WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH INTENTIONS IN YOGA? (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Has a yoga teacher ever invited you to set an intention for your practice? It may have happened in any number of classes, but do you really know what “setting an intention” in yoga means?
Let’s break it down. Intentions are about intending to do things. So, what do you intend to do with your yoga practice? Or rather, how do you intend to feel? What’s the goal? What’s the mission? An intention in yoga is a common thread to tie it all together. A sutra, if you will. It’s something to be your “why” or to help you focus when the practice gets challenging or tricky. Intentions bring us back and remind us of the bigger picture. An intention can be a word or a phrase, or even a dedication to a person. Some intentions may look like: Patience. Compassion. Strength. My breath will guide me. I am able. I am powerful. I am present. I am enough and my yoga practice is enough. I practice for my father who can’t. I practice to send healing energy to my friend who needs it. Intentions don’t have to be rooted in action. You know the saying, it’s the thought that counts? That’s about intentions. Follow-through is good and valuable but the purpose of intentions is to send certain thoughts to a place or person who could benefit from them. It’s the intentional output and direction of these thoughts that makes them potent and powerful. Think about that the next time you’re offered up an intention, on or off your mat.
