“The is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature – the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter." – Rachel Carson Spring ... the season of warmth and fertility, growth and abundance, and a real sense of "new beginnings", which makes it a great place to start cultivating a change to your seasonal rhythms. Below, you’ll find some key practices to help you connect more to Spring, which could make a real difference to how you feel in body and mind. YOGA POSES Whilst Winter is the perfect time for deep yin and restorative yoga, Spring is the time to bring in a little more movement and flow. If you feel as though you curled up and spent much of Winter in a hunched and rounded positions, this is a great time to reintroduce heart-opening backbends and postures that open the chest and lungs PRANAYAMA Kapalabhati breath (fire breath) is a great way to cleanse the sinus passages, as well as giving a boost of energy and clarity. Any type of deep, diaphragmatic breathing you’re able to practice will go a long way to boosting energy levels, brightening your mood, and encouraging more oxygen saturation in the muscles and organs. CLEANSING Spring cleaning isn’t just for the house. Although it’s always a good idea to clear stagnant energy and make space for new by taking a trip to the goodwill. We can clean our spaces and create a cleanse for our bodies. Open your windows and cleanse your house by smudging with sage or palo santo. Smudging is a common practice to purify energy of a space, or even yourself. Create a gentle juice cleanse for your body or even a fast. Fasting and cleansing have numerous health as well as spiritual benefits, including: reducing inflammation, better blood sugar control, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, boosts brain function, extending longevity to name a few. Of course, listen to your body and consult a professional before engaging in any fast or cleanse. Spring is an opportunity for renewal and rebirth—for planting seeds to nurture, and to witness the unending cycle of growth and change. It is also a reminder that we cannot be born again until we experience a sort of death—a shedding of old layers, habits, and outmoded beliefs. When we recognize that each waking moment is an opportunity to be born again, it is here, in the now, that we can experience the sheer joy of present moment awareness. LAST CALL... THE VALUE OF SANSKRIT (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Namaste. Asana. Dristi. Chakra. These beautiful words are derived from Sanskrit, one of the oldest ancient languages in documented history. Sanskrit is an Indo-European language, with roots dating back to the Ancient Greek times of c.750-400 BCE. Only a few areas of India still use Sanskrit as their main language; instead, it’s primarily used in Hindu religious texts, Budhhist hymns, and yoga classes. As a yoga practitioner, you’ve probably heard several Sanskrit phrases, either in classes or just around the yoga community. You may not have known what the words meant initially, but with time and repeated exposure it’s likely that you’ve become accustomed to one or two words - maybe you speak a little Sanskrit yourself! Only about 14,000 people worldwide still use Sanskrit as their primary means of communication, which poses the question as to why we use it in yoga. Sanskrit is a great way to connect back to the original lineage of yoga and pay homage to the practice’s most authentic tenets. In a way, it’s a form of going back to the origins and keeping things classic. Sanskrit is also good for clearing up confusion. Some English “translations” of poses yield different interpretations. For example, some people may call one pose “fallen triangle” while others may call it “fallen warrior,” but in Sanskrit, that same pose is simply called Patita Tarasana. Now that begs the question: if a teacher doesn’t use Sanskrit, does that make them any less qualified? No. Sanskrit is good, but in the West it’s not absolutely necessary in every class. Most teachers interweave it with the English translation of poses as a way to infuse the modern practice with the ancient. It’s up to the teacher, the studio, and the students as to how much Sanskrit is incorporated. Some students will respond better to it than others. QUESTION: What are challenging poses for you? What pose are you looking to advance in? LUNA: Surprisingly backbends have always been challenging for me. But the pose I'd like to truly master is the handstand. QUESTION: How would you describe your classes? LUNA: My classes are weird, playful and grounding! You can expect powerful flows combined by mindful contemplations and grounding experiences, as well as somatic release, working the body, mind, soul and spirit. On vinyasa I love giving space for people to play and have fun (arm balances, handstands) and tons of pranayama. On Yin yoga classes, meditation, restorative or sound baths, my goal is to help you release, reflect, quiet the mind and heal. QUESTION: Do you like working out at night, or during the day? Time you like to practice? LUNA: I don’t like early mornings, you will see me rarely working out at that time. I feel the most alive and energetic from 11-6pm, so usually that’s the time I practice power vinyasa or other modalities of strength training, cardio or martial arts. QUESTION: Standing one-legged poses or arm balances? Why? LUNA: I don’t even need to think about it too much to answer this question. (Laughing) Although I appreciate a full rounded practice and I learn to appreciate so many different layers of yoga, I absolutely looooove arm balances. I can safely admit they were the reason that I got into yoga in the first place. And that’s the reason you see me teaching them so much and giving plenty of opportunities for my students to play. Arm balances make me feel like a kid again. I was never a flexible person, but I have always been strong, so arm balances were my doorway to yoga. As my practice evolved I started to appreciate so many other aspects of yoga, meditation, stillness, etc. But I still love the surprise look at someone’s face when they realize how strong a woman can actually be! QUESTION: What are you looking forward to on our "The Wild Heart" Retreat? LUNA: Every single thing!! (laughs) The Wild Heart Retreat will be special!! I’m excited about every single thing we are planning, from the crafted yoga classes and workshops, to the mayan jungle, pyramid, cenotes, hikes and experiences. Plus the incredible community that is joining us!! Looking forward to connecting with like-minded people, the stunning beaches, the Mexican sun, the blue water, the daily yoga classes, meditation, journaling and breathwork. The Retreat is a true opportunity to reset, reconnect and set new goals, release, re-start, re-center. Yoga retreats have always been a true healing experience for me! We don’t ask the teachers to fit a certain box, every single one of us is so different and yet we have so much to offer. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE DISAPPOINTED IN YOUR YOGA PRACTICE (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. We’re told not to get too caught up in the physical aspect of yoga, to let the “performance aspect” of it hold too much weight, but it happens to all of us. After all, who doesn’t want to do well in class? Simply put, it sucks to not feel like you didn’t have a good yoga practice. The reasons could stem from so many things. Maybe you were tired, drained, weren’t feeling energetic, or just felt really distracted. Perhaps you were dealing with a physical ailment that’s hindering your practice. Or maybe you just had a random off day. That happens, too. Whether or not you can pinpoint a reason, feeling like you had a less than stellar practice is a real bummer. So what do you do about it? First, have compassion for yourself. You are human and you can’t expect 100%, 100% of the time. That’s simply not possible. Acknowledging the reality of that is step one. Second, recognize that your practice is dynamic. That means it’s supposed to ebb and flow. It can’t be exceptional every time. Sometimes it will be fantastic, but in order for that to happen it needs to be less than exceptional at other times. After all, you wouldn’t appreciate the highs without experiencing a few lows along the way. Third, remember that yoga is not a competition. There are times when it may feel competitive, especially in the era of social media and yogi-influencers on Instagram. Try to remember that the “effortless” clips you see are just a snapshot in time. They’re often the result of hundreds of takes and don’t reflect the whole picture. Even if you consider yoga to be just a competition against yourself, that is still something worth challenging. Comparing your practice today to what you did yesterday or what you will do tomorrow will not serve you in the present. Take the pressure off and remember that performance has no place in yoga. Finally, know that the real yoga comes with taking the bad with the good. Yoga is not just a physical practice. The real yoga happens when you can accept the ever-evolving nature of your practice. QUESTION: What is your favorite yoga pose/why? LUNA: “Savasana. Do I really need to explain myself? (laughing emoji) Savasana or corpse pose according to yoga traditions is the hardest pose of all yoga. It’s the moment of true surrender, it’s the moment you meant to truly quiet the mind and the body.. and that's extremely hard to do. As I started my yoga journey, I didn’t see any value in Savasana, and that used to be the moment when I started to plan the rest of my day. Nowadays however, if you leave me in savasana for a full hour, I’ll happily stay! It’s my moment of true surrender, to be truly with myself, truly present, truly here!” QUESTION: What is your least favorite pose right now/why? LUNA: “I was really into forearm stand and scorpio variation for a while, but currently practicing Mukta Hasta Sirsasana Six has been my guilty pleasure. Mukta means free. Hasta means hands. Mukta Hasta Sirsasana Sixs, is a free headstand pose, in reality the hands are fully extended in front of you with the palms facing up the sky.” QUESTION: What lessons from the yoga mat have you applied off your mat? LUNA: “Remembering to breathe and to play. I have always been an anxious person. I’ve always been a perfectionist, and the reality is that life is messy! Life will throw you on your knees, twist you and turn you upside down.. When we are in the midst of chaos taking a long deep breath can completely change how you react with whatever is coming your way. Remembering to play, to be silly, to be weird without being concerned about what others will think, can be deeply healing. Being fully yourself, laughing and dancing, remembering that we don’t need to be too serious, that life doesn’t need to be that hard! Just have fun! I find that the older I get the more and more the things that I used to do as a kid, are the ones who truly bring me joy! Be like a kid again! And don’t forget to take a deep breath!” QUESTION: Do you have a guilty pleasure/binge watch anything etc. (fave TV show or movie)? LUNA: “Who doesn’t love to binge watch a TV show?! I’m one of these people that can finish an entire season in one day. (laughs) I finished the entire 8 seasons of Game of Thrones in one month when I finally surrendered to the trend. Absolutely loved it! You can call me a nerd when it comes from TV shows, love superhero movies, any sci-fi, or anything that seems unreal or futuristic.. Very aquarius of me! But my one and only guilty pleasure is to sleep at the beach sunbathing with the sound of the ocean in the background. I can wait for our Retreat in Tulum!!” QUESTION: What is your post-class meal craving? LUNA: “Anything cold! A smoothie, açai bowl or even a gatorade! In the Yoga Sutra’s Chapter 1.33, Pantanjali gives us a 4-part process to help us clear our hearts of negative energies as a means for quieting our minds. Four keys to nurture joy within... Maitri [friendliness]: Kindness and friendliness to those who are happy, instead of being jealous and resentful of their mode. Rather than living with mental scarcity thinking one person’s happiness will cause us to run out of happiness we must appreciate their joy, realizing the potential for all of us to be happy at the same time. Karuna [compassion]: Compassion for those who are in pain, those that are suffering including yourself. The practice means no longer self-sabotaging oneself nor catastrophizing but instead learning how to self-comfort. It implies you see yourself as deserving of compassion. This applies outwardly as well, that we cannot choose towards whom we have compassion but it is universal and unconditional. Mudita [joy]: Respect, admiration and honor for those who embody noble qualities. In practice this means eliminating envy towards those that are living honorable lives. We must genuinely celebrate achievements. This reminds us that we can be inspired by others' greatness to then be inspiring. We all have innate greatness. Upeksanam [equanimity]: towards those who hurt us. Peacefulness towards those whose actions oppose our values. Instead of choosing the “like” button or even the “dislike” button choosing neutral. There will be some people that purposefully will try to harm you or people you love. Your choice is not to engage them in a fight. You can simply stop struggling. This is where the idea of “would you rather be right or be happy” comes from. We encounter many people in life; Happy people (sukha), Unhappy people (dukha), Honorable people (punya), Malicious people (apunya)... Our approach, the way we cultivate and navigate through relationships, choosing to constitute a path that leads us to happiness cannot be shaken if we nurture ourselves with the above 4 keys. As it turns out, there’s real science behind that! Copious scientific studies have been conducted suggest that practicing yoga can actually make you a happier person. The physical and mental benefits of yoga stem from the way the brain reacts to the practice. This happens in several ways. First, it starts with relaxation. Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter (aka your brain’s chemical messenger) that suppresses neural activity to prevent the brain from getting overly excited. By doing this, GABA controls how much fear, stress, anxiety or nervousness you’ll feel in a given situation. Research shows that yoga can increase your GABA levels by 27%. Then there’s the direct impact on the Happiness Hormones, aka dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. These hormones consistently get released during yoga at greater levels than with many other activities. This could be due to the mind-body connection and yoga’s focus on more than just physical exertion. Next up is the stress element, specifically stress reduction. This comes from certain parts of the brain slowing down during yoga. The frontal lobe, the part that’s responsible for thinking, planning, and reasoning, takes a backseat during the yoga practice. This is what allows your brain to feel like it’s taken a mini vacation. The parietal lobe, which handles all the information coming from the senses (sights, sounds, observations) is also signaled to be less activated when it trusts that it’s in a safe environment (i.e., your favorite yoga class). Finally, the two major stress hormones that get activated on a regular basis for many of us (cortisol and adrenaline) are encouraged to pump the breaks. Cortisol and adrenaline are useful for keeping us safe in high-stress environments, but yoga isn’t supposed to be that. Finding peace and solace in your yoga practice can help you regulate your cortisol levels and operate at a more balanced equilibrium. So is yoga the key to happiness? It could be! I’m going to tell you a short anecdote about an interaction I had with a sweet woman named Betty. This happened on December 27th, two days after Christmas. Cheer was still in the air, as was the misty fog left behind by the rainy weather NYC experienced. The streets were slippery and puddles were plentiful. As I rushed from one meeting to another, I noticed an older woman with a cane struggling to get off the sidewalk. I’d normally breeze past someone like this (after all, who has the time?!) but that day I decided to turn around and ask her if she could use a hand. She looked up at me with big, grateful eyes and said she was just trying to cross the street to get a cab. I offered her my hand and said, “So let’s do that.” As we slowly made our way across the street, I learned that her name was Betty. She kindly asked about my Christmas and then proceeded to tell me that hers was just as pleasant; she spent it with her grandkids and the whole family put on their annual 12 Days of Christmas play. Upon arriving at the other side of the street, I quickly hailed a cab and held Betty’s cane and bag as she hoisted herself up inside the vehicle. She was incredibly thankful, as was I. I walked away from that interaction with a sense of pride, but not necessarily because I had done a good deed. Sure, that was part of it, but more importantly I felt like I understood something. “Ohh,” I mused. “That’s why.” That’s why I do yoga. That’s why I keep myself strong. That’s why it’s important to work on strength and mobility, both in body but also in mind. It’s not so I don’t end up like Betty because the truth is that anyone can end up needing a cane, aged, injured, or not. I do all these things, the chaturangas and the warrior poses, so I’m physically strong enough to offer an older woman a helping hand. Moreso, it’s so that she can trust that she’ll be safe as I guide her across the street. That’s what the yoga is about. I encourage you to ask yourself how yoga shows up for you in the real world in your own life. If it isn’t apparent right now, that’s perfectly fine. Want to build heat in your practice? I got'yah! The practice of yoga, when given true care and awareness can help you build heat and it ignites a rise in heat to the body, invigorates your internal organs, activates muscles and gets your cardiovascular system excited. Step 1: True attention to the Breath: keep the breathing consistent, control your prana (upward rising energy) and apana (outward flow). Are you really focused on your breathing or are you more worried about the posture, aesthetic of the pose and the next pose rather than staying in tune with the inhale and exhale? When we don’t connect with our breathing, the joints and muscles will be rigid and then you cannot align physically on the mat to meet your needs. Step 2: Focus on your alignment: It is imperative for muscular development and advancement into structured poses to practice proper alignment that serves your body's needs. Instead of over-stretching, practicing the same variations without taking note of your spatial positioning and not being self-aware of mechanics, allow the muscles to engage around our skeletal structure and allow your alignment to help you create heat through fitting positioning in poses. Step 3: What are we eating or drinking pre-class, doing pre-class? Select your foods carefully, drink hot drinks, warm foods and avoid inflammatory foods and alcohol. A hot shower or warm bath prior to the practice is also recommended. ** When we don’t build enough heat, the joints and muscles will be rigid, and the progression of poses will seem disconnected. Internal heat is essential for preventing injuries and it helps create more ease in the deeper poses. Getting some of the cardio component with repetitions and standing flows also targets our most important muscle... the heart. As teachers & students we have to remember that in order for us to get into the middle and end postures safely, it requires effectively warming up the spine, shoulders, hips, and hamstrings from various angles.
