Solstice – in Latin translates to “the standing still of the sun - the time to honor all that you have planted and cultivated in this past year. Culminating in integrating your lessons, and looking to where space can be created for what you’ll be calling in for the year ahead. With that, a focus on meditation & pranayama [how we control our breathing] can be at the forefront of our practice. Much like our yoga postures, pranayama for the Winter is all about bringing in warmth and brightness, while also practicing techniques that bring the nervous system into a state of ‘rest and digest’. Practice a few rounds of Kappalabhati [breath of fire] in the morning to awaken the senses and release any nasal or sinus congestion, then set a timer for 5-10 minutes of inhaling for 4, holding for 7 and exhaling for 8, which can help cultivate a sense of calm and ease. Pranayama provides a framework for learning the subtle pulsations of prana in the body and the deep stillness between. Seasonal living can help us maintain vibrancy and health throughout the entire year, and as you’ll discover, tuning into the seasons is one of the most intuitive and natural practices we can adopt to be productive.
