“We have perceptions about our experience, and we judge them: “This is good.” “This is bad.” “This is neutral…” Then we have responses: fear, frustration, anger. We realize that these are just different aspects of the mind. They are not the actual reality.” – Dalai Lama Brahmacharya is the fourth Yama and as explained by Patanjali’s yoga Sutras, this yogic principle of detaching from the small things in life to connect with the infinite yields enormous strength and energy. The literal translation of brahmacharya is “moving into infinity”; “Brahma” means infinity, the Absolute, or big; “charya” means to move or to walk, to live. Many times, it is taught as "celibacy" or moderation, but I like to think of it in a wider sense to keep the mind always engaged in thoughts of Brahma or the supreme consciousness. Dedicated practice of asana, pranayama, and meditation creates a strong foundation for brahmacharya to grow. These practices increase awareness and relax the nervous system, reducing the susceptibility to excitability and arousal and enabling us to better control our responses. These also help to separate your emotions from your thoughts, releasing the control your emotions have over the autonomic nervous system, endocrine glands, and hormonal activities. In this state, our sensual impulses have far less control over us. Meditation also connects us to our true nature of boundless joy and bliss. Remaining in periods of silence on a regular basis can help purify our minds and spirits of any negative impressions. Culture your senses by refraining from meaningless extravagances that deplete your energy and distract your mind - it may excess drinking alcohol or overeating. When you decrease the amount of energy you spend on sensory indulgences and instead turn the mind inward (pratyahara), you replace your dependencies and transient cravings with the experience of inner joy and peace. For yogis seeking the highest potential of yoga, Brahmacharya gives us a chance to unleash our creative energy, to remain soaked in the divine presence, to move into infinity or supreme consciousness (brahman), and thus find a way to fulfill the greatest and finest desire of all—the desire to connect with the unchanging reality. "Your mind has the faculty to analyze everything in the shortest possible time—so short it can’t even be measured. This faculty is called intuition." - Yogi Bhajan Winter Solstice is right around the corner, and with that auspicious time, it brings the end of this year's solar cycle, and an opportunity for a sacred halt in our own lives to embrace stillness and inner reflection.
Solstice – in Latin translates to “the standing still of the sun - the time to honor all that you have planted and cultivated in this past year. Culminating in integrating your lessons, and looking to where space can be created for what you’ll be calling in for the year ahead. With that, a focus on meditation & pranayama [how we control our breathing] can be at the forefront of our practice. Much like our yoga postures, pranayama for the Winter is all about bringing in warmth and brightness, while also practicing techniques that bring the nervous system into a state of ‘rest and digest’. Practice a few rounds of Kappalabhati [breath of fire] in the morning to awaken the senses and release any nasal or sinus congestion, then set a timer for 5-10 minutes of inhaling for 4, holding for 7 and exhaling for 8, which can help cultivate a sense of calm and ease. Pranayama provides a framework for learning the subtle pulsations of prana in the body and the deep stillness between. Seasonal living can help us maintain vibrancy and health throughout the entire year, and as you’ll discover, tuning into the seasons is one of the most intuitive and natural practices we can adopt to be productive. In fact, it has been said that studying ourselves provides all the books we need.” ― Pema Chödrön Svadhyaya translates to “self study,” and it’s the fourth niyama listed in the Eight Limbs of Yoga.
To fully understand the application of this practice of awareness and self examination into your daily life, it’s important to recognize that svadhyaya meant studying the ancient philosophical yoga texts -- reading the texts, reciting them, committing them to memory — embodying those philosophies. So how can you incorporate the practice of svadhyaya while practicing asana [poses]? Listening to your yoga teacher during class is part of the practice, but what happens when a teacher instructs you to move into a pose that feels really uncomfortable or asks you to stay in an asana longer than you can stand? Chances are your internal dialogue kicks into high gear: begging, sometimes demanding, that you provide your body with some relief. If that’s the case for you, then that inner dialogue is what you should be paying attention to if you want to practice svadhyaya. Svadhyaya on the yoga mat means studying the “what”, “how” and “why” to your thoughts and feelings while flowing from pose to pose and then comparing that to your daily life. Consider asking yourself some of these questions:
There's loads of questions and answers you can constantly explore in your practice; notice if it really is an exploration or a judgemental take. Not only can doing this form of self observation improve your asana practice during a yoga class, but gaining this self knowledge can change the way your mind deals with self judgment and expand your capacity for introspection both on and off the mat. When I let go of who I am, I receive what I need.” - Lao Tzu Autumn, a period of transition, is a time for self-nourishment and reflection. The season of autumn invites us to explore an inward and introspective energy both on and off our yoga mats. This is a time of year where we slow down, contemplate, and experience gratitude, abundance, and... LET GO. Detachment of the Spring and Summer and a welcoming of change. Clinging to moments, past or present, will not bring us peace. This is the lesson of Aparigraha [one of the 5 Yamas]. If we are to awaken to the fullness of our being, we must learn to let go. Aparigraha has many translations, but in its purest form, it means detachment and renunciation. We don’t have to take the holiest of paths to learn that the things we call ‘possessions’ can sometimes create a frenzy within us. We need only look around us. We are a ‘storage’ society of boxes, closets, and cupboards, and homes—stuffed full of things we do not use, but still will not part with. It’s not that we shouldn’t enjoy material objects, but somewhere along the way we became hoarders of them. “These things here—they are mine,” we say, and put them all in a box under the bed. The ego constructs our identity and can hold us hostage to our belongings. It’s not just moments, or material objects, that we accumulate, and then cling to furiously. We also build up and hold onto resentments. We acquire and defend opinions and beliefs. We are so conditioned to think in terms of ‘me’ and ‘my’ that we may even believe that other people belong to us. Our partners? They’re “mine,” too. Similarly during our practice, we have an opportunity to observe where we are clinging with our bodies. Are we afraid to open up in backbends? Are we gripping our toes to the mat in our warrior sequence like a bird afraid to fly? Perhaps we are clenching our buttocks during cobra. In all of these moments, we can realize that in order to have a deeper experience, we must be prepared to let go. And so we can come to the end of our practice, ready to sit in our meditation with our open hands, our vessel empty, ready to be filled up. LEANNE MCDERMOTT ADDED TO ON-DEMAND... There's no surprise that telling the truth makes the list & it is called SATYA; the second of the Yamas. It literally translates to honesty and is about being truthful to the world and to yourself, but without forgetting our other goals of being kind and compassionate that we looked at in Ahimsa [non injury/harm]. Sometimes being truthful is not about what you say, but how you say it & how we live it. In order to check if what we want to express is following Satya, we can ask ourselves these four questions: Is it true? Is it REALLY true? Is it necessary? Is it kind/can you say it in a kind way? In our yoga practice, we must be honest with our students when we are teaching and we must be honest to ourselves as practitioners. We can't let our ego take over and tell us we can do a pose when we can't or shouldn't. In the same way, we can't let fear tell us we can't do something if truthfully we can. These are all things to consider when practicing - decide what is the version of the practice that is truthfully right for you. The benefits of SATYA? Healthier relationships with others and yourself. A clear conscience. Trust in yourself. Inspires others. The benefits of continuously choosing the truth and bringing satya into your yoga practice will benefit so many aspects of your life it will be truly worth it! INTRODUCING... PAYMENT: VENMO -- @Vicyasa Paypal -- Victor@YogawithVictor.com NAMASTE, Victor Cotto www.YogaWithVictor.com Instagram: CottoVic Facebook: Yoga With Victor - Vicyasa™ "Comparison is the thief of joy." —Theodore Roosevelt The quote above is very relevant in association with our yoga practice. I'd like to add that "Perfectionism" is also the thief of joy. Neither comparing nor the word perfect have any place in any meditation or yoga practice.
Too often, students feel self-imposed or outwardly pressured to advance in their poses; social media & studio culture, our upbringing, all influence and can sabotage our healthy yoga lifestyle. These pressures can lead to burnout, injury, and competitiveness—which is not the part of the construct of yoga. Nor is that a feature of any ancient scriptures or texts. That mode of practice creates suffering and can stunt our imagination and excitement for the practice as yoga practitioners. Of course, progressing in the practice of asana is beautiful too - but only healthy when that progress includes peace, mindfulness, awareness and inner knowing. This practice is one of joy. It’s meant to teach us to live up to our full potential. Not to be "perfect" or compare yourself to someone else, or to unhealthy standards not fitting your present. It’s a journey that we choose to embark on. Life is already a wild ride... so arrive on your mat this Fall and allow your breath, your practice, and the deep roots of yoga support you to feel more grounded and connected to the beauty that is you. The term literally means purity, cleanliness and clearness. It refers to purity of mind, speech and body.
The habits we pick up throughout life off the mat may or may not serve us, and the idea of our practice is to recognise what doesn’t help us and what does, coming towards a state in which everything we do aids us towards being happier, healthier and more awake and aware in life. If we take our ‘bad’ habits on to the mat with us, then our practice becomes a lot harder, we have to sift through the ‘impurities’ or negativity we’ve picked up before reaping the benefits of Yoga. Impurities we try to shed can be mental & physical. Practicing cleanliness of body, mind, spirit and surroundings will help direct us towards a pure and positive life. Some ways to "cleanse": Neti - nasal cleansing Dhauti - cleansing of digestive tract Nauli - abdominal massage Bhasti - colon cleansing Kappalabhati - breath of fire Our environment can reflect our state of mind. You’ll probably identify with the fact that when our bedrooms or homes are messy, our minds can often feel a little messy and cluttered too. When we’re surrounded by a clean environment however, with clear surfaces, possessions that we need – and not possessions we’ve hoarded over the years and can’t bear to get rid of – and the sense of having space to breathe, then we’re likely to feel a whole lot better and clearer in our minds. Not only does having a clean place to practice in, and a clean mat to practise on feel good, it shows a sign of respect towards our practice. ON-DEMAND OPTIONS GALORE... Finding peace does not necessarily mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace implies to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart.
You know how we try to turn down the volume on some background music when we need to think a lil' more clearly about something complicated or confusing that we need to focus more on? The same is true for your life. What's the noise you need to cut out to concentrate? That’s the noise in your head – the busy, worried thoughts, plans, emotional or mental clinging screaming over your better judgment. Turning down the "noise" refocuses your mind and offers you clarity when you need it most. You don’t really think about how or why this makes such a huge difference, you just know that it does. How do we apply the strategy to address all the other noise in your life, starting with the noise in your head? Some people have affirmations, or mantras, or convictions, but in any case these daily reminders keep you on track by keeping peaceful, productive thoughts at the top of your mind, even when life gets noisy. Either at the start of the day, at the onset of your practice or regularly throughout the day, turn down the noise by tuning into your heart. ON-DEMAND OPTIONS GALORE... NEW CLASSES Over the next few weeks, you'll see an update into many of the offerings we have available 24/7 for our unlimited subscribers. We hear it in class, we say it post-class, but do we know what it means? Namaste is an ancient Sanskrit word with Hindu roots that dates all the way back to the Vedic period. It’s an expression that has been used for thousands of years and while Namaste has many different translations and uses, it is above all an expression of respect. Namaste is a declaration of appreciation, a non-contact expression and respect towards another person, entity or deity. It can be used as a hello greeting and even as a goodbye, so you might say Namaste upon meeting someone, or before parting ways. It is derived from two key Sanskrit words: Namah: bow, adoration, salutation Te: to you Are you ready to honor yourself and others with a Namaste greeting, but you’re not sure how to express it correctly? The good news: there is no ‘right’ way to say Namaste, as long as it is being used as an expression of reverence, respect and gratitude. It is a three-syllable word that is pronounced naah – muh – stay. Just like chanting Om, you may or may not feel comfortable bowing and saying Namaste at the end of a yoga class. Only you can decide if incorporating Namaste into your practice and interactions with others makes sense. You can most certainly convey the intention behind Namaste without ever speaking the word, if you so choose. Just like your asana practice, honor yourself, and meet yourself where you are. If and when you’re ready to say Namaste, you’ll know. LULULEMON GIVEAWAYS... This week, we'll be giving away Lululemon gifts during in-class contests.
