“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” Mindfulness is like a flashlight; shining awareness at all things in your life, including sensations, emotions and thoughts as they develop and fade away in the ever-changing human experience of body and mind.
Mindfulness allows you to see all the things that have contributed to your advancement. When we are mindful, we are aware... and when we are aware we can identify and express gratitude for all our sensations, emotions and thoughts without judgement. Swami Satchidananda once said, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf!" This is balance. And we are grateful for the path we have to find balance and stand proud when we can bask in the glory of balance. THIS WEEK... Subscribers get first dibs on HOT In-Person sessions. Thank you to everyone who has participated in these fun events and have followed the strict policies and regulations to keep these offerings safe and on-going. In our on-going evolution of the platform, we'll be adding a "Yoga Sculpt" class starting next week with Karen Hyland.
Yoga Sculpt is an all levels vinyasa practice combined with light weights and resistance training. High intensity cardio bursts to get your blood flowing and invigorated are featured in the class. Expect to breathe, move, flow, and build strength in this hour long session that leaves no muscle untouched! (Don't worry if you don't have weights -- Plenty of options for those without equipment) Our first YOGA Sculpt class will be Tuesday, December 1st at 12:00 pm. Josh Mathew-Meier is back this week for TWO hour long yoga sessions on our fast-growing platform. In part two of this 'Teacher Feature' we learn a lil' more about Josh... check it out below: QUESTION: What are challenging poses for you? What pose are you looking to advance in?
JOSH: "Handstand is my favorite challenge, and I'm absolutely looking to advance my ability to sustain it." Q: How would you describe your classes? JOSH: "My classes are designed to create a space where students find the accessibility to face both the physical and mental challenges presented in a movement-based practice, while simultaneously providing opportunity to find calm and grace in the moment where it's hardest to discover." Q: What have you missed the most from quarantine lockdown? JOSH: "IN-PERSON TEACHING. I've found teaching to a screen is so difficult in that the shared energy of the moment is hard to access. That, and movie theatres. I really miss the movies." Q: Have you picked up hobbies/interests during lockdown? JOSH: "I am learning Spanish via an app! I've also been doing a lot more reading than previously, and am on-track to complete 30 books for the 2020 calendar year." Q: Do you like working out at night, or during the day? Time you like to practice? JOSH: "I find personally that I'm better served by getting physical in the morning hours. I'm usually on my bike for no less than 30/no more than 75 minutes every day by 8:30a, to be followed by a strength-training workout or an hour of asana (alternated daily) every day except Saturday - that's my always rest day, my sacred day of nothingness." Q: Standing one-legged poses or arm balances? Why? JOSH: "BOTH! Although, admittedly, balance is notoriously tough for me because of my genetic hindrance of flat feet. They both are exceedingly challenging in how they require the body to work, but even moreso, in the presence of mind required to not only execute but sustain the experience." Follow Josh on INSTAGRAM: (@yoga_jamm) and check out his web site HERE! For part-one of his interview, click HERE! “Thankfulness creates gratitude which generates contentment that causes peace.” We celebrate gratitude everytime we step onto the mat -- we revel in life! Thanksgiving is a great day to acknowledge and be grateful, but embodying everyday the attitude of gratitude is the work of a yogi.
Through all the madness that has been 2020, we have the power of community and the development and cultivation of our practice. I'm grateful for having all of you in my life. I am grateful that Dina, Karen, Tanya, Erin & Josh are a strong support team. I'm grateful that we all have found glimpses of hope and have been unwavering in our determination to get through the volatility of this year with pride and poise. On this Thanksgiving... let's give thanks to what we have today, not look back at what was once. The calm that is our Yoga will reflect who we are beyond the anger, fear or grief. Many blessings to the yoga community. May we all grow together! THANKSGIVING We are taking a "day off" to disconnect and reconnect on Thursday. We hope you understand & honor the importance of that and we'll see you the next day with some post-holiday fun action! BARRE & SCULPT CLASSES No props are mandatory for these classes! Join in on the sweaty fun and complement your yoga practice by working different muscle groups in a varying way to tone, lengthen and strengthen your entire body. Our instructors for these disciplines are highly motivating and skillful at making these workouts fun, precise & safe for all! Beginners are welcome! REFERRALS Refer someone and you'll get a $5 discount on your next class package. Contact Victor for details and to apply the discount. This discount is also honored if you refer someone that signs-up with a 5-class pack, 10-class pack, 2-week unlimited or monthly access. HOT & IN-PERSON SESSIONS Subscribers get first dibs on these sessions. With unseasonably warm days, we'll be doing pop-up classes in LIC and Astoria. HOT Sessions have been a success, fun and incredibly satisfying. Strict protocols are taken to keep everyone safe. An inability to follow our guidelines will lead to a termination of invites to these sessions. YELP REVIEWS! Big shout-out to everyone who has left a review on our page on Yelp... click here! Some reviews have been shaded into a 'not recommended' section [click here] for no apparent reason (maybe they hatin' on all the 5-star ratings, HA)... as we say in the 'hood, "That's that bullshhh... ." LOL. As a thank you, I'll do a random drawing -- subscribers who leave reviews get automatically entered -- to win a week extension or free week of unlimited yoga. SPAM FOLDER Class access links are automated and sent 20-minutes before the start of each session. Ample time to show up, set-up and potentially troubleshoot any issues. If you don't receive the link and have an active account, please check your spam folder first to ensure they are not being stored/directed there. Yahoo.com and other non Gmail from time to time will snatch those emails and take 'em into the spam inbox. You can always email Victor if class links are received, but please don't wait till the last second to do so... again, mindfulness! VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- [email protected] The team thanks you all for the support! NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ Erin Giordano is back this week for two classes; Wednesday at 6pm & Saturday morning at 9am. Her classes are sweat-inducing, work the entire body and her enthusiastic and energetic personality keeps you inspired throughout the 45-minute session!
FYI: Beginners to HIIT or any fitness classes are welcome! PROPS are not required, but hand weights and objects like blocks can be used to intensify, align and keep you working! Get to know Erin with part two of her 'Teacher Feature'... QUESTION: What are challenging poses for you? What pose are you looking to advance in? ERIN: "Probably would have to say Side Crow right now. I can get in it, but I find it super challenging to maintain for more than a couple of breaths." Q: How would you describe your classes? ERIN: "Challenging, but very inclusive. My goal is to make people sweat, feel the burn, and work hard, but also walk away feeling supported, energized, and accomplished!" Q: What have you missed the most from quarantine lockdown? ERIN: "I think what I've missed the most during quarantine is twofold: being in rehearsals with my dance company, having that physical human connection, and preparing for performances; and teaching fitness classes in real time with clients who made that hour a priority of their day, where we get to feed off the positive energy and hard work in the room (thank goodness for the online community!!!)" Q: Have you picked up hobbies/interests during lockdown? ERIN: "Oh my gosh, is it sad that cleaning has been a consistent 'interest' of mine during quarantine? Haha but for real, some new hobbies have been cooking, biking around New York, and dabbling in sudoku puzzles." Q: Do you like working out at night, or during the day? Time you like to practice? ERIN: "I love starting the day out with a solid workout! I'm not typically an 'early morning person' but I find that I feel so much more energized, grounded, and ready to tackle the day afterwards. An evening yoga practice can be such an awesome way to unwind at the end of the day. I love breathing deeply and stretching it out before bed." Q: Standing one-legged poses or arm balances? Why? ERIN: "LOVE standing one-legged poses - reminiscent of my dancing days! Also requires a lot of abdominal engagement and support to maintain balance on one leg, which is something I appreciate." Follow Erin on Instagram at @eringio and if you want to read part-one of the interview, click HERE! Love and light, Victor C. “It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.” Adaptation. Change. We have embraced it at Yoga with Victor. It started with all you powerful yogis who have steadily embraced transformation and have practiced on and beyond their mat non-attachment; from coping, to living and now... striving since March. Ups and downs. Laughter and crying. The highs in emotions and the lows of gloom. We've learned that 'non-attachment' [Aparigraha] is vital to moving forward; enlightening us to take only what we need, keep only what serves us in the moment, and to let go when the time is right. There are loads of NEW on our platform and embracing change has led us to add more great teachers, diversifying the schedule and creating more paths for you to let go of the old, and take on the new world. This week we welcome the uplifting Josh Mathew-Meier. We get back to grinding & strengthening with Tanya Mgrdechian. Flow forward with the steady & inspiring presence of Karen Hyland. Get invigorated and empowered with Erin Giordano. And learn about our infinite potential with Dina Ivas. Guess what? We have another teacher coming soon!

VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- [email protected] The team thanks you all for the support! NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ In our efforts to make this the best platform for all your mind/body needs, we are proud to announce the addition of Josh Mathew-Meier (Instagram: @yoga_jamm) to the squad.
A long time colleague, Josh's unquestioned work ethic, dedication to being a perpetual student and skillful approach to instructing elevates the platform and fortifies the team of teachers. At a young age, Josh always had an interest in movement as a form of expression. He went on to get his BFA in Musical Theatre and when he arrived in NYC in 2005, he started his yoga journey. His classes "[create] a safe, healthy environment for the exploration and play of dynamic asana... weaving the depths of ancient philosophy with the demands of modern life, allowing for a yogic approach to any situation the every day might present." Let's get to know Josh in this week's 'Teacher Feature' QUESTION: What is your favorite yoga pose/why? JOSH: "My favorite yoga pose is headstand, mostly just because I love being inverted, but also because of the strength and focus required in finding a moment of quietude when my entire world is literally flipped upside down." Q: What is your least favorite pose right now/why? JOSH: "I find it hard to qualify a "least" favorite because I'm always seeking how to challenge myself to not judge the moment, but rather live in the pose with a sense of how it serves me, and in turn, how I serve it. With all that said, I rarely practice shoulder-stand outside of an Iyengar practice." Q: What lessons from the yoga mat have you applied off your mat? JOSH: "Ahimsa (non-violence) and Samtosha (contentment) I find to be the most applicable, in that I try and see every person as a reflection of myself, and that this moment is all I've got. Being kind to everyone I come in contact with and every experience I'm presented helps me find grace in my movements through the world." Q: Do you have a guilty pleasure/binged watch anything etc., during quarantine? JOSH: "I took a week in March and watched the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe chronologically from the first Iron Man to Avengers: Endgame. I also can sit down with Bob's Burgers and Schitt's Creek for hours on end." Q: What is your post-class meal craving? JOSH: "I keep a pretty structured diet, and generally coming out of class I want something light and nutritious. My always-craving is chocolate, in any form it's presented. I can't get enough!!" Check out Josh's debut class on our platform Tuesday November 17, 2020 at 4:30pm. WE ARE ON YELP! The team at Yoga with Victor would love it if you can drop a review on Yelp. To those that have already left a review... THANK YOU! And yes, if you are subscribed and left a review, we'll do a live drawing to win/add an extra week onto your membership. PAYMENT: VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- [email protected] The team thanks you all for the support! NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ SHE'S BACKKKKKKK! Tanya Mgrdechian will be on the schedule Monday November 16th leading her bad-ass mat Pilates class. Today, we catch up with Tanya in the second installment of her 'Teacher Feature' Q&A. Get to know Tanya below:
QUESTION: What are challenging poses for you? What pose are you looking to advance in? TANYA: "Still working on my handstands. Some days I can hold it over a minute! Other days, only a few seconds. It’s frustrating! But after a pilates mat workout with the focus on core and alignment, my handstands are bomb!" Q: How would you describe your classes? TANYA: "Challenging, Fun, Quirky, cool." Q: What have you missed the most from quarantine lockdown? TANYA: "I’m a very hands-on teacher, so the kinesthetic aspect is definitely what I miss the most…along with the social aspect." Q: Have you picked up hobbies/interests during lockdown? TANYA: "I got a spin bike and joined Peloton. I’m obsessed. Started running again. As a big traveler and hiker, I’ve been exploring more local destinations and finding there is a lot to do only a stone’s throw away. I also am a high school dance educator teaching remotely, so I am somehow inspired and choreographing a lot. More reading of mystery thrillers too!" Q: Do you like working out at night, or during the day? Time you like to practice? TANYA: "I like to start to start the day with a good workout to get me energized, but not too early! Victor knows that, LOL. Other days, I sleep in and do it in the afternoons. Most evenings, I just want to unwind and chill." Q: Standing one-legged poses or arm balances? Why? TANYA: "I like both, but I guess overall I’d have to say arm balances. They allow me to use my upper body more and give my ankles a break. I’ve sprained both of them multiple times, so sometimes I grip them in standing one-leg balancing poses." Follow Tanya on Instagram @Tanyadancer and catch her and the other amazing instructors we have on the www.YogaWithVictor.com mind/body platform. “We don't heal in isolation, but in community.” The power of community to uplift & foster connection is something I've been proud of that has developed since March... the feelings of encouragement and camaraderie is palpable beyond our virtual walls. And with more teachers in the mix and varying voices now on the platform, the interrelatedness will only grow stronger... all due to the bond we have of mind/body wellness.
From Dina, Karen, Erin, Tanya and myself -- THANK YOU! HOT SESSIONS We'll continue the hot room in-person schedule this week and take our practice back into a fiery space -- a setting many of us have longed for awhile. Registration for these sessions are only available at a discounted rate to members who have a monthly unlimited or 10-class pack. MORE TEACHER ADDITIONS? Yup... it's coming together. STAY TUNED! We're already the most reliable, most structured and user-friendly service around. The community is lit already... and we'll make it better! MEDITATION THIS WEEK... NEW TEACHER: Lets welcome Jennifer Oviedo to the crew! Our new meditation teacher is a dedicated practitioner of exploration beyond the poses. Jennifer will lead a 10-minute meditation at 7:40am on Wednesday before our yoga session in an effort to ground us and facilitate clarity prior to our movement practice at 8:00am. Access emails for 8:00am yoga will be sent at 7:25am, enough time for you to log-in & prepare for meditation which will begin promptly. SPECIAL SHOUT-OUT: Yoga Digest Magazine... They highlighted our platform on their social media Instagram page and stated simply... "Inspire, Elevate, Uplift." I couldn't agree more! WE ARE ON YELP! All professional and shhh... yup! It would mean the world to me if you leave a review for the team at www.YogaWithVictor.com on Yelp. To those that have already left a review... as we say in Spanish, "Gracias!" In-person enrollment only for members with active subscriptions. Spots are limited. CONTEST: We will give away another private session with Victor C.
