“How many lessons of faith and beauty we should lose, if there were no winter in our year!” —Thomas Wentworth Higginson As the days continue to get darker earlier and stay frigid, many of us get moody and tired. Half of Americans suffer from seasonal affective disorder; many not officially diagnosed, more suffer from a lesser form known as the winter blues.
Symptoms can start as early as September, but January is the peak month. Fortunately, there are ways to keep spirits high, from eating better to redoing your living space. Putting together a coalition of treatments in order to beat the doldrums of Winter will keep you upbeat and combating the cold months. MEDITATE TO BEAT STRESS Setting aside a few minutes each day to meditate reduceS stress levels. Focus on your breath or use guided meditation apps to help calm your mind. Practice deep breathing exercises to center yourself. Inhale deeply for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale for four. This simple technique can alleviate anxiety and tension. EXERCISE/YOGA IN THE MORNING The benefits of exercise are plentiful, but the time of day you work out also matters. Studies show that morning exercisers report better sleep, burn more calories throughout the day, and have lower blood pressure. GRATITUDE JOURNALING Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the positive aspects of Winter. Write down things you appreciate about the season, no matter how small, to foster a sense of gratitude. FILL UP YOUR SOCIAL CALENDAR When it’s already dark and freezing by 5 pm, most people want to head home from work. But holing up is one of the worst things you can do for your mood. Research published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology showed that people who suffered from depression reported higher levels of well-being and satisfaction after positive social interactions. It’s likely that feeling a sense of belonging reduced depressive symptoms, the authors wrote. SEEK HELP If you find that the winter blues are severely affecting your daily life and well-being, consider seeking professional help. A mental health therapist or counselor can provide strategies tailored to your specific needs and may recommend therapies such as light therapy, which can be effective for SAD. Winter doesn’t have to be a season of gloom and low spirits. By incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine, you can enhance your mental well-being, alleviate the winter blues, and embrace the season with a sense of tranquility and inner peace. Mindfulness reminds us that even during the coldest months, the warmth of self-awareness can light our path to mental health and happiness. A PEEK INTO MENTORSHIP WITH VICYASA™... "Breathe deeply, until sweet air extinguishes the burn of fear in your lungs and every breath is a beautiful refusal to become anything less than infinite." Want to build heat in your practice? I got'yah! The practice of yoga, when given true care and awareness can help you build heat and it ignites a rise in heat to the body, invigorates your internal organs, activates muscles and gets your cardiovascular system excited. Step 1: True attention to the Breath: keep the breathing consistent, control your prana (upward rising energy) and apana (outward flow). Are you really focused on your breathing or are you more worried about the posture, aesthetic of the pose and the next pose rather than staying in tune with the inhale and exhale? When we don’t connect with our breathing, the joints and muscles will be rigid and then you cannot align physically on the mat to meet your needs. Step 2: Focus on your alignment: It is imperative for muscular development and advancement into structured poses to practice proper alignment that serves your body's needs. Instead of over-stretching, practicing the same variations without taking note of your spatial positioning and not being self-aware of mechanics, allow the muscles to engage around our skeletal structure and allow your alignment to help you create heat through fitting positioning in poses. Step 3: What are we eating or drinking pre-class, doing pre-class? Select your foods carefully, drink hot drinks, warm foods and avoid inflammatory foods and alcohol. A hot shower or warm bath prior to the practice is also recommended. When we don’t build enough heat, the joints and muscles will be rigid, and the progression of poses will seem disconnected. Internal heat is essential for preventing injuries and it helps create more ease in the deeper poses. Getting some of the cardio component with repetitions and standing flows also targets our most important muscle... the heart. As teachers & students we have to remember that in order for us to get into the middle and end postures safely, it requires effectively warming up the spine, shoulders, hips, and hamstrings from various angles. In the Yoga Sutra’s Chapter 1.33, Pantanjali gives us a 4-part process to help us clear our hearts of negative energies as a means for quieting our minds.
Four keys to nurture joy within... Maitri [friendliness]: Kindness and friendliness to those who are happy, instead of being jealous and resentful of their mode. Rather than living with mental scarcity thinking one person’s happiness will cause us to run out of happiness we must appreciate their joy, realizing the potential for all of us to be happy at the same time. Karuna [compassion]: Compassion for those who are in pain, those that are suffering including yourself. The practice means no longer self-sabotaging oneself nor catastrophizing but instead learning how to self-comfort. It implies you see yourself as deserving of compassion. This applies outwardly as well, that we cannot choose towards whom we have compassion but it is universal and unconditional. Mudita [joy]: Respect, admiration and honor for those who embody noble qualities. In practice this means eliminating envy towards those that are living honorable lives. We must genuinely celebrate achievements. This reminds us that we can be inspired by others' greatness to then be inspiring. We all have innate greatness. Upeksanam [equanimity]: towards those who hurt us. Peacefulness towards those whose actions oppose our values. Instead of choosing the “like” button or even the “dislike” button choosing neutral. There will be some people that purposefully will try to harm you or people you love. Your choice is not to engage them in a fight. You can simply stop struggling. This is where the idea of “would you rather be right or be happy” comes from. We encounter many people in life; Happy people (sukha), Unhappy people (dukha), Honorable people (punya), Malicious people (apunya)... Our approach, the way we cultivate and navigate through relationships, choosing to constitute a path that leads us to happiness cannot be shaken if we nurture ourselves with the above four keys. Whether it’s gift-giving, making a grander meal, or planning the perfect day, this season can cause way more stress than is needed when we’re trying to make things more extravagant, special or better than ever. The Niyamas teach us that Santosha or ‘contentment’ is one of the most valuable states we can cultivate within ourselves. Practicing contentment invites us to stop pursuing the “I’ll be happy when...” narrative, and instead turn our attention to “what do I have to be grateful about right now?”
Yoga philosophy teaches us that much of our pain and unrest in life comes from our constant pursuit of what we want, instead of simply being where we are. Practicing Santosha throughout the holiday season gives us an opportunity to look at what we already have in life, instead of falling prey to the temptation to fill our stockings with stuff that simply brings fleeting pleasure. Whether it's Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi Day or any other festival that honors this season, they all recognize the importance of LIGHT and the divinity within all of us and how we all can spread the light of love, joy and inspiration. Supporters, subscribers and friends... you've been the luminosity in my life - I am grateful. Why not adapt the rhyme, make it your own with a pinch of Yoga and Asana and adopt the teachings of our beloved practice during this Holiday season?
We continue in our paths as aspiring yogis by closing 2025 by giving thanks, choosing to acknowledge our blessings and practicing one of these 12 observances of yoga inspiration each day to give yourself more love this season. Start and end the day with gratitude: Wake up everyday acknowledging the blessing of life and close reviewing what in the day you can be grateful about. Look into the mirror and state your joy for the day: You can integrate that wake up with a deep gaze into your eyes and recognize the true beauty that lives inside and out. GIVE... : There is nothing better than returning the blessings you have been given to those who need it more. As simple as going through your closet and other belongings & donating to charity. There is always something we can do to help others. Pamper yourself: One day... one massage. One day of manicure and pedicure. Looking to get a facial to ease tension? DO IT! Light a candle... and just watch it flicker during your meditation: This can sharpen your concentration, ease your racing thoughts & ignite the flame inside your mind’s eye and awakening your inner intuition. Mantra, Sing... dance: Your meditation one day could be just repeating inspiring words [mantra] or your favorite lyrics to songs that uplift you. Turn up the music in your home and just dance. Slow down with your asana: A yin class... a breathework or ceremony where the focus is to ground. Instead of seeking high impact movement... root! Create a vision board for 2026: Yeah yeah yea... I know. The whole resolution thing. But seriously... a literal board, or journaling through pictures, writing and or voice memos as reminders of what you want and how you will achieve it. Treat yourself to an amazing breakfast, lunch or dinner: A day or night to go out, put on the outfit you love the most and indulge. Make plans to go out with a friend, a loved one: A Holiday show? A stroll in the park and a catch-up day with a person you havent seen or talked to in a while? Reinvigorate a relationship or continue to add fire to one and take the initiative to make it happen. Journal... a love letter to yourself: Begin by addressing yourself warmly, and write as though it is a close friend or your beloved you are writing to. Write about the qualities you admire in yourself, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the things that make you unique.By writing down what’s circling through your mind, you can gain a clearer understanding of where your thoughts aren’t serving you. And when you journal to replace your harsh judgment of yourself with kindness and understanding, it can profoundly shift the way you treat yourself. Try something new: So, is there something that interests you to try out? Maybe dancing, cooking, illustrations, gardening, or any other hobby. Try it out! You might find a soothing companion for your soul. Un-PLUG: ONE FULL DAY! No screens. No emails. No constant scrolling. No walking down the street with your head buried in your device. Not one subway ride with your head curled into your phone. Create a boundary from the dependency. It may not rhyme like the song "The Twelve Days of..." but it has the same spirit. Embracing joy, generosity, love, and compassion, focusing on giving, kindness, and selflessness. Fostering this goodness now in an effort to ideally it becoming a year-round lifestyle. COMING SOON... Setting an intention for yourself each day as a part of your morning routine will raise your vibrations to attract more love and positivity and inspire you to channel that positive energy into action. Intention setting is a loving commitment to oneself that joins the heart and mind on a journey to one’s highest calling. Simply put, it is to clearly state what you want to experience and achieve through your actions. Setting an intention can be done in all aspects of your life, from relationships and personal life to your work life. Spend some quiet time and reflect on the experiences, relationships, the feelings, the things that you wish to experience in your life. Take some time to feel the emotions you may feel when you experience your intentions in your life. From there, write down the intentions you want to set. Then, spend time thinking about how having these intentions come into your reality will feel, what does it look like, feel like, what will you be doing? Get as vivid and clear as you can in these steps as feeling the emotions will activate the intentions and allow for them to flow easily to you. Your thoughts that turn into emotions, which inspire actions, are all used to manifest your intentions. Intention Setting Examples:

We can refer to the Sutras of Patanjali and focus on the Niyamas, specifically Santosa.
Santosa, (pronounced often as “san-toh-sha"), means contentment & the practice of this Niyama involves finding inner peace by accepting the present moment without being consumed by external circumstances, desires, or the need for what others have. It is not about stagnation, but about appreciating what is, while still being able to work toward goals from a place of abundance rather than lack. The Sutra we can look at 2.42; santosha anuttamah sukha-labhah, states that from contentment, unsurpassed happiness is gained. This Sutra emphasizes that true joy comes from inner satisfaction and gratitude for what you have, rather than from pursuing external desires or possessions. In a culture of excess, we seldom stop to just be content. We are always searching for the next best thing, the newer gadget, the "better" job, the bigger paycheck. One thing we can practice as yogis, and pass along to our family is the practice of mindfulness and awareness; slowing down to observe and recognize the beauty of provision. To distinguish the difference between a need and a desire. Practicing contentment will bring joy. Joy will awaken one’s heart to love. This love creates and reminds us of the unity we can experience with our fellow humans. Unity and togetherness ... that's called Yoga. COMING SOON... Weekend intensives!!! Your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest can either be flowers or weeds.” — William Wordsworth I love talking about planting seeds when we practice. Often, we do so with fierce intention and clarity. We cultivate a plan and things work out. The harvest is bountiful and all is coming.
But because it is life... regardless of how many crops are planted, there are obstacles to fertilizing those seeds. We’re still open to the process and looking optimistically to the harvest but we know our methods need to change or be refined. We can avoid harvest failure with the right inputs. Other times, we are just stuck in a muck, unsure of either what to plant, where to plant it or how to take care of it. These times are often precipitated by big transitions that may be planned or unanticipated. Leaving home, getting married, starting a family, a job change, starting a business, closing a business, moving, divorce, retiring, the death of a loved one or friend are just some examples of things that get us stuck in a "rut.". There may be a sense of indecision, a torment, an inner discomfort, a disconnection from what feels like an inner alignment. These times of uncertainty will always be part of the journey. When we are in the muck, uncertain of our direction, but knowing that we need to do something different or make a change, the ancients guided us in a few ideas about what to do. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are an influential philosophical text of yoga that lay out teachings on the mind and how to cultivate mental clarity and discernment. They had ideas about how to dig our way out of the mire. Yoga Sutra 1.32: Commit to the practice of a single principle/discipline Give yourself 5-10 minutes just to meditate; committing to daily journaling to gain clarity when things are not clear. Yoga Sutra 1.34: Practicing pranayama that involves forceful exhalation or retention of breath, one acquires a pristine state of mind We gain mental clarity by working with our breath to reduce the stress responses and quiet the mind and emotions so that we have clear discernment in making decisions. Yoga Sutra 1.39: Meditate on something that is meaningful to you What resonates for us will be something very deeply personal. We have to do the work. Once new habits are built and ingrained into our neural pathways and routines, less focus needs to be put on sustaining the desired result. Keeping 10lbs off is easy with good habits because we essentially reap what we sow. Physically and mentally. If you don’t have a crop harvest right now, it is only because you didn’t plant seeds and nurture them. Yoga helps us to create the harvest we want by cultivating a healthy mind-body-spirit connection. Mind your thoughts, as they can and will create the life and harvest you have. COMING SOON... Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Every year around the holidays, the topic of gift giving creeps up. While the holidays are about so much more than presents, it would be remiss to say that gifts don’t play a role in the festivities. After all, look around you. The endless supply of ads and promotions for sales, discounts, deals, and specials all promote the same message: BUY, GIVE, GET! That’s consumerism for you. Alas, it doesn’t all have to be so material.
Let’s introduce yoga into the equation and explore the idea of yoga being a gift. First things first, can yoga be a gift? Of course it can. In the literal sense, you could buy or receive a class pack or membership to a studio, but the actual yoga practice could also be a gift in and of itself. The yoga practice is special. It teaches us to reorganize and reframe our thoughts, principles, and priorities. It emphasizes a connection between body, mind, and breath. It encourages us to slow down and appreciate the present that is presence. It allows us to get lost in the flow of movement and connection; to do the dance of simply existing and to witness that beauty. Yoga is a gift for the students as well as for the instructors. Both are simultaneously gift givers and recipients. The teachers and studios give students space, grace, and guidance. The students reciprocate by giving teachers the opportunity to express their creativity and share their wisdom with hungry, earnest, appreciative minds. In that sense, it is a beautiful symbiotic relationship and one that poses the question who is giving and who is giving? Can it be both at the same time? Can all gifts work that way? Absolutely. Think about it - while it’s fun to get a new sweater, isn’t it just as fun and fulfilling to present that new sweater to your friend who you know has been eyeing it for months? Doesn’t the act of giving it to them fill you with a warm sensation inside? No, that’s not the Mongolian cashmere nor is it the external heat of the 105 degree yoga room. It’s the knowledge that you’ve given someone something they wouldn’t otherwise have. It feels fantastic to receive something from someone who you know put time, energy, thought, care, and effort into it; it feels just as amazing to give that to someone who you can see appreciates and values it. When you think about gifts in this way, you see that they always go both ways as long as the manner in which they come about is done with integrity and non attachment, or a lack of expectation to receive in return. This holiday season, I invite you to rethink how you experience gifts. Focus on the feelings, both the ones that come from receiving gifts as well as those that come from delivering them. Our mind is no longer chasing after something in the future or lingering somewhere in the past. We are content." — Birgitte Kristen Many of my teachers speak about cultivating the qualities that nurture us. There are infinite qualities that exist within us—such as courageousness, empathy, creativity, anger, hurt, pain, excitement, jealousy, hope, peace, understanding—and each one may arise throughout the day.
Which qualities can you cultivate to find peace in our lives this holiday season; the qualities that allow us to be present and fully engaged in the moment. Cultivating, focusing on, to read about, to listen to, to observe, to foster those qualities of appreciation, gratitude, understanding, and compassion within us, allows our mind to be at peace. I am grateful to be teaching. I am grateful for all that Yoga has taught me, and is teaching me moment to moment. As a teacher, I'm always yearning for wisdom in order to articulate and be clear in conveying this tangible, yet not so tangible thing called yoga. As a person, we are always striving to be happy, to be content with who we are as a person. I am grateful for who I have become as a person. I have work to do—I am still working on relationships with others—but, so far, I like me. Many blessings to the yoga community. May we all grow together. MENTORSHIP WITH VICYASA™...
