Want to build heat in your practice? I got'yah! The practice of yoga, when given true care and awareness can help you build heat and it ignites a rise in heat to the body, invigorates your internal organs, activates muscles and gets your cardiovascular system excited. Step 1: True attention to the Breath: keep the breathing consistent, control your prana (upward rising energy) and apana (outward flow). Are you really focused on your breathing or are you more worried about the posture, aesthetic of the pose and the next pose rather than staying in tune with the inhale and exhale? When we don’t connect with our breathing, the joints and muscles will be rigid and then you cannot align physically on the mat to meet your needs. Step 2: Focus on your alignment: It is imperative for muscular development and advancement into structured poses to practice proper alignment that serves your body's needs. Instead of over-stretching, practicing the same variations without taking note of your spatial positioning and not being self-aware of mechanics, allow the muscles to engage around our skeletal structure and allow your alignment to help you create heat through fitting positioning in poses. Step 3: What are we eating or drinking pre-class, doing pre-class? Select your foods carefully, drink hot drinks, warm foods and avoid inflammatory foods and alcohol. A hot shower or warm bath prior to the practice is also recommended. ** When we don’t build enough heat, the joints and muscles will be rigid, and the progression of poses will seem disconnected. Internal heat is essential for preventing injuries and it helps create more ease in the deeper poses. Getting some of the cardio component with repetitions and standing flows also targets our most important muscle... the heart. As teachers & students we have to remember that in order for us to get into the middle and end postures safely, it requires effectively warming up the spine, shoulders, hips, and hamstrings from various angles. “Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness in people.” Obviously, yoga is a huge part of my life. It began as a way to relieve stress, re-shape my body, rewire my mind... but the more I practiced, the more I knew I needed yoga in my life. When I finally made the decision to participate in teacher training, I did not expect yoga to become what I did for a career. My yoga teacher training was awakening, life altering and transformative. It put many things in perspective and it helped me to realize what was no longer in alignment with how I wanted to live my life. When I made the choice to leave my job as an Occupational Therapist and pursue teaching yoga full-time, I knew it was the right decision. I knew then, that my Dharma, my path, was to teach yoga, translate the teachings as they aligned with my experiences and be a guide, a voice and an aspiring model of the doctrines. As time goes on, I see how my path becomes even more clear. I didn't decide to teach yoga to become a yoga celebrity, to become rich, or popular. I did it to serve; to help people heal themselves as I had found the path to be a healthy one for me. I know that not everyone will like me or how I teach. And I'm okay with that because that means I am being authentic. I always say, I don't want to be everyone's favorite jam for their toast. If everyone likes me, that means I am doing something wrong and not being true to myself, which wouldn't be practicing Satya (truth). Teaching is something that comes natural to me because I love to share my knowledge. When we surrender we place our faith and trust in the Divine. We aren't trying to control or manipulate outcomes, we just go with the flow and we live our lives in the moment. How freeing, right? Now, this doesn't mean we don't take personal responsibility for our actions, it just means we aren't attached to any particular outcome, and we trust there is a Divine plan. We don't know what the future holds or how the rest of our lives will unfold. Ishvarapranidhana (creative surrender) is placing trust and faith in something greater than ourselves and knowing it will all work out to benefit all. At least, that's what I'm hoping for. Again, I don't have all the answers. I know I can't control outcomes or people; all I can control is myself and my response to life. And I choose to let go and live free, with no attachments to cause my own suffering. Again, that's what I'm working towards and constantly practicing. Find your purpose and be of service to the world. And then let go of the results. Trust that the Universe has your back, just like you have mine and I have yours. Then, spend time thinking about how having these intentions come into your reality will feel, what does it look like, feel like, what will you be doing? Get as vivid and clear as you can in these steps as feeling the emotions will activate the intentions and allow for them to flow easily to you. Consider the following scenario: A student says, “I’m not advanced but I want to take an advanced level class: can I? should I?” It’s with this question that we step into a discussion about class levels and their labels: they’re there for a reason, and that is to tell students what they can expect. A level 2/3 class is designed to be harder than one for beginners. Students in advanced level classes are expected to have an understanding above the basics. Classes labeled “power” typically indicate strength and may move more quickly than those with a “slow flow” or “all levels'' label. Class labels aren’t random; they exist to indicate the pace, complexity of sequencing, and caliber of students that can be expected. With that in mind, it’s up to you as a student to manage your expectations and be honest with yourself. For example, if you’ve taken yoga for a number of years, know the names of the poses, and feel confident in your physical abilities, chances are you can enter most classes without it being a problem. Whether or not you’ll be able to do all the poses is another story, but most respectable teachers and studios will accept you with open arms. Sometimes the advanced class is the only one that fits your schedule. Or maybe you really like an instructor and want to challenge yourself. In these cases, as long as you can remain physically safe to yourself and others, and you know what to expect, you should be fine. Now on the other hand, if you’ve never taken a yoga class before, don’t know the names of the poses, or have a physical ailment that will prevent you from doing the majority of the class, it’s probably best to refrain from leveling up. This is to prevent injuries and to ensure that you actually get something valuable out of the class. After all, if you’re sitting on your mat, watching everyone else for most of the practice, what are you really getting out of it? Probably just a lot of frustration. In these cases, it would be better to take a more appropriate level class where you can participate more. So how do you know what class level is right for you? That’s an individual decision that only you can make, but one that instructors can help with. If you’re considering trying an advanced level class but have your reservations, speak to the teacher. Ask them what it’s like and if they think you’ll be able to keep up. Also ask them to be honest. Any instructor worth their salt trustworthy instructor will be open to any modifications you need to make, but will also be transparent about their offerings. Most importantly, whatever level class you opt for, make sure it’s the one that feels good for your body, not the one that feeds your ego. Yoga is the journey of the self. If we connect our heart and soul to our practice, it can help us to learn life lessons and to embrace changes in the workplace or elsewhere with a lot more ease. The transition toward the cooler Autumn season allows us to harness our energy and create a calmer, more regular rhythm for optimal health during the upcoming Fall and Winter. Poses like tree and warriors (1,2,3) are wonderful poses to find balance and help us accept all the challenges and changes with grace and dignity. The winds of change blow strong in the fall, but if we can learn to be steady and well grounded like in tree, and also sway with the wind without resisting it, we will be resilient like a warrior. While the tree pose teaches us to get the right balance between steadiness and swaying, the warrior pose teaches us to be ready for everything. What gives strength to the tree against the wind is its roots. While pursuing our dreams, challenging times may come. But if we remain rooted with our yogic values, they will provide us necessary support and strength to power through seasonal shifts. Be bewitched by the beautiful fall foliage as we carve jack-o-lanterns and indulge in apple pie and other seasonal goodies. Cozy up around the bonfire and share ghost stories while toasting s’mores. Feel free to get in the spirit and bring a costume that you can move in if you are feeling festive. Costumes NOT required. This retreat is friendly to all levels, including beginners.
