“Should you shield the canyons from the windstorms you would never see the true beauty of their carvings.” The ancient practice of Yoga was never meant to be the answer to all of life’s challenges. Rather, it is a philosophy and a system of practice for living. Asanas [poses] do not eliminate challenges and problems we encounter day-to-day, but rather teaches the practitioner how to maintain equanimity and live peacefully through life’s inevitable challenges.
Being in a pose, flowing through a practice and the challenging components of the exercises of Yoga teaches strength, perseverance, and contentment within difficult times, and to release attachment from goals or outcomes. It is an element of practice for the yogi to face these challenges rather than to avoid them. Yogis pray to Ganesh for positive outcomes and good fortune. But what many don’t know is that there is much more to the deity. The iconography of the Ganesh silhouette is rich with heart teachings and really amazing and grounding life lessons and warnings. Ganesh’s trunk features twists and turns. That symbolizes the twists and turns of life, and the twists and turns of the heart’s journey of awakening. It tells us that the spiritual path is not a straight line. It’s not predictable. When it twists, you can’t see around the corner. You can’t see the unknown. This can produce anxiety. Facing the unknown can be frightening for the part of us that needs to know, the part that needs certainty. To awaken to a broader reality that includes uncertainty and the unknown requires regular practice. Why? Because we have to constantly work with our fear of the unknown. And fear is just the beginning. There’s more that lurks around the corner – self-doubt, unworthiness, need for approval and validation, all patterns of limitation and smallness, to name just a few. To stay on the path of the heart against the greatest odds takes perseverance. It’s a life-time practice….at least. Ultimately, finding your true self on the mat and meeting yourself at your best and worst daily will build perseverance. The journey is never an easy one, filled with challenges as we discover ourselves. Challenges shouldn’t be viewed as negatives, but rather as integral stepping stones on the path of yoga. Practicing yoga - especially in the morning - is a powerful way to take charge of your day with a clear, thoughtful, and activated intention. Your morning practice is “the difference between leading the day rather than letting it lead you," says Alexandra DeSiato, coauthor of 'Teaching Yoga Beyond the Poses.'
We actively choose the theme of the day with an a.m practice, being intentional, focused, present, and in the moment... and giving us a frame of reference to reflect on for future happenings of the day. The later you schedule it, the more conflict with other activities will arise, and greater the chance of the practice getting sidelined. After your morning practice, you can feel confident that you did something great for yourself; physically and mentally. When your day goes a bit too long and you don't make it to your cardio or strength class, you can rest assured that you have already done your exercise for the day without beating yourself up about not having time for exercise. Also, understand your personal energy rhythm. Pay attention to what time of the day feels the best for your yoga; whether it's movement or meditation. Honor those rhythms by scheduling your day accordingly. LOADS OF NEW ON-DEMAND CLASSES... WHAT IS #YOGAEVERYDAMNDAY ANYWAY? WHY THE POPULAR HASHTAG IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN ASANA Hang out on Instagram long enough and you’re likely to come across #yogaeverydamnday. This hashtag may be popular, but what does it even mean? Do you have to do yoga every day, and is that even safe? Beyond that, does the concept of doing yoga every single day mean that there’s now pressure or competition associated with yoga? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose? These are all questions to consider, so let’s! First things first, is practicing asana (the physical postures of yoga) safe to do every day? Generally yes, but the most important thing to do is what’s right for your body. If you are practicing strenuous asana every single day to the point where your muscles, joints, and bones feel fatigued, it’s probably a good idea to back off and alternate with a restorative practice like yin yoga. Aside from that, are there other ways to practice yoga beyond taking a class or participating in asana? Absolutely! Asana is only one of the 8 limbs of yoga. The 8 Limbs of Yoga
Taking time to live at least one of these limbs each day is still practicing yoga, perhaps sometimes even more intelligently than if you come to your mat. The guiding principle should be your intention – why are you doing #yogaeverydamnday? The definition of yoga, which is “to yolk” or “to unite.” Putting yourself in any setting that fosters a sense of unity is practicing yoga. For some, that means rolling out their mat in a studio. For others, it’s about getting together with a dear friend over a cup of coffee. Others still find breathwork or a 5-minute morning meditation to be their #yogaeverydamnday. One is not more “yoga” than the other. The practice is ever changing, but never absolute. Whether on or off the mat, yoga is here for you every damn day. LOADS OF NEW ON-DEMAND CLASSES... Not only does it improve your relationship with yourself, but it shows others how to love you." - Dr. Sharon Martin Meditation, like yoga, is a highly personal and intimate practice. Once you've developed a routine that works for you, chances are that you'll continue to hone that practice until you notice its benefits permeating all facets of your life.
There is no one way to "do it right," and we need to scrap the myths and misconceptions about meditation & yoga practice that may present a challenge from progressing with a healthy schedule to invite it into your life. THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY TO MEDITATE! FALSE! Whether it's a mantra meditation (chanting, repetitive rhythmic verbal or internal reciting of inspiring words) , a walking meditation, creative meditation (imagining and strengthening positive aspects of the mind)... pick the one that speaks to you! ONLY AN EMPTY MIND IS NEEDED TO MEDITATE. When the mind is jumping from thought to thought during our practice, this is an opportunity to train the mind so as not to become absorbed in those thoughts. Taking note of your thoughts and the emotions that accompany them is also a part of the meditation process.Meditating is very much an observation. Whether you’re focusing on a mantra or something in your environment, meditation is an opportunity to observe the thoughts that move through your mind and your body, without becoming attached to them. If there is ever a time when your mind is "clear," it might be the space between one thought and the next. YOU HAVE TO SIT FOR HOUR FOR THE MEDITATION TO "WORK" It is admirable and even enviable when people get into total absorption for hours. In actuality though, meditation does not have to consume too much time. Just as there are many styles of meditation, there are many ways to fit it into your daily life. Preparation for practice is equally important, and knowing how much time you can commit to mediation is vital in setting goals to get yourself intune with yourself. You'll get the most out of your practice by turning it into a habit... regardless of the duration. Just remember, any Meditation or yoga practice —in any form— requires the practitioner’s sincerity, and thus will involve some study on your part. The practice lasts a lifetime. May it always remind us that you’re always exactly where you need to be. LOADS OF NEW ON-DEMAND CLASSES...
