QUESTION: What are challenging poses for you? What pose are you looking to advance in? TANYA: "Still working on my handstands. Some days I can hold it over a minute! Other days, only a few seconds. It’s frustrating! But after a pilates mat workout with the focus on core and alignment, my handstands are bomb!" Q: How would you describe your classes? TANYA: "Challenging, Fun, Quirky, cool." Q: What have you missed the most from quarantine lockdown? TANYA: "I’m a very hands-on teacher, so the kinesthetic aspect is definitely what I miss the most…along with the social aspect." Q: Have you picked up hobbies/interests during lockdown? TANYA: "I got a spin bike and joined Peloton. I’m obsessed. Started running again. As a big traveler and hiker, I’ve been exploring more local destinations and finding there is a lot to do only a stone’s throw away. I also am a high school dance educator teaching remotely, so I am somehow inspired and choreographing a lot. More reading of mystery thrillers too!" Q: Do you like working out at night, or during the day? Time you like to practice? TANYA: "I like to start to start the day with a good workout to get me energized, but not too early! Victor knows that, LOL. Other days, I sleep in and do it in the afternoons. Most evenings, I just want to unwind and chill." Q: Standing one-legged poses or arm balances? Why? TANYA: "I like both, but I guess overall I’d have to say arm balances. They allow me to use my upper body more and give my ankles a break. I’ve sprained both of them multiple times, so sometimes I grip them in standing one-leg balancing poses." MAT PILATES A strengthening and lengthening form of exercise that focuses on your abdominal muscles while also training your arms and legs. In this class, you hold movements like planks, side planks, and core exercises to build your muscles and core strength. Much of the equipment that you find in a reformer class can also be used in a pilates mat workout. Your instructor will give you options to use bands, exercise balls, and sometimes even small weights to help level-up your pilates experience. Tanya is an expert in giving you modifications and what things you can use around the home to replace the props commonly used to accentuate the poses and aide your form for proper engagement of muscles being targeted. With pilates, micro-adjusting your movements could be the difference between targeting the right muscles and injury. Our instructors will be there to help you find ways to modify each exercise to fit your needs, whether you’re new to the practice or have been practicing pilates for years. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) In this training technique, you give all-out effort through quick, intense bursts of exercises, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. Many poses or intervals will be in familiar yoga-like poses where there's addition to cardio and repetitive active range of motion exercises to help you build heat and strengthen and tone up your muscles. BARRE Barre is a style of exercise inspired by ballet, but also shares similarities with Yoga and Pilates. During the session, the instructor guides students strength and endurance exercises using your own body weight and light hand weights. -- sometimes involving high-impact moves. Barre uses small, targeted movements to improve strength, muscle tone, and flexibility. This makes injuries less likely than when you’re doing other activities, such as weight training or cardio exercises, like running. Hand held weights are optional. SCULPT Sculpt is a muscular building class that targets physical endurance. The use of free weights, resistance bands, medicine & physio balls, and your own body weight to strengthen all major muscle groups is the design of the class. The focus is adding definition to your physique with higher reps and lower weight. These sculpt and tone workouts help improve your circulation, metabolism and caloric burn, further enhancing the shape and definition of your muscles. Q: What is your least favorite pose right now/why? TANYA: "Plow pose. I feel very closed off and restricted. I think it's especially uncomfortable now because of the chaos in the world and my need to be open and free. But honestly, isn’t that the point of yoga? We must face what makes us uncomfortable." Q: What lessons from the yoga mat have you applied off your mat? TANYA: "Breathe through the difficult times. We can learn a lot about ourselves from the most challenging moments. Nothing is permanent. That which challenges us can only make us stronger." Q: Do you have a guilty pleasure/binged watch anything etc., during quarantine? TANYA: "Red wine, coffee, thrillers on Netflix…and rather than eating too much, forgetting to eat because I’m always working out or teaching!" Q: What is your post-class meal craving? As promised; more teachers, more classes, more fun! We will feature this week some Pilates and Fitness/Sculpting action with our new teachers: Tanya Mgrdechian and Erin Giordano! Karen Hyland will be on the schedule twice and we will have four straight days of meditation at noon! Take the challenge -- give yourself a "time-out" and reset midday with breathing work and guided meditations. I am so honored you all entrusted me and allowed this platform to be your mind/body needs since March, 2020. We've grown as a community and have adapted to keep order in our life, and continue the sweaty work on the mat in our sacred spaces.
