"Breathe deeply, until sweet air extinguishes the burn of fear in your lungs and every breath is a beautiful refusal to become anything less than infinite." Want to build heat in your practice? I got'yah!
The practice of yoga, when given true care and awareness can help you build heat and it ignites a rise in heat to the body, invigorates your internal organs, activates muscles and gets your cardiovascular system excited. Step 1: True attention to the Breath: keep the breathing consistent, control your prana (upward rising energy) and apana (outward flow). Are you really focused on your breathing or are you more worried about the posture, aesthetic of the pose and the next pose rather than staying in tune with the inhale and exhale? When we don’t connect with our breathing, the joints and muscles will be rigid and then you cannot align physically on the mat to meet your needs. Step 2: Focus on your alignment: It is imperative for muscular development and advancement into structured poses to practice proper alignment that serves your body's needs. Instead of over-stretching, practicing the same variations without taking note of your spatial positioning and not being self-aware of mechanics, allow the muscles to engage around our skeletal structure and allow your alignment to help you create heat through fitting positioning in poses. Step 3: What are we eating or drinking pre-class, doing pre-class? Select your foods carefully, drink hot drinks, warm foods and avoid inflammatory foods and alcohol. A hot shower or warm bath prior to the practice is also recommended. ** Stay locked-in to your inboxes for hot in-person sessions. We'll expand the schedule in the coming weeks and provide plenty of opportunities to get into the hot-room. This week we welcome Demetra Kentrotas to the schedule. We also get to bask in the glory of a 60-minute session with Josh Mathew-Meier. Make sure to catch Karen Hyland on Friday for some fun energetic and creative flows. Erin Giordano will make sure your total body gets lit on Wednesday night with her inspiring HIIT class. Another week... another teacher added to the roster -- lets welcome Demetra Kentrotas to the squad.
Demetra made herself familiar with the Vicyasa™ community teaching during our outdoor in-person sessions, but now she'll take her teachings in-front of the camera and onto the virtual platform. Get to know Demetra with part-one of her 'Teacher Feature': QUESTION: What is your favorite yoga pose/why? DEMETRA: "Parsvottonasana (pyramid pose) is amazing at any point of class because you can anchor yourself while easing into a forward bend and balance challenge. It's a pose I can stay in for a while and explore new points of sensation every time. My hamstrings need all the love they can get!" Q: What is your least favorite pose right now/why? DEMETRA: "Crow pose and I are frenemies. It feels compressed and I have trouble breathing through it. Popping right up into inversions and arm balances doesn't come naturally, and I admire those who can do it." Q: What lessons from the yoga mat have you applied off your mat? DEMETRA: "Take things one step at a time and stay curious- I have to remind myself about this constantly. Be gentle with yourself during transitional times, on the mat and off." Q: Do you have a guilty pleasure/binged watch anything etc., during quarantine? DEMETRA: "If I'm being honest with myself, I can't live without TV. I binged the entire series of Six Feet Under and wept. I binged the entirety of Big Mouth and belly-laughed." Q: What is your post-class meal craving? DEMETRA: "Trader Joe’s dried mango, I can't get enough." You can follow Demetra on Instagram @D_Meetch. Her debut class will be Sunday February 7 at 1:00pm. What's up, Yogis? Hope your entry into 2021 has been safe and healthy. As we approach our one-year of virtual programming, it's a great pleasure to announce new additions to the team this week. What was one teacher on the platform has turned into a crew of amazing instructors delivering mind/body wellness daily! This 'Teacher Feature' spotlights Sonic Yoga alum and my colleague at Earth Yoga NYC, Babette Godfrey.
Get to know Babette a bit below with part-one of our fun Q&A. You can also follow her on Instagram: @babgod. QUESTION: What is your favorite yoga pose/why? BABETTE: "Sirsasana A! Headstand, without a doubt. It’s incredibly grounding and draws my focus completely to my breath and the present moment; it truly embodies the essence of yoga." Q: What is your least favorite pose right now/why? BABETTE: "Right now that would be Halasana (Plow pose) or Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand). I have been practicing and teaching these two so often lately that I’m starting to develop a spot of callus at the nape of my neck! Which is probably a good thing. :)" Q: What lessons from the yoga mat have you applied off your mat? BABETTE: "That it’s possible to feel uncomfortable or challenged but that I don’t have to be so reactive to it. Patience. Dedication. Releasing expectations." Q: Do you have a guilty pleasure/binged watch anything etc., during quarantine? BABETTE: "The Crown. The Queen’s Gambit. This Is Us." Q: What is your post-class meal craving? BABETTE: "Something truly nourishing. No snacks, I need a real meal haha. Definitely something with carbs!" Check out Babette's debut class on the platform on Sunday January 31, at 1:00 pm! Part 2 of her Q&A... coming soon! "Unity to be real must stand the severest strain without breaking." The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a compilation of verses that serve as a guide to attain wisdom and self-realization through your yogic journey. The word 'sutra' means to 'thread.' And to combine together and unite is to Yoga.
When we practice together, we are in our yoga-state. When we focus, harness our potential, overcome challenges, learn to make better choices, get in tune with our body and mind and how to process information, we scratch the surface of the wisdom of the verses within the Yoga Sutras. As we approach almost a full year practicing virtually, adapting and continuing to integrate ourselves and stay threaded within the community, we have learned how to implement the principles, techniques, and practices to become functional in this evolving world. That is powerful and inspiring... and that is why yoga has survived for thousands of years and will continue moving forward. We will continue to move forward as well and strive in our own glory! Karen Hyland, Josh Mathew-Meier and Erin Giordano are back this week for some yoga flow and interval training! This week we welcome Babette Godefroy to the team, as she'll lead a Sunday afternoon session in our efforts to expand the schedule on weekends. Guess who's back? Dina Ivas and Becca Pace will grace the platform on Saturday and Sunday. Subscribers, stay tuned to changes to our hot in-person sessions in the coming weeks. And don't forget to leave a review on our YELP page (CLICK HERE). We'll pluck another winner for a prize on our platform to those that leave reviews. #Namaste YOGA AT OHHHMMM VIRTUAL SCHEDULE: (HOT IN-PERSON, Outdoor Classes/Events this week for active subscribers only - times and days not indicated on schedule) MONDAY -- 1/25/2021

It is up to each individual as to how deeply she or he is willing to connect to that presence.” Through our yoga, we become aware of our own divinity. NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ “Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.” -- Deborah Day Self-care is defined as "the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health." The consistency we create for ourselves for self-care will go a long way toward determining how happy or unhappy, and how vital or how depleted we are. How we focus our mental energies and choose self-health will impact our wellspring of health. Our essence shines when we connect our heart to our rhythms of day-to-day life and then we make wise choices based on the balance we create through our yoga practice and attention to mind/body wellness.
Practice yoga in everything, get out in nature, appreciate the people around you and let them love you—transcend calm on the mat, be kind and remember to restore the body, and rejuvenate post-class . We are all a lot more special and resilient than we realize. The practice of self-care just illuminates that. This week we have Karen twice, Erin twice and Josh twice. BARRE has been moved to 9am on Monday morning, so you early risers can get the heart-rate up & treat yourself to some low impact and high intensity work to slay the week. Jennifer Oviedo is back to lead us through a sweet 10-minute meditation to cap our Thursday evening session. Remember to leave us a review on YELP and we'll have a contest soon -- leave a review and you can win TWO weeks/Extension of UNLIMITED yoga. In the coming weeks, we'll be adding more weekend classes - a "community" class with rotating teachers.
