We are content." — Birgitte Kristen Many of my teachers speak about cultivating the qualities that nurture us. There are infinite qualities that exist within us—such as courageousness, empathy, creativity, anger, hurt, pain, excitement, jealousy, hope, peace, understanding—and each one may arise throughout the day.
Which qualities can you cultivate to find peace in our lives this holiday season; the qualities that allow us to be present and fully engaged in the moment. Cultivating, focusing on, to read about, to listen to, to observe, to foster those qualities of appreciation, gratitude, understanding, and compassion within us, allows our mind to be at peace. I am grateful to be teaching. I am grateful for all that Yoga has taught me, and is teaching me moment to moment. As a teacher, I'm always yearning for wisdom in order to articulate and be clear in conveying this tangible, yet not so tangible thing called yoga. As a person, we are always striving to be happy, to be content with who we are as a person. I am grateful for who I have become as a person. I have work to do—I am still working on relationships with others—but, so far, I like me. Many blessings to the yoga community. May we all grow together. DINA IS BACK... “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Introspection, self-study, also known as Svadhyaya, is a foundational practice of yoga. One of the most powerful things you can do is to know yourself -- to deeply reflect on your true essence and harness its power.
We all self-study when we practice asana (poses); we identify how we move our bodies in space, we adjust and react to our movements and breathing and create order through our ability to study - not judge. And being able to enhance our asana practice and develop a healthy condition into our body is to move with complete understanding which is achieved through study. You need a commitment.” Tapas [one of the Niyamas] comes from the Sanskrit word “Tap” or to burn, and is defined as discipline, or purity. Another study or interpretation is the “burning off” of any obstructions (from what's not needed in the body or hindering thoughts and patterns in our minds) which can stand in the way of our true self, our Yoga or union with the divine.
The practice of Tapas must be sustainable; with a dedicated practice and a commitment to showing up. A decision to practice with complete dedication may be a great way to ignite your inner fire, but unless one has the commitment to oneself, about what we put into our bodies each day, and how we feed our minds, that fire will burn out as quickly as it started. True lasting change happens slowly – a fire must be tended mindfully so that it can continue to burn without becoming too intense. IN-PERSON THIS WEEK New York Yoga is one of Vicyasa's spaces for HOT in-person action. Wednesday's at 4:30 pm and Saturday's at 11:00 am (75 minute flow) are weekly. We have a few 9:30 am this week for those wanting an early power flow. LL Studio (formerly Laughing Lotus) will host my 6:00 pm Friday one hour weekly vinyasa classes. The stress of day-to-day life combined with the bumps on the road of life can cause mental anguish. What we must not sacrifice or compromise is our ability to exercise regularly, practice yoga, meditate and find a sense of community by taking live classes online, regardless of how busy our schedules may get or any other obstacles that may prevent us from sticking to our mental and physical health.
