THE POWER OF A YOGA COMMUNITY “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Way back when, people used to come together and form communities based on churches, synagogues, temples, or other forms of religion. That still exists, but the more secular world in which we live has more or less phased that congruence out of mainstream society. It's harder to find your community these days. One of the very special aspects of yoga is the community it can create.
Finding like-minded people who think the way you do and share similar values can be challenging; yoga makes it a little easier. The physical practice may be what brings many of us to the mat, but time and time again, you'll see the same faces show up to in-studio classes for more than just the asana. Perhaps it's because they know their favorite teacher will be instructing or maybe the time just works well for their schedule. These patterns of people begin to foster a sense of community that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Sweating, breathing, moving, laughing, falling, trying, and falling again breeds community. Sharing knowing smiles when the teacher calls out "double chaturanga!" builds connections. Letting out a collective lion's breath after practicing "Ujjayi" pranayama for 55 minutes is both satisfying and unifying, especially when everyone does it together. There is true power in community. In fact, some might say that the yoga community itself is a higher power. Yoga may just be the vehicle we need to access it. "Comparison is the thief of joy." —Theodore Roosevelt The quote above is very relevant in association with our yoga practice. I'd like to add that "Perfectionism" is also the thief of joy. Neither comparing nor the word perfect have any place in any meditation or yoga practice.
Too often, students feel self-imposed or outwardly pressured to advance in their poses; social media & studio culture, our upbringing, all influence and can sabotage our healthy yoga lifestyle. These pressures can lead to burnout, injury, and competitiveness—which is not the part of the construct of yoga. Nor is that a feature of any ancient scriptures or texts. That mode of practice creates suffering and can stunt our imagination and excitement for the practice as yoga practitioners. Of course, progressing in the practice of asana is beautiful too - but only healthy when that progress includes peace, mindfulness, awareness and inner knowing. This practice is one of joy. It’s meant to teach us to live up to our full potential. Not to be "perfect" or compare yourself to someone else, or to unhealthy standards not fitting your present. It’s a journey that we choose to embark on. Life is already a wild ride... so arrive on your mat this Fall and allow your breath, your practice, and the deep roots of yoga support you to feel more grounded and connected to the beauty that is you. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) When it comes to matters of mat placement, there’s a general consensus among most yogis: we all have a favorite spot. Whether it’s the front and center or the coveted back corner, our go-to spots are precious. Ask a fellow yogi why a spot is their favorite and some might have an answer. I don’t want anyone looking at me; I need to see what other people are doing; I prefer to be by the window. Others might say I don’t really know; I just like it here. While a variety of factors are at play, where you put your mat may say something about your mentality. YogaJournal recently published an article looking to unpack the reasoning behind mat placement in the yoga room. What they found was that where you put your mat may say more about you than you realized.
THE FRONT Yogis who march to the front of the room typically feel uninhibited by others in the space. They tend to be confident in their practice and trust that they can rely on the teacher’s verbal cuing as well as their own experience. Another reason some yogis opt for the front row is to eliminate comparison. Sure, fellow yogis are beside you but the constant reminder of what others’ asana looks like is quite literally out of sight…and therefore, perhaps out of mind. Many find that being in the front reduces distractions and enhances their ability to dive inward. THE BACK Newcomers, observers, or those with a bit less confidence in their physical practice tend to gravitate towards the back of the room. This makes sense, especially if coming to yoga feels outside the norm to begin with. On the flip side, there may be a certain sense of confidence to setting up in the back. The back row bunch don’t need others to see how they’re flowing; they are secure in the poses they choose to practice. Additionally, being in the back may encourage some yogis to try out new poses they would otherwise avoid. The perception of fewer eyes on them may help practitioners experiment in unexpected ways. THE MIDDLE Middle-of-the-room yogis make up the majority of the class. Left to take in all the sights, sounds, and sweat of their surroundings, these practitioners are immersed in it all. The energy in the middle of the room tends to be that of the middle of a dance floor. Neither a follower nor a leader in this sense, middle-room yogis embrace the pack. These yogis tend to trust their practices, especially if they’re doing inversions or arm balances in the center of the room. Still, they tend to appreciate the inspiration that is all around them and may use it to challenge themselves. THE OUTLIERS Of course, there will always be those yoga rebels who throw caution to the wind and will set up wherever there’s an open rectangle. May we all aspire to be like these yogis, as they are able to practice true mental flexibility, an area in which we could all grow. Whether in the front, middle, back, or off to the side, the next time you roll out your mat, know that wherever you place it is exactly where you’re supposed to be. WRONG OF YOGA POSES“Everything you’re sure is right can be wrong in another place.”- Barbara Kingsolver, Author (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) The other day I found myself adjustring a student in their chaturanga. Their elbows remained wide as they lowered down, as one might do in a traditional push-up. I offered a "hug your elbows in towards the midline" cue until they got it, but doing so gave me pause. This was the way I had always been taught to do chaturanga, but so what? Was there really a right vs. wrong way to do it? For that matter, is there always a right vs. wrong way to do any pose? To back up a bit, there are indeed correct and incorrect forms of alignment. After all, yoga isn't a free-for- all. There are right and wrong ways to do poses, but that doesn't mean deviation is not allowed or even encouraged. The correct way to do a pose is the way that will keep you safe and promote a sustainable practice for the long term. Let's take chaturanga, for example. We hug our elbows in to reduce the load on our shoulders. We shift forward before we bend 90 degrees to protect the rotator cuffs. We keep our lower bellies engaged and our entire cores activated to protect the low back. It's not just about aesthetics – there is a visual component to it, but the purpose is for safety and strength. Now let's take another pose, like Warrior one.Traditionally taught with narrow feet, this pose can easily lead to one collapsing into their lower back or forcing an unnatural heel to heel alignment. The original yogis may have stood with a narrower stance when they first practiced it back in the day, but now it is quite common to see people widen their feet, sometimes even mat's width. Is that still Warrior one? Is it correct? It sure is! As long as the back heel is grounded at a 45 degree angle and the front knee is bending towards 90 degrees; as long as the front hip is drawing back and the back hip is drawing forward, it's still Warrior one. Yoga isn't about being 100% correct all the time. Yes, there are rules, guidelines, parameters...whatever you want to call them. But there is also wiggle room within those rules. I am not even the mind.” - Sadhguru (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever thought to yourself, “Am I a yogi?” It might seem like a loaded question. What constitutes calling yourself a yogi? What do you have to do to earn that title? Is someone who practices yoga once a week a yogi? Do you have to practice every day to qualify? Do you have to sit for hours in silence and abide by all of the yogic principles in order to be worthy?
The answer is that you have to define it for yourself. One could practice asana every single day, know the Bhagavad Gita inside and out, have memorized all the yamas and the niyamas... but if they get rattled every time a beginner comes to class, or if they get irritated when things aren't done their way, are they a yogi? Perhaps not yet. To be a yogi is to practice unity. To practice yoga is to yolk, to unite; uniting body, mind, and breath with your inner spirit. How this looks could change each day. Some days you may be more yogic than others. There is no definite answer to the question of, “Am I a yogi?” Instead, see it as an opportunity for thought. Am I a yogi? Well, do you want to be one? If so and if you feel that you're not one yet, what steps can you take to become one? Maybe it's practicing a bit more kindness towards others on a daily basis. Maybe it's fostering a sense of community within your yoga studio. Maybe it's practicing asana more often. With this question, don't stress. Just get curious. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Fall is the season of transition & change... If we observe & spend time with nature during this beautiful season, it can teach us life-transforming lessons of acceptance, balance, letting go, surrender & reset. If we can adopt these in times of change, the change will be enjoyable. Yoga is the journey of the self. If we connect our heart and soul to our practice, it can help us to learn these life lessons and to embrace changes with a lot more ease. ACCEPT CHANGE AND IMPERMANENCE: The changing fall foliage leaves us wonderstruck, reminding us that change is the nature of life and change is beautiful. Admiring the changing leaves helps us be open to the surprises of nature and the inevitable twists and turns in our life. It also means having faith that some supreme power always protects us in all the transitions of life. LET GO AND SURRENDER: The equal division of day and night also reflects autumn’s lesson to relinquish and to harvest. Autumn is a season that invites us to consider releasing and surrendering what no longer serves us or what gets in the way of being present to the sacredness of each moment. It is the time to reflect and surrender our masks and become more truly who we already are. As the leaves change their shades to unfold their true colors, let us consider changing the things, habits, beliefs, and attitudes that cover our true nature. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Beautify your inner world with love light and compassion. Life will be beautiful.” Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that means "non-violence" and it is the foundation of all yogic philosophy. Defined as not having any desire to harm anyone or anything, either physically or psychologically, including ourselves when moving mindfully on our mat. It is a process of self-control, self-awareness and awareness of everything that is around you. If you harm someone intentionally, even when it is just in thought, you have lost control of your mind and you are in imbalance with yourself. Violence means moving away from your true nature and practicing ahimsa simply means coming closer to who you really are. As we begin to wind down this Summer, bring to light the practice of non-violence beyond the mat. Take note on how you feel when approaching your asana practice and invite more meaningful movement and process self control and be completely aware of what serves you in the moment as we move into the Fall months. To balance the heat-waves and energy harnessed by the summer season, aim to cultivate the opposite environment on the inside of the body — cool and calm. During this time of year, a good counter for high energy would be to create a lunar current within the body by focusing on activities and foods that are cooling. This approach will nourish your system and help increase your energy levels. Moon Salutations, Sun salutations (with walk forwards), supported backbends, legs up a wall to close practice, wide legged forward folds and floor twists all send a calming wave through the nervous system and serve the body’s attempts to self-regulate. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is yoga meditation?” There's good news for you: you’re already on the right path. Some people wonder if they need to dedicate a separate period of time to meditation aside from their physical asana practice. Others say yoga is enough. Which one is it: is yoga in and of itself meditation? The answer is that it depends. Yoga can be a form of moving meditation. When you check out of your thinking mind (for some of us, that's the overthinking mind), and tap into the single-pointed focus of breath and movement, yoga can certainly be a meditation. Some people are able to do this in a class setting while others are only able to achieve it in their home practice. Others still can't quite turn off the mental gymnastics that occur on an ongoing basis no matter how many vinyasas they do. There's nothing wrong with that, but for these people, a separate meditation practice may be beneficial. Questions to ask yourself as to whether your yoga practice is a meditation: - Am I able to put my to-do list on pause while I practice? - Am I constantly thinking about other things during yoga? - Do I feel focused while I'm in class? - Is my practice filled with judgment and evaluation? - Am I present when I practice? - What is the quality of my breath like? Asking yourself these questions may help you determine whether the yoga that you practice is serving as a form of moving meditation or if you would benefit from an extra 5 minutes of breathwork, transcendental meditation (TM), a meditation circle, or something else entirely. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Do you know why you practice yoga? You might; you might not. The reasons are plentiful. Some people practice for a very clear cut reason, such as to help recover from an injury or to stretch out their muscles. Others seek out a calming practice that helps quiet the mind by gently moving the body. There’s no correct answer, but it is good to ask: why do you practice yoga? Is it to get stronger? Is it to change your body? Is it to reconnect with your body? Is it to take a designated break from the rest of your day? Despite the communal way in which it is practiced, yoga is personal and everyone’s why is personal to them. Some reasons are purely aesthetic; others are spiritual; others still are a mix of both, and then some. As mentioned above, there is no right reason to practice yoga. Sure, we may have all heard the exasperated yogi stammer, “That’s not why you should practice yoga!” in a frustrated attempt to make a novice “get” it. But the truth is that there is no correct reason to come to the mat. It matters less why you came; it matters more why you stay. Yoga may be practiced solo or with others but in its true essence, it is an exploration of the Self. The concept of svadhyaya is self-study, meaning that yoga is an opportunity to learn more about who you are at your core. Moving forward, each time you roll out your mat, consider it an invitation to practice self-study and ask yourself, "Why am I practicing yoga today?" This could change every time or it could remain constant. Perhaps it is to learn a little more about you. GIVEAWAY TIME...
