YOGA STUDIO ETIQUETTE (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) In every part of life, there’s a degree of etiquette that must be upheld. No, it’s not about going to finishing school or using the right dessert fork. Etiquette in its most basic sense is about treating people, places, and things with their due respect. That leads us to the discussion of yoga studio etiquette: what is it and why does it matter?
Every yoga studio has its own set of policies about what constitutes good etiquette, but there are a general set of principles that typically apply to most. These often include:
Some studios have hard no cell phone policies while others are sticklers about removing your shoes before entering the space. If you’re unclear as to what the rules are, it’s always a good idea to ask the studio manager and/or check the website ahead of time. Why Yoga Studio Etiquette Matters Generally speaking, rules aren’t there just to make your life more difficult. In fact, it’s often quite the opposite. The goal of having parameters within a yoga studio is to provide a safe and inclusive space in which all individuals can practice yoga and have an enjoyable experience. The rules aren’t meant to be restrictive. Rather, they’re there to allow students to disconnect from the constant rigors of daily life and just be in a yogic state. While some may find it irksome that they can’t have their phones in the room or that they must store their belongings in lockers, the reality is that it’s much more annoying to hear a cell phone ring in the middle of savasana. So for everyone’s sake, yours included, know that yoga studio etiquette does, in fact, matter. Its purpose is to allow for a better experience for all yogis. To that, we say namaste. ABOUT FINDING CONNECTIONS (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) In yoga, the word “sutra” translates to thread. Some might consider a thread a connection that binds one element of life to another. When we talk about sutras and connections in general, this opens up a discussion about what they are, how to find them, and what they mean for our everyday lives.
There are many ways to find connections: in person, online, at work, in specific communities (i.e., yoga studios, gyms, etc.). There are different forms of connection as well, including close friendships, passing glances, and acquaintances. A connection can be whatever you need it to be. Some connections are deeper than others. Some are full-on conversations and catch ups while others are knowing glances or shared smirks. Sometimes a connection isn’t even acknowledged; it’s just known. At times, you don’t even have to make eye contact to foster a connection. As long as you’re there in body, mind, or intention, there’s a connection happening. And at the end of the day, we are all connected because we are all on this earth, which means we are all connected to the universe In yoga’s physical asana practice, connections are often expressed in the form of binds. And just like in the real world, there are many ways to find connections or binds here as well:
Both of these are powerful ways to form connections to your own body and bring yourself into consciousness within the yoga room. Consider your connections. How do you find connections and form connections with the people in your life? How do you strengthen them? How do these connections serve you? PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) The concept of sustainability in yoga is nothing new. Many people automatically link the two and think that if you’re a yogi, you must be interested in eco-friendly living and the like. While environmentally consciousness is something we could all strive to be better at, sustainability is about more than recycling and using a compost bin.
Sustainability is about living, being, and practicing for the long haul. It’s about thinking beyond today or tomorrow and asking yourself, “What can I do that will allow me to continue this lifestyle long past the foreseeable future?” This comes down to one of the Yamas of yoga, Ahimsa. Translating to “non-harming,” ahimsa teaches us to live in a way that minimizes harm to all things and beings. This includes the planet, animals, the environment, those around you, and yourself. How can you bring ahimsa into your yoga practice in a way that promotes sustainability? How can you weave this concept into your asana practice and blend it into the mental, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional components of yoga as well? Here are a few suggestions:

Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Here’s the scenario: you’ve signed up for a yoga class and you’re all amped to flow. You’ve set your mat down, your water bottle is nice and ice-cold, and your body is ready to get moving. The class gets off to a fine start, and while the teacher is kind, informative, and knowledgeable, the class just isn’t…enough. So you start adding an extra chaturanga here, a handstand kickup there, and all of a sudden you’re kind of doing your own thing. Yes, you’re getting what you need out of the class but it’s no longer the class that was offered; instead, it’s your interpretation of it. Is that okay?
There are varying schools of thought about the “take what you need” / “make it your own” approach to yoga. Some teachers openly encourage students to modify (i.e., add or subtract) according to their needs. Others may not explicitly say it but may make it known that advanced variations are welcome within reason. It could take time to build up a level of familiarity with an instructor to where you feel you can advance comfortably and safely. Others still may prefer that students adhere to the class format as it is offered without much deviation. So what’s a yogi to do? There’s no hard and fast answer to this one. It’s a case-by-case basis as to how you can do you without disrespecting the teacher, the rest of the students, and the studio space in general. If you’re looking for ways to amplify your practice without being an a**hole, here are some tips:
