Want to build heat in your practice? I got'yah!

The practice of yoga, when given true care and awareness can help you build heat and it ignites a rise in heat to the body, invigorates your internal organs, activates muscles and gets your cardiovascular system excited.

Step 1: True attention to the Breath: keep the breathing consistent, control your prana (upward rising energy) and apana (outward flow). Are you really focused on your breathing or are you more worried about the posture, aesthetic of the pose and the next pose rather than staying in tune with the inhale and exhale? When we don’t connect with our breathing, the joints and muscles will be rigid and then you cannot align physically on the mat to meet your needs.

Step 2: Focus on your alignment: It is imperative for muscular development and advancement into structured poses to practice proper alignment that serves your body's needs. Instead of over-stretching, practicing the same variations without taking note of your spatial positioning and not being self-aware of mechanics, allow the muscles to engage around our skeletal structure and allow your alignment to help you create heat through fitting positioning in poses.

Step 3: What are we eating or drinking pre-class, doing pre-class? Select your foods carefully, drink hot drinks, warm foods and avoid inflammatory foods and alcohol. A hot shower or warm bath prior to the practice is also recommended.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a compilation of verses that serve as a guide to attain wisdom and self-realization through your yogic journey. The word 'sutra' means to 'thread.' And to combine together and unite is to Yoga.

When we practice together, we are in our yoga-state. When we focus, harness our potential, overcome challenges, learn to make better choices, get in tune with our body and mind and how to process information, we scratch the surface of the wisdom of the verses within the Yoga Sutras.

As we approach almost a full year practicing virtually, adapting and continuing to integrate ourselves and stay threaded within the community, we have learned how to implement the principles, techniques, and practices to become functional in this evolving world. That is powerful and inspiring... and that is why yoga has survived for thousands of years and will continue moving forward.

We will continue to move forward as well and strive in our own glory!

Karen Hyland, Josh Mathew-Meier and Erin Giordano are back this week for some yoga flow and interval training!

This week we welcome Babette Godefroy to the team, as she'll lead a Sunday afternoon session in our efforts to expand the schedule on weekends.

Through our yoga, we become aware of our own divinity. We explore and practice accepting our individual and unique expression of the Divine, regardless how it’s manifesting in any one moment: joy, pain, laughing, crying, raw, messy, uncomfortable, beautiful, miraculous -- exquisite energy of our individuality and oneness.

This practice nourishes are well-being because you connect the true essence of the self. While we stretch, tighten and release during the poses, thoughts give way to the energy flowing from within -- the divine spirit in us.

Self-care is defined as "the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health." The consistency we create for ourselves  for self-care will go a long way toward determining how happy or unhappy, and how vital or how depleted we are. How we focus our mental energies and choose self-health will impact our wellspring of health. Our essence shines when we connect our heart to our rhythms of day-to-day life and then we make wise choices based on the balance we create through our yoga practice and attention to mind/body wellness.

Practice yoga in everything, get out in nature, appreciate the people around you and let them love you—transcend calm on the mat, be kind and remember to restore the body, and rejuvenate post-class . We are all a lot more special and resilient than we realize. The practice of self-care just illuminates that.

This week we have Karen twice, Erin twice and Josh twice. BARRE has been moved to 9am on Monday morning, so you early risers can get the heart-rate up & treat yourself to some low impact and high intensity work to slay the week. Jennifer Oviedo is back to lead us through a sweet 10-minute meditation to cap our Thursday evening session.

Seasonal Affective Disorder can be disabling for many during the cold Winter months. How to beat the cold, the effects of post-holiday events and the short days with daylight? MOVEMENT. A steady Yoga practice, along with breathwork and a regular schedule to keep you on track is the best way to release tension, stay invigorated and increase your serotonin levels so you can triumph during the coldest days of the year.

Poses like backbends can help awaken, legs up the wall regulates circulation and twists nourish the spine and internal organs.

Six teachers on the schedule this week... YAASSSSS! Our platform has undergone a huge transformation in 10 months. When I first started this on March 18, I scheduled 10-14 classes by myself weekly, and developed this easy to use dependable system of delivery, in my unwavering effort to grow our community. YOU RESPONDED!

How did I respond? We now have 20+ offerings weekly, had loads of outdoor offerings in parks, rooftops, backyards, collaborations with 10+ teachers and currently offer varying disciplines, the same reliable system, a full rosters of NYC's top instructors and have created by far the largest independent teacher platform in the tri-state area. I want to thank all the members who have been on this ride since March and the hundreds who have adopted our Yoga at OHHHM virtual studio for all your mind/body needs. I'm proud to say that we have now over 10,000 classes attended by all of our members.

This week, Becca Pace will make her debut with her amazing bodyArt™ signature class. The sixty minute class fuses elements of Yoga, strength building, cardio and classical breathing techniques.

Karen Hyland is bringing the intensity in her fun BARRE FIT and will do double duty delivering her liberating flow Yoga style. Tanya Mgrdechian will blast your core and glutes in her joyous mat pilates class. Josh Mathew-Meier is a messenger of mindfulness and his Yoga classes present equal parts vigor and sweetness. Erin Giordano's high intensity interval training class gets the heart-pumping, the body sweating and the muscles pulsing.

Catch all of them this week, as we continue to create what is the best virtual-studio space, with a dependable schedule and top notch service to complement your life's needs.

As the weather gets colder and we begin to store away for the Winter and more time in stricter quarantine, we should become more introspective of our bodies & notice when the mental body imposes movements that may be 'right or wrong' or 'safe or unsafe' and go back to being curious, but still building trust. Allow your yoga practice to become an act of love -- build intimacy with your own breaths, pause to allow the poses to sink instead of "flowing" in and out of them haphazardly and allow the stillness to settle. You know you are embodying the practice if the mind is content and you are connecting to the 'now.'

Yoga is a wonderful invitation to turn inward, and gives us the tools to discover our inner wisdom.

It is way more powerful, infinitely stronger to hold poses, practice with discipline, align yourself and become more aware of how we are moving, rather than thinking "fast" = power or that multiple chaturangas with poor alignment, or moving without awareness equates to a strong practice. It doesn't. And it shows in how we move and how we think we are moving.

Commit to keep growing and learning about yourself... not repeating the same thing over and over and over. As we awaken... we get stronger. When we are stronger, we can hold space for ourselves and others. #NAMASTE

NEW CLASS: YOGA SCULPT
For those looking for a fitness base yoga class with interval training, sculpt with Karen Hyland should be on your to-do list. Hand weights are optional, and you'll get a cardio awakening in this up-tempo class.

SCHEDULING
Thanks to all who filled out the survey sent in recent weeks. The data collected was important in creating future scheduling and programming on the network. By a wide margin, subscribers have indicated that 7am classes are tops, while mid-morning slotting isn't desirable or likely to be attended. And we have seen that in the attendance. Moving forward, we will play with earlier starting times (i.e., 6:30am this week) and steering away from slotting that have not been well attended.

As we get more subscribers and this network grows, we'll revisit adding more classes throughout the day. Please support our teachers by attending everyone's class and know that our efforts to create a functional schedule will be priority, but we also need consistency and the reason we create a schedule is so we can ALL have accountability, a sense of structure and normalcy during these days of volatility.

Our platform has consistently increased our offerings, more than what STUDIOS across NYC are giving. And we have monthly given you loads of opportunities to practice at many time slots. We will continue to do so, and with your continued support, we hope to eventually have more classes and more teachers.

Mindfulness is like a flashlight; shining awareness at all things in your life, including sensations, emotions and thoughts as they develop and fade away in the ever-changing human experience of body and mind.

Mindfulness allows you to see all the things that have contributed to your advancement. When we are mindful, we are aware... and when we are aware we can identify and express gratitude for all our sensations, emotions and thoughts without judgement.

Swami Satchidananda once said, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!" This is balance. And we are grateful for the path we have to find balance and stand proud when we can bask in the glory of balance.

Introducing Yoga Sculpt with Karen H.

Yoga Sculpt with Karen Hyland Online Zoom.us Virtual Classes
In our on-going evolution of the platform, we'll be adding a "Yoga Sculpt" class starting next week with Karen Hyland.

Yoga Sculpt is an all levels vinyasa practice combined with light weights and resistance training.

High intensity cardio bursts to get your blood flowing and invigorated are featured in the class.

Expect to breathe, move, flow, and build strength in this hour long session that leaves no muscle untouched! (Don't worry if you don't have weights -- Plenty of options for those without equipment)


O​ur first YOGA Sculpt class will be Tuesday, December 1st at 12:00 pm.
