SUSTAINABILITY IN YOGA

The concept of sustainability in yoga is nothing new. Many people automatically link the two and think that if you’re a yogi, you must be interested in eco-friendly living and the like. While environmentally consciousness is something we could all strive to be better at, sustainability is about more than recycling and using a compost bin.

Sustainability is about living, being, and practicing for the long haul. It’s about thinking beyond today or tomorrow and asking yourself, “What can I do that will allow me to continue this lifestyle long past the foreseeable future?”

This comes down to one of the Yamas of yoga, Ahimsa. Translating to “non-harming,” ahimsa teaches us to live in a way that minimizes harm to all things and beings. This includes the planet, animals, the environment, those around you, and yourself.

How can you bring ahimsa into your yoga practice in a way that promotes sustainability? How can you weave this concept into your asana practice and blend it into the mental, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional components of yoga as well?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pause when injured. Pushing through an injury often only makes it worse and results in a longer recovery period. While not all injuries require you to stop practicing completely, you may need to modify your asana. Be gentle with yourself and remember that you’re in this for the long haul.
  • Focus on form. Rather than idealizing a sense of accomplishment from getting into a pose, prioritize doing it correctly. This will build the strength and foundational skills you need to not just do that handstand once, by chance, but to do it again and again.
  • Treat others with respect and kindness. Maya Angelou said it best: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” By treating others with compassion, you’ll create a more welcoming environment for all individuals and you’ll develop a reputation of being a friendly pillar of the community. Don’t discount that- such a reputation goes a long way when you practice yoga in a communal setting where you see the same faces multiple times a week.
Consider how you can implement ahimsa into your yoga practice and you’ll find that it instantaneously becomes more sustainable.
