“Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” – Ada Louise Huxtable The summer solstice has been celebrated by festivals/rituals and it has become customary in yoga classes to perform sun salutation type sequences at this time of the year.
Gestures of honoring and paying reverence to the natural world are part of a yoga practice that encourages us to appreciate and feel more connected to the rhythms of life. In a world of uncertainty, a feeling of connection to the changing seasons can bring great comfort. The Sun is a force essential to all life on earth. In one way or another, every living being is dependent on the Sun for life. Consider your breathing; your breath nourishes you as the Sun nourishes the trees, who are vital to our exchange of life, creating the air you breathe. If you consider food, you’ll find the same is true, as the Sun nourishes the plants that make up most (if not all) of the human diet. The Sun is important in many other ways as well, serving as the basis for time itself (days, years, calendars), as well as dictating the role of the seasons, growing cycles, and climates we find ourselves in. But why 108 sun salutes? This is one of the key astrological moments of the year. This sacred number is vital... we have 108 nadis (energy channels in the body) that merge in the heart chakra, there are 9 traditional planets and 12 zodiac signs. 9 x 12 = 108, the Matrika Malini (Sanskrit alphabet) has 54 letters, each with a masculine and feminine vibration. 54 + 54 = 108, traditional malas (meditation beads) have 108 beads, there are 108 names for god in yoga. So if 108 sun salutes are out of reach, you can also simply practice 9 salutations. There are 12 postures in a sun salute, and 9 x 12 = 108. On Saturday, March 7th, I'll be hosting a vinyasa foundations workshop at Anthea Yoga & Healing Arts Center. Downward-facing dog, plank, chaturanga, upward-facing dog and downward-facing dog... known as a vinyasa. An integral part of most flow classes, used to warm up, press the reset button of the mind and body, while flowing between sequences. Have you ever been unsure of what you were supposed to be feeling, or why your wrists, shoulders or back ache? This workshop will break down each of the four main poses – downdog, plank, chaturanga, and updog – and its transitions. Learning modifications to stay off achy wrists and shoulders, and which muscles are vital to strengthen and open to perform the vinyasa safely and effectively will be the aim of the workshop. All levels are welcomed. If you pre-register, the fee will be $20.00. The day of the workshop, $25.00. Day: Saturday March 7th. Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Address: 34-01 45th street, Astoria NY 11101. See you soon, Vic A morning practice… That's something that I truly need to develop more of. Many of us avoid it like the plague. Just when we made plans to wake-up early and meditate or practice asana, the alarm goes off … and we hit the snooze button. Maybe we stay up late and that will be our excuse the next morning. Here's another one… we wash our mat, so it's too wet or put it somewhere we can't find to avoid going to a studio for practice. Excuses, excuses. So what do you?
Makes your morning more efficient and you'll be primed to get going.
LOL… seriously, give yourself time to marinate. Yeah… marinate. To enjoy your morning, savor your departure from bed and allow your body to get acclimated to a new day instead of rushing out.
Yes… they'll get you up really early whether you want to or not.
You don't have to go to your local studio to get your meditation or asana practice in. Roll out a mat in the living room or any available space in your home and a few sun salutations later, you got yourself an effective morning routine.
Energizing poses; cat-cow to warm up the spine, sun salutations to build heat, back-bends to invigorate and finish with savasana to collect yourself and cultivate awareness for the day. |
