"Truth cannot be interpreted – it can only be experienced." - Sadhguru The Yamas [a series of "right living" or ethical rules within Yoga philosophy - "reining in" or "control" - restraints for proper conduct that can be understood as ways in which we interact with the world around us.] Essentially, things we must observe to be good, solid people. There's no surprise that telling the truth makes the list & it is called SATYA; the second of the Yamas. It literally translates to honesty and is about being truthful to the world and to yourself, but without forgetting our other goals of being kind and compassionate that we looked at in Ahimsa [non injury/harm]. Sometimes being truthful is not about what you say, but how you say it & how we live it. In order to check if what we want to express is following Satya, we can ask ourselves these four questions: Is it true? Is it REALLY true? Is it necessary? Is it kind/can you say it in a kind way? In our yoga practice, we must be honest with our students when we are teaching and we must be honest to ourselves as practitioners. We can't let our ego take over and tell us we can do a pose when we can't or shouldn't. In the same way, we can't let fear tell us we can't do something if truthfully we can. These are all things to consider when practicing - decide what is the version of the practice that is truthfully right for you. The benefits of SATYA? Healthier relationships with others and yourself. A clear conscience. Trust in yourself. Inspires others. The benefits of continuously choosing the truth and bringing satya into your yoga practice will benefit so many aspects of your life it will be truly worth it! INTRODUCING... "Comparison is the thief of joy." —Theodore Roosevelt The quote above is very relevant in association with our yoga practice. I'd like to add that "Perfectionism" is also the thief of joy. Neither comparing nor the word perfect have any place in any meditation or yoga practice.
Too often, students feel self-imposed or outwardly pressured to advance in their poses; social media & studio culture, our upbringing, all influence and can sabotage our healthy yoga lifestyle. These pressures can lead to burnout, injury, and competitiveness—which is not the part of the construct of yoga. Nor is that a feature of any ancient scriptures or texts. That mode of practice creates suffering and can stunt our imagination and excitement for the practice as yoga practitioners. Of course, progressing in the practice of asana is beautiful too - but only healthy when that progress includes peace, mindfulness, awareness and inner knowing. This practice is one of joy. It’s meant to teach us to live up to our full potential. Not to be "perfect" or compare yourself to someone else, or to unhealthy standards not fitting your present. It’s a journey that we choose to embark on. Life is already a wild ride... so arrive on your mat this Fall and allow your breath, your practice, and the deep roots of yoga support you to feel more grounded and connected to the beauty that is you. The term literally means purity, cleanliness and clearness. It refers to purity of mind, speech and body.
The habits we pick up throughout life off the mat may or may not serve us, and the idea of our practice is to recognise what doesn’t help us and what does, coming towards a state in which everything we do aids us towards being happier, healthier and more awake and aware in life. If we take our ‘bad’ habits on to the mat with us, then our practice becomes a lot harder, we have to sift through the ‘impurities’ or negativity we’ve picked up before reaping the benefits of Yoga. Impurities we try to shed can be mental & physical. Practicing cleanliness of body, mind, spirit and surroundings will help direct us towards a pure and positive life. Some ways to "cleanse": Neti - nasal cleansing Dhauti - cleansing of digestive tract Nauli - abdominal massage Bhasti - colon cleansing Kappalabhati - breath of fire Our environment can reflect our state of mind. You’ll probably identify with the fact that when our bedrooms or homes are messy, our minds can often feel a little messy and cluttered too. When we’re surrounded by a clean environment however, with clear surfaces, possessions that we need – and not possessions we’ve hoarded over the years and can’t bear to get rid of – and the sense of having space to breathe, then we’re likely to feel a whole lot better and clearer in our minds. Not only does having a clean place to practice in, and a clean mat to practise on feel good, it shows a sign of respect towards our practice. ON-DEMAND OPTIONS GALORE... Finding peace does not necessarily mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace implies to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart.
You know how we try to turn down the volume on some background music when we need to think a lil' more clearly about something complicated or confusing that we need to focus more on? The same is true for your life. What's the noise you need to cut out to concentrate? That’s the noise in your head – the busy, worried thoughts, plans, emotional or mental clinging screaming over your better judgment. Turning down the "noise" refocuses your mind and offers you clarity when you need it most. You don’t really think about how or why this makes such a huge difference, you just know that it does. How do we apply the strategy to address all the other noise in your life, starting with the noise in your head? Some people have affirmations, or mantras, or convictions, but in any case these daily reminders keep you on track by keeping peaceful, productive thoughts at the top of your mind, even when life gets noisy. Either at the start of the day, at the onset of your practice or regularly throughout the day, turn down the noise by tuning into your heart. ON-DEMAND OPTIONS GALORE... NEW CLASSES Over the next few weeks, you'll see an update into many of the offerings we have available 24/7 for our unlimited subscribers. We'll be adding shorter "quickie" yoga classes for those on the go. The length of these vinyasa sessions? Twenty minutes, a half hour... and not just Yoga, but some "workout" low impact core classes very similar to mat pilates and some more foundational work as well. Foundation/alignment type videos and tutorials where we focus on a pose or two to work on and warm up flows for such poses. ON-DEMAND JUST GOT BETTER! LULULEMON GIVEAWAYS...
