AM I A YOGI? “I am not the body. I am not even the mind.” - Sadhguru (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever thought to yourself, “Am I a yogi?” It might seem like a loaded question. What constitutes calling yourself a yogi? What do you have to do to earn that title? Is someone who practices yoga once a week a yogi? Do you have to practice every day to qualify? Do you have to sit for hours in silence and abide by all of the yogic principles in order to be worthy?
The answer is that you have to define it for yourself. One could practice asana every single day, know the Bhagavad Gita inside and out, have memorized all the yamas and the niyamas... but if they get rattled every time a beginner comes to class, or if they get irritated when things aren't done their way, are they a yogi? Perhaps not yet. To be a yogi is to practice unity. To practice yoga is to yolk, to unite; uniting body, mind, and breath with your inner spirit. How this looks could change each day. Some days you may be more yogic than others. There is no definite answer to the question of, “Am I a yogi?” Instead, see it as an opportunity for thought. Am I a yogi? Well, do you want to be one? If so and if you feel that you're not one yet, what steps can you take to become one? Maybe it's practicing a bit more kindness towards others on a daily basis. Maybe it's fostering a sense of community within your yoga studio. Maybe it's practicing asana more often. With this question, don't stress. Just get curious. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! “Beautify your inner dialogue. Beautify your inner world with love light and compassion. Life will be beautiful.” Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that means "non-violence" and it is the foundation of all yogic philosophy. Defined as not having any desire to harm anyone or anything, either physically or psychologically, including ourselves when moving mindfully on our mat. It is a process of self-control, self-awareness and awareness of everything that is around you. If you harm someone intentionally, even when it is just in thought, you have lost control of your mind and you are in imbalance with yourself. Violence means moving away from your true nature and practicing ahimsa simply means coming closer to who you really are. As we begin to wind down this Summer, bring to light the practice of non-violence beyond the mat. Take note on how you feel when approaching your asana practice and invite more meaningful movement and process self control and be completely aware of what serves you in the moment as we move into the Fall months. To balance the heat-waves and energy harnessed by the summer season, aim to cultivate the opposite environment on the inside of the body — cool and calm. During this time of year, a good counter for high energy would be to create a lunar current within the body by focusing on activities and foods that are cooling. This approach will nourish your system and help increase your energy levels. Moon Salutations, Sun salutations (with walk forwards), supported backbends, legs up a wall to close practice, wide legged forward folds and floor twists all send a calming wave through the nervous system and serve the body’s attempts to self-regulate. Hint: a lil' mint essential oil sprinkled on the mat provides a exhiliating cooling effect too. PRIVATES: ONE-TO-ONE WORK! Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is yoga meditation?” There's good news for you: you’re already on the right path. Some people wonder if they need to dedicate a separate period of time to meditation aside from their physical asana practice. Others say yoga is enough. Which one is it: is yoga in and of itself meditation? The answer is that it depends. Yoga can be a form of moving meditation. When you check out of your thinking mind (for some of us, that's the overthinking mind), and tap into the single-pointed focus of breath and movement, yoga can certainly be a meditation. Some people are able to do this in a class setting while others are only able to achieve it in their home practice. Others still can't quite turn off the mental gymnastics that occur on an ongoing basis no matter how many vinyasas they do. There's nothing wrong with that, but for these people, a separate meditation practice may be beneficial. Questions to ask yourself as to whether your yoga practice is a meditation: - Am I able to put my to-do list on pause while I practice? - Am I constantly thinking about other things during yoga? - Do I feel focused while I'm in class? - Is my practice filled with judgment and evaluation? - Am I present when I practice? - What is the quality of my breath like? Asking yourself these questions may help you determine whether the yoga that you practice is serving as a form of moving meditation or if you would benefit from an extra 5 minutes of breathwork, transcendental meditation (TM), a meditation circle, or something else entirely. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Do you know why you practice yoga? You might; you might not. The reasons are plentiful. Some people practice for a very clear cut reason, such as to help recover from an injury or to stretch out their muscles. Others seek out a calming practice that helps quiet the mind by gently moving the body. There’s no correct answer, but it is good to ask: why do you practice yoga? Is it to get stronger? Is it to change your body? Is it to reconnect with your body? Is it to take a designated break from the rest of your day? Despite the communal way in which it is practiced, yoga is personal and everyone’s why is personal to them. Some reasons are purely aesthetic; others are spiritual; others still are a mix of both, and then some. As mentioned above, there is no right reason to practice yoga. Sure, we may have all heard the exasperated yogi stammer, “That’s not why you should practice yoga!” in a frustrated attempt to make a novice “get” it. But the truth is that there is no correct reason to come to the mat. It matters less why you came; it matters more why you stay. Yoga may be practiced solo or with others but in its true essence, it is an exploration of the Self. The concept of svadhyaya is self-study, meaning that yoga is an opportunity to learn more about who you are at your core. Moving forward, each time you roll out your mat, consider it an invitation to practice self-study and ask yourself, "Why am I practicing yoga today?" This could change every time or it could remain constant. Perhaps it is to learn a little more about you. GIVEAWAY TIME... Covey Leading a properly highly skilled power yoga class will make students feel like you hardly have to think at all. The teacher breathes with you, speaks clearly, and gives you a general feeling of ease, guiding you through a varying of challenging poses, seamless sequences all while also supporting you. In time, you begin to understand and feel how each pose is operating in your body, what muscles are being stretched or strengthened. You begin to pay attention to the way your body is moving on a daily basis both in and out of class. And you begin to think more critically about how to approach a pose, and possibly even how to approach life. Listening to one’s body, one’s mind, and one’s spirit comes with practice. And in the class setting it begins with listening to verbal prompts. I may have my own way of coming into a pose, but when I’m in a class I practice listening to the teacher for new ways at arriving at a particular pose because I want to know and feel the difference. I want to be open to learning new ways of operating in my body, of moving my body in this world, and of simply being. Listening, in the moment, to step by step instruction improves our ability to pay attention. Often in class, we are asked to let go of our thoughts, but this does not mean we stop thinking. Rather our thinking changes from things we’ve done or want to do, to the thing we are doing. We become present, paying attention to precisely what is happening in the moment. Our ears are open, our mind is exactly where our body is, and as we, through practice, reach that place of yoga– union between mind, body, and spirit– we gain a clearer understanding of our intention... the now moment. At the end of a practice session are you feeling relaxed and invigorated or overly exhausted?
Some people can take to yoga easily, while others may struggle for an entire lifetime to achieve the same. What's important to remember is when we force our body into positions that it isn’t ready for, chances for injury increase. It doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t attempt poses that are challenging or complex. This is when body awareness, mindfulness and self love has to be integrated into yoga. Make sure to practice with care and awareness, listening to any signs from your body. Remember, you’re the only one who can really judge whether or not you’re overexerting, so better pay attention to any nudging sensations that may arise. Even the most experienced gurus will tell you that they are still learning and are struggling in one way or another. Yoga is a lifelong learning process. Those who claim they are already enlightened may be fooling themselves and others. A truly enlightened master will never make such claims. Am I just stretching or practicing yoga? Both may have the same aims, it is also possible that they have very different goals. For instance, stretching can help you recover from an injury, become more flexible, improve your athletic performance, or target a particular problem area. In contrast, whereas yoga is often for flexibility and focus, it can also be for strength, posture, and balance among many other mental and spiritual benefits. Whether you are just starting out in your practice or wish to master advanced postures, the best advice would be: practice yoga & stretch to your heart’s content, while keeping in mind that you want to feel good at the end of your practice – not exhausted. And most importantly, knowing that the work you put into yoga or stretching has added to your day and not undermined the quality of your life. GIVEAWAY TIME... A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” – Ada Louise Huxtable The summer solstice has been celebrated by festivals/rituals and it has become customary in yoga classes to perform sun salutation type sequences at this time of the year.
Gestures of honoring and paying reverence to the natural world are part of a yoga practice that encourages us to appreciate and feel more connected to the rhythms of life. In a world of uncertainty, a feeling of connection to the changing seasons can bring great comfort. The Sun is a force essential to all life on earth. In one way or another, every living being is dependent on the Sun for life. Consider your breathing; your breath nourishes you as the Sun nourishes the trees, who are vital to our exchange of life, creating the air you breathe. If you consider food, you’ll find the same is true, as the Sun nourishes the plants that make up most (if not all) of the human diet. The Sun is important in many other ways as well, serving as the basis for time itself (days, years, calendars), as well as dictating the role of the seasons, growing cycles, and climates we find ourselves in. But why 108 sun salutes? This is one of the key astrological moments of the year. This sacred number is vital... we have 108 nadis (energy channels in the body) that merge in the heart chakra, there are 9 traditional planets and 12 zodiac signs. 9 x 12 = 108, the Matrika Malini (Sanskrit alphabet) has 54 letters, each with a masculine and feminine vibration. 54 + 54 = 108, traditional malas (meditation beads) have 108 beads, there are 108 names for god in yoga. So if 108 sun salutes are out of reach, you can also simply practice 9 salutations. There are 12 postures in a sun salute, and 9 x 12 = 108. Lets super charge not only our solstice, but our entire summer season! $150 UNLIMITED ALL SUMMER Want yoga for the next 60 days at a discounted price? $2.50 a day to invest in yourself and your yoga practice. Despite years of regular weekly lessons, practitioners may not be able to draw their attention inwards and one reason sometimes is due to an emphasis on competitive achievement. People’s competitive sides often prevent the mind from directing inward. This competitive way of directing attention outwardly during yoga lessons does not lead into deep practices. Prematurely focusing on advanced postures is another reason for not tapping into higher states of yoga. Many years ago, students did not have access to the numerous pictures of complex yoga postures that are seen scattered across the internet. One method of teaching had the teacher only demonstrating the next and more advanced posture when the aspirant was ready to receive the new knowledge. In such schools, beginners did not practice with or even look into advanced classes. In this manner the student remained blank, their attention focused on a present practice and not future possibilities. The direction the student took was decided by the teacher, based on the innate talent of the student. Regardless of where you are in your practice, yoga will teach you to appreciate your body and its abilities. It’s common to start yoga and think you should immediately be able to do an inversion or arm balance and when you can’t - we beat ourselves up for it. It doesn’t take long, however, before the essence of yoga grabs you and you become aware of the negative self-talk and find a way to switch it off. The more you turn up and tune in, the easier this gets. The more you come to see your body in a different light and realise that it is truly amazing. We then cherish what we can do, what we can accomplish and not look at ourselves with judgement, but with a love that only comes through when we embrace a practice that is devoted and adoring the self. Few things are so pressing that they cannot wait for a moment of breath.” - T.K.V. Desikachar (This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) It’s no secret that we live in a world in which more is considered better. The #nodaysoff hashtag may have popped up on your Instagram feed, potentially causing you to fall into the “rest is for the weary” lie of a mindset. We’ve been conditioned to believe that pushing through is always preferred, but when we take a step back and reflect on what is right for us in our bodies, the truth is that this might not be the case.
Ask yourself: should I practice or should I pause? This can be asked before you roll out your mat or in the middle of a yoga class. Should I practice this pose, this sun salutation, this sequence…or should I pause? Yoga is not about going through the motions without assessing what you need. Instead, perhaps the real yoga begins when we step away from the mat for a day or two. Pausing may give your physical body and your intellectual mind a chance to rinse off so when you return to your mat, it is with a fresh and rejuvenated perspective. Sometimes a day away is all you need to come back with an even more strongly reignited fire for your love of the practice. Signs it may be time to pause:
The wisest yogi is the one who knows when to practice and when to pause. SALE... $2.58 A DAY TO INVEST YOUR MIND/BODY Get multiple months of LIVE & On-demand yoga... for $155!
