APRIL AWARENESS
"Awareness is the greatest agent for change." — Eckhart Tolle

It’s time to take a breath of fresh air (literally) and smell the damn roses!

Finally, warmer weather is here. New life is here. We are here. What do we notice?

  • The greenness of each blade of grass.
  • The vibrancy of blooming red tulips.
  • The moisture in the air.
  • The sound of children squealing on the playground. Finally! For months they’ve been cooped up inside, relegated to dusty playrooms with carpets and germ-laden legos.
  • The resurgence of yoga in the park, evening walks, and people reconvening in the real world once again.

This time of year is an opportunity to become aware anew. Instead of staring at the same four walls and rotating between turning your radiator on medium to high and back again, how can you open your eyes and open your window to something new?

This newness doesn’t require you to make any dramatic changes in your life or routine. It could simply come from a heightened sense of awareness of yourself and your surroundings.

Perhaps life got stale this winter. The brutal cold forced most of us indoors and kept us there for quite a while. It induced boredom and maybe complacency. It’s possible that nothing technically changed but life started to feel mundane. Going through the same motions every day got old fast and we started to wonder if it would ever end. Well it has.

That cold, icy time has come and gone, as it always does. Maybe it felt extra harsh this year or maybe we just forgot how tough it always is. Either way, we can now approach this new season with a fresh set of eyes and an optimistic outlook.

As we crack open our windows and let the fresh air in, we can be like sponges and absorb everything. Let’s soak it up. Let’s take extra time to appreciate the 60-70 degree days. Let’s spend an extra 10 minutes walking in the park because we’re not running to escape the cold. And maybe in yoga, let’s plant ourselves on the mat and pay attention to everything:

  • How do I feel in this pose?
  • Am I spreading my toes instead or gripping the mat?
  • What’s the quality of my breath like as I transition from half moon to warrior two?
  • How active are my limbs in this warrior one?
  • Am I fidgeting in savasana? Do I need to?

These questions are not judgments. They’re simply meant to heighten our level of awareness and get us out of the autopilot mode we’ve been in for the past several months. Let’s become aware of ourselves, our actions, our habits, and our tendencies. Let’s become aware of how fortunate we are to have the physical, mental, and emotional space to practice yoga. Let’s open our eyes and welcome something new.

Yoga at OHM Schedule w/ Victor 3/20-3/26/2023: What Vernal Equinox means for your yoga practice

Spring Equinox:
What the Vernal Equinox means for your yoga practice
"The first blooms of spring always make my heart sing." – S. Brown, poet
Elinor Cohen, Victor Cotto Yoga NYC Best Yoga Teachers, Upper East Side Best Yoga Victor Cotto, New York Yoga HOT, Vicyasa™ Inspiring Yoga Victor, On Demand, LIVE, Sui Yoga, Yoga Spark, Astoria Queens Yoga, Long Island City Yoga

(This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.)
Equal parts day and night mark the Spring Equinox. Also referred to as the Vernal Equinox, this day marks the official start of spring! This season is seen by many as a time of renewal and transformation. The flowers that have been growing underground can finally begin to bloom, and with that comes the opportunity for planning and progress.

In Latin, the word “vernal” translates to new and fresh. How do we incorporate this into our yoga practice? Perhaps it means refinding your yoga practice. If time on your mat hasn’t been as frequent (read: nonexistent for some) throughout the winter months, the Spring Equinox could be the perfect opportunity to start anew with a refreshed appreciation for all that your body and mind can do.

Those who have been regularly practicing may consider incorporating Kapha qualities into your asana. Kapha is the Ayurvedic dosha most closely linked to spring. Consider leaning into the qualities of moistness and abundance by practicing hot yoga, spending time in a sauna or steam room, and incorporating elements of grounding into your postures.

Other ways to welcome in spring:

  • Root down firmly in balancing poses.
  • Reconnect to the muladhara chakra (root chakra), located at the base of the spine.
  • Spend time in nature.
  • Move slowly and avoid rushing.
  • Prioritize immediate needs over long-term aspirations.
  • Make decisions based on trust, not fear.
  • Rediscover introspection (journaling, therapy, meditation).

Consider this your permission slip to stop and smell the roses…as well as the tulips, daisies, and lilies. Now is the time to enjoy all the abundance that spring is sure to bring.
