Is yoga meditation?“When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a candle in a windless place” —Bhagavad Gita (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Is yoga meditation?” There's good news for you: you’re already on the right path. Some people wonder if they need to dedicate a separate period of time to meditation aside from their physical asana practice. Others say yoga is enough. Which one is it: is yoga in and of itself meditation? The answer is that it depends. Yoga can be a form of moving meditation. When you check out of your thinking mind (for some of us, that's the overthinking mind), and tap into the single-pointed focus of breath and movement, yoga can certainly be a meditation. Some people are able to do this in a class setting while others are only able to achieve it in their home practice. Others still can't quite turn off the mental gymnastics that occur on an ongoing basis no matter how many vinyasas they do. There's nothing wrong with that, but for these people, a separate meditation practice may be beneficial. Questions to ask yourself as to whether your yoga practice is a meditation: - Am I able to put my to-do list on pause while I practice? - Am I constantly thinking about other things during yoga? - Do I feel focused while I'm in class? - Is my practice filled with judgment and evaluation? - Am I present when I practice? - What is the quality of my breath like? Asking yourself these questions may help you determine whether the yoga that you practice is serving as a form of moving meditation or if you would benefit from an extra 5 minutes of breathwork, transcendental meditation (TM), a meditation circle, or something else entirely. Why do you practice yoga? “You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself.” - Dale Carnegie (This week's newsletter was composed by our dynamic on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Do you know why you practice yoga? You might; you might not. The reasons are plentiful. Some people practice for a very clear cut reason, such as to help recover from an injury or to stretch out their muscles. Others seek out a calming practice that helps quiet the mind by gently moving the body. There’s no correct answer, but it is good to ask: why do you practice yoga? Is it to get stronger? Is it to change your body? Is it to reconnect with your body? Is it to take a designated break from the rest of your day? Despite the communal way in which it is practiced, yoga is personal and everyone’s why is personal to them. Some reasons are purely aesthetic; others are spiritual; others still are a mix of both, and then some. As mentioned above, there is no right reason to practice yoga. Sure, we may have all heard the exasperated yogi stammer, “That’s not why you should practice yoga!” in a frustrated attempt to make a novice “get” it. But the truth is that there is no correct reason to come to the mat. It matters less why you came; it matters more why you stay. Yoga may be practiced solo or with others but in its true essence, it is an exploration of the Self. The concept of svadhyaya is self-study, meaning that yoga is an opportunity to learn more about who you are at your core. Moving forward, each time you roll out your mat, consider it an invitation to practice self-study and ask yourself, "Why am I practicing yoga today?" This could change every time or it could remain constant. Perhaps it is to learn a little more about you. GIVEAWAY TIME... Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Do you know the right way to teach yoga? How about practicing it? Sorry to disappoint, but these are trick questions: there is no right way to teach or practice yoga!
Some instructors teach yoga by demonstrating the entire class. Others walk around and let their verbal cues guide the practice. One is not more correct than the other but as a student, it's important to ask yourself: do I need the demo? There are so many ways to benefit from a yoga practice, whether online or in studio with fellow yogis. Regardless of where or how you practice, it's important to ask yourself if you really need a demo or if you're relying on it simply because it's there. Having a teacher demonstrate challenging poses can be helpful and valuable, especially if you've never done the pose before and you're learning it for the first time. Additionally, it's great to use demos to check for form and alignment. On the other hand, it's equally important to ask yourself if you really need the guidance or if you're watching the instructor out of habit. At that point, it may be time to turn off what you always do and tap into your intuition. Questions to ask yourself when it comes to taking a yoga class with vs. without demos: - Do I really need the demonstration or am I just used to it? - Do I trust myself enough to know how to come into these poses on my own? - Is the teacher giving clear, accurate cuing? If so, I may not need to watch them the entire time. In these cases, perhaps your breath can be your guide. Consider these questions the next time you take a class (with or without a teacher's demonstrations). It may just upgrade your entire experience and show you how advanced of a yogi you truly are. $150 UNLIMITED ALL SUMMER Want yoga for the next 59 days at a discounted price? $2.54 a day to invest in yourself and your yoga practice. Yoga is a healing art, a medicine that helps us balance nature's cycles. However, like any medicine, if not taken responsibly, it can do more harm than good. As we adapt to the hot season by not wearing heavier garments, we can adapt our Yoga practice too, during the fiery days of summer. Make sure that you are well hydrated before you unroll your mat. Wear something light and that is loving to our skin. Our pores are more open when hot and sweaty and we don’t want to invite the chemicals from textile dyes into our bloodstream. It is also important to prepare your practice space – air it out before you begin and make sure it’s as cool as it can be without using air conditioning. Choose a slower pace. If you feel a shortness of breath, slow down or relax in child's pose. Observe your breath. It has the power of cooling the body down when needed. Exhale through the mouth three times whenever you feel the need to during the practice; this has a calming, cooling and grounding effect. Be mindful about choosing a longer restorative sequence at the end of your practice. Twists are good to detox but choose the ones that are not too challenging as these will again build heat in the body. If you like to work your core... choose wisely! As we finish with style and grace, avoid long sirsasana [headstand]. Instead, stay longer with your legs up against a wall to release that summer heaviness. If you practice sitali pranayama, do three breaths to cool down before savasana. A longer savasana - 5/10 minutes at least - allowing the body to cool and soften is always a way to love yourself on the mat. $200 UNLIMITED ALL SUMMER Want yoga for the next 87 days at a discounted price? The #nodaysoff hashtag may have popped up on your Instagram feed, potentially causing you to fall into the “rest is for the weary” lie of a mindset. We’ve been conditioned to believe that pushing through is always preferred, but when we take a step back and reflect on what is right for us in our bodies, the truth is that this might not be the case.
Ask yourself: should I practice or should I pause? This can be asked before you roll out your mat or in the middle of a yoga class. Should I practice this pose, this sun salutation, this sequence…or should I pause? Yoga is not about going through the motions without assessing what you need. Instead, perhaps the real yoga begins when we step away from the mat for a day or two. Pausing may give your physical body and your intellectual mind a chance to rinse off so when you return to your mat, it is with a fresh and rejuvenated perspective. Sometimes a day away is all you need to come back with an even more strongly reignited fire for your love of the practice. Signs it may be time to pause:

They help cleanse and remove built-up residue in the mind and body to release what is no longer needed and make room for growth and expansion.
While yoga always places a high value on purification of body and mind, spring is especially focused on release. (This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Have you ever stopped to think about whether the type of yoga you’re practicing really serves you? Or if there is another form that might work better for you on a different day, at a different time, or in a different circumstance?
Yoga comes in a multitude of varieties. While hatha yoga may be the oldest to date, many other forms have branched off from the original version to bring us the current buffet of options we enjoy today. Popular styles include hatha, vinyasa, Iyengar, bikram, kundalini, and yin, but the list doesn’t stop there. The modern world in which we live has new forms of the practice popping up everywhere. With so much variety, why just stick to one? The different lineages of yoga each serve their own unique purpose. Some, like vinyasa, are more geared towards flexibility, while others such as hatha, focus more on breath work. Yin yoga, for example, prioritizes long holds to get deep into the fascia. The beauty of knowing about the different forms of yoga is that you can choose what’s right for you based on your mood, your day, and your position in life. The way we feel varies day to day; similarly, the type of yoga we practice can as well. When deciding the type of yoga that is right for you, consider the following questions: What do you want to get out of it? Do you need more grounding? Do you need more energy? Do you need more structure? (ashtanga). Do you need more freedom? (vinyasa). Perhaps you need to sit still. That, too, is yoga in its most fundamental sense. The Vicyasa™ platform offers several styles and levels of yoga, available for practitioners of all abilities. Find the one that speaks to you. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” -Eleanor Brownn From physical, to mental, to emotional well being, the ancient practice of Yoga has contributed to the overall wellness of human life. Every time we feel like we are losing our grip on our physical or emotional health, yoga can come to the rescue and inspire us in different ways. There is no doubt that yoga is one of the finest paths to remain happy and refreshed in life. Another is... time on the beach and a time out from the day-to-day grind.

Brown, poet (This week's newsletter was composed by our wonderful on-demand teacher and full time writer Elinor Cohen. Check out her Instagram HERE and her amazingly empowering advanced & intermediate sessions on our on-demand archives.) Equal parts day and night mark the Spring Equinox. Also referred to as the Vernal Equinox, this day marks the official start of spring! This season is seen by many as a time of renewal and transformation. The flowers that have been growing underground can finally begin to bloom, and with that comes the opportunity for planning and progress.
In Latin, the word “vernal” translates to new and fresh. How do we incorporate this into our yoga practice? Perhaps it means refinding your yoga practice. If time on your mat hasn’t been as frequent (read: nonexistent for some) throughout the winter months, the Spring Equinox could be the perfect opportunity to start anew with a refreshed appreciation for all that your body and mind can do. Those who have been regularly practicing may consider incorporating Kapha qualities into your asana. Kapha is the Ayurvedic dosha most closely linked to spring. Consider leaning into the qualities of moistness and abundance by practicing hot yoga, spending time in a sauna or steam room, and incorporating elements of grounding into your postures. Other ways to welcome in spring:
Consider this your permission slip to stop and smell the roses…as well as the tulips, daisies, and lilies. Now is the time to enjoy all the abundance that spring is sure to bring. CHECK OUT ELINOR'S YOGA CLASSES... We have added NEW advanced/intermediate yoga sessions to the on-demand section with Elinor Cohen. Along with the 60-minute sessions, we also uploaded 40-45 minute vinyasa classes for you to flow to any time of the day and more convenient 30-minute yoga classes. To get on-demand, just subscribe to any of our UNLIMITED packages. Leanne McDermott [IG: @leannerays] & Demetra Kentrotas [IG: @d_meetch] have plenty of flows for you as well. SALE...
