attending to the breath can reduce energy loss and help us better manage our emotions.
Emotional energy is like a fire. Carefully tended, it can warm us and sustain us. Left uncontrolled, it can burn & ravage. Primitive instincts kick-in when survival mode is flipped on and knee-jerk reactions happen with more frequency. We misread our environment and situations. When we practice breathing control on and off our mat, accept the positive feelings as well as negative ones, little ones as well as big ones, because they all contain energy that can be used to uplift, strengthen, soothe, balance, energize or renew yourself. With practice, you can lift yourself up or calm yourself down. You can use the breath to remain clear and loving, peaceful and creative, even in the most exciting and challenging moments of your life! The divine state of yoga union when you were so engrossed in asana and pranayama that you lost track of time and you were not bound by limitations, or the monkey mind that constraints us with doubts or what we perceive are obstructions.
When we practice, we can tap into a "zone" state that stimulates us & gives us a euphoric experience of bliss and being infinite. We are tapping into our prefrontal cortex — the region of the brain that controls higher cognitive functions like self-reflection and analytical thinking — and it takes a break during our deeply integrated practice. The result is a temporary loss of ego, followed by effortless information processing, which boosts the yogi's subtle awareness and our instincts begin to take over. It's pleasure! Our yoga... harmonizes mind, body, energy, and the environment around us to achieve enlightenment. Come back to the essence of the practice always to cultivate that limitless potential inside of us to realize, succeed and bask in the glory that is real and attainable.
